Introductory Message
The so-called “New Normal” set-up in our country brings so many changes in
our life. Indeed, we are trying to cope with a lot of these changes brought about by
the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes include our educational system which was
not spared by the harsh effect of the corona virus. But life has to go on despite the
COVID-19 threat in order to live and survive economically. Education has to
continuously grow, too; hence, this alternative delivery mode using the modular
approach.

My dear parents, this is the time that the teacher-parent tandem will be tapped
for the effective use of this learning material. The utilization of this module is one of
the most appropriate and effective tools for distant learning such as this. You or
anyone else in the family is on the call of duty of monitoring your child’s learning at
home amidst this pandemic time. You are needed to motivate your child to engage in
the activities of this module. You should be there to assist him/her at times he/she
finds difficulty coping with the exercises. We anticipate with appreciation your
support and guidance after all, the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC)
that your child must acquire are taken into consideration in conceptualizing this
learning kit.

Hello my dear learner! I am happy to see you again.


From the previous lesson, you have learned about identify
meanings of unfamiliar words through structural analysis: prefixes and
affixes. Now, you are at the next level of learning in this module. As you
go on reading, I assure you that you will learn and enjoy our lesson. So,
sit back, relax, and SMILE.

In this lesson, you will be able to identify different meanings of


content-specific words (denotation and connotation). This lesson is
important for you to have a clear definition of words. It will also help you
to strengthen your journalistic skill in describing the meanings of words.

My beloved learner, you are expected to identify different


meanings of content-specific words (denotation and connotation).
Understanding denotation and connotation will help you to know the
quality or manner of the words you are writing or reading. As you go on
with this module, you will also understand clearly that the words you
write or speak will have a great impact to one’s emotion, either positive

To be able to understand completely our lesson, let us know

serves to protect against tooth decay.
 COVID-19 - an infectious disease caused by a new

Here are the concepts for you to learn. Believe in yourself, and
surely you will hit the mark for perfection. Enjoy learning.
You will notice that the underlined words in the Warm-Up Activity
suggest either an exact meaning or a meaning quite different from the
literal. These are called Denotation and Connotation.

Let me discuss first denotation.

Denotation refers to the literal meaning or dictionary meaning of


a word. The meaning is specific, exact and concrete.

Examples:

On the other hand,

Connotation refers to the ideas and feelings associated with the


word. It goes beyond the literal meaning of the word. It denotes the
personal and cultural meaning of a word. The meaning can be positive
or negative.

meanings of content specific words (denotation and connotation).
Remember that denotation is the literal meaning or dictionary
meaning of the word while connotation refers to the ideas and

negative.
Connotation is either positive or negative. Positive
