SPL Power Systems
The Main Reason for Reactive power
compensation on HT side is to improve the
Voltage profile at Transmission end.
Reactive Power compensation on HT side
provides more Grid Stability during Transient
conditions
Prevention Electrical blackout in the Grid
Prevents Harmonics to enter into the Utility Grid
Reduces the Transmission Line Power Losses
Shunt compensation with capacitor banks
reduces kVA loading of lines, transformers, and
generators, which means with compensation
they can be used for delivering more power
without overloading the equipment.
SPL Power Systems
There are two types of reactive power
compensation on HT Side
Series Capacitor Compensation
Shunt Capacitor Compensation
• In Series Compensation the Capacitors are
connected in Series with Transmission Line. It
Reduces the total Line Reactance and enhance
more active power flow in Line.
• In Shunt Compensation the Capacitor banks are
connected in Parallel to the HT Line. It Enhance
the Voltage stability of Grid during Transients and
also supplies reactive power to the Loads
connected to Line.
SPL Power Systems
Different
types of Shunt Compensation
provided in HT side are
HT Shunt Capacitor Banks
HT Shunt Detuned Harmonic Filter Panels
HT Shunt Tuned Harmonic Filter Panels
HT Automatic Harmonic Power Factor Correction
Panel (Supplied By Third party)
SPL Power Systems
HT Capacitor Panels Range – 3.3 kV up to 33 kV
Each Phase of the Transmission Line is connected
with Separate shunt Capacitor banks
Each phase of the Capacitor bank is connected
with Series Reactor of Detuning factor of (p=0.2%)
to limit the Inrush current of Capacitors
Each shunt Capacitor bank Phase provided with
Feeder protection Relays which provides Feeder
Over-Current, Earth fault Protection and
Capacitor Unbalance Protection.
Shunt Capacitor bank also provided with Bus Over-
voltage Protection and Bus Under-voltage
protection for protection of Capacitor banks
against voltage.
SPL Power Systems
HT Detuned Harmonic Filter Banks Range – 3.3
up to 33 kV.
Each Phase of the Transmission Line is
connected with Separate shunt Reactor-
Capacitor (L-C) banks.
Each Phase of Capacitor bank is connected in
series with Detuned Filter Reactor (p=7%) for
Suppressing Line Harmonics.
Each shunt Detuned Harmonic Filter bank Phase
is provided with Feeder protection Relays which
provides Feeder Over-Current, Earth fault
Protection and Capacitor Unbalance Protection.
Shunt Detuned Harmonic Filter bank also
provided with Bus Over-voltage Protection and
Bus Under-voltage protection for protection of
Harmonic Filter banks against voltage.
SPL Power Systems
HT Tuned Harmonic Filter Banks Range from – 3.3kV up to 33 kV.
Each Phase of the Transmission Line is connected with Separate
shunt Reactor-Capacitor (L-C) banks.
Each Phase of Capacitor bank is connected in series with Tuned
Filter Reactor which is tuned for a particular Harmonic for
Suppressing that particular Harmonics in Line.
HT Tuned Harmonic Filters banks have Separate Harmonic Filter
(L-C) bank for filtering out a particular Harmonics. There will be
Separate Harmonic Filters (L-C) banks for each 3rd Harmonic, 5th
Harmonic, 7th Harmonic, 11th Harmonic, 13th Harmonic etc.
The Number of Tuned Harmonic Filters depends on the System
requirement and Predominant Harmonics present in the Line.
Each Tuned Harmonic Filter bank branch Phase is provided with
Feeder protection Relays which provides Feeder Over-Current
(50/51), Earth fault (51N) Protection and Capacitor Unbalance
(46)Protection and Breaker failure protection (50B).
Shunt Tuned Harmonic Filter bank also provided with Bus Over-
voltage Protection(59) and Bus Under-voltage (27) protection for
protection of Harmonic Filter banks against voltage.
SPL Power Systems
HT Automatic Harmonic Power factor
correction panel Range – 3.3kV up to 11 kV.
Rated kVAR – 450 kVAR to 20 MVAR
It uses Vacuum contactor as switching device
for switching each Harmonic Filter Banks.
It uses Detuned (p=7%) Harmonic Filter for
filtering Line Harmonics.
HT Automatic Harmonic Power Factor
Correction Panel efficiently decreases the
losses at HT bus shunt over compensation.
The panel enhances the stability by injecting
reactive power in line along with network
load requirement in auto mode by using
Automatic Power factor correction Relay.
