Practical Research (Module 6)

This chapter outlines the methodology for a study examining the access to technology and its efficiency for online classes of grade 11 students. It will use a qualitative phenomenological approach, collecting data through interviews of 10 students (5 female, 5 male) using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews will explore what technologies students use for online classes and how effective each is. The responses will then be analyzed using axial coding, narrative analysis and identifying themes to classify the most efficient technologies for online learning. Ethics around confidentiality and informed consent will be followed in conducting this study.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY AND ANALYSIS

Access to technology and its efficiency for online class of grade 11 students in Sumulong

Memorial High School

3.1 Population

To serve the purpose of this research, the researcher is going to gather data using a

quota sampling technique. Researcher will select ten (10), people with a certain class of 5

females and 5 male participants. And it is divided into 10 respondents according to their strand.

The researcher will gather information and conduct interview to the selected participants who

willingly participated on this study.

3.2 Ethical Consideration

Ethical Considerations can be specified as one of the most important parts of the

research (Bryan and Bell, 2007). The researcher has the right to follow in conducting the ethical

study. Furthermore, the researcher may also have a respect for the dignity that should be

prioritized; full consent should be obtained from the participants before the study. Informed

consent must give an explanation and the process, also the possible risk and benefits in this
study. Also, any type of conversation talking about your research should be done with honesty

and transparency. All the details and trust provided by the researcher from the participants

that are carefully observed and that is should be only for academic purposes. The Researcher

will adequate the level of confidentiality of the research data should be ensured. And also the

Respondents should participate based on informed consent. The principle of informed consent

involves researchers providing sufficient information and assurances about taking part to allow

individuals to understand the implications of participation and to reach a fully informed,

considered, and freely given decision about whether or not to do so, without the exercise of

any pressure or coercion.

3.3 Research Design

The research design uses a qualitative research design wherein it is concerned with

establishing answers to the whys and hows of the phenomenon question. (Djs, n. d). The design

of qualitative research is probably the most flexible of the various experimental techniques,

encompassing a variety of accepted methods and structures. (Shuttleworth & Wilson, n. d).

Also, it emphasizes how it is important this study and typically how and what is narrated. The

function of this research is to a deep understanding of the research problem as logically as

possible. The phenomenology approach enables the researcher to determine the

commonalities of individuals' usage and experiences with the use of technology for online

classes of a particular group, which are the grade 11 students. Although the

questions/observations in qualitative research are not managed to gain a particular response

the ability to code findings occurs more often than you may originally think. This is because the
researcher ‘steers’ the research in a particular direction whilst encouraging the respondent to

expand, and go into greater detail on certain points raised (in an interview/ focus group), or

actions carried out (participant observation) (Djs, n. d).

3.4 Conceptual Framework

INPUT
Access to technology of Grade 11 students for their online class

PROCESS
Interview grade 11 students and identify the technology they use for
online classes. Determine the pros and cons of those technology for
online learning.

OUTPUT
Access to Technology and It's Efficiency for Online Classes of Grade 11
Students
3.5 Interview Instrument

Interviews are particularly useful for getting the story behind a participant’s

experiences. The interviewer can pursue in-depth information around the topic. Interviews may

be useful as follow-up to certain respondents to questionnaires, e.g., to further investigate their

responses. (McNamara, 1999). The interview Interviews are primarily done in qualitative

research and occur when researchers ask one or more participants general, open-ended

questions and record their answers. Often audiotapes are utilized to allow for more consistent

transcription (Creswell, 2012). The researcher will prepare a semi-structured interview

questions to be able to identify the technology used by the students and how efficient it is for

their online classes. The interview guide will be composing of more or less 2 open-ended type

of question. The researcher might add new questions that are needed depending on the answer

of the participant in order to clarify his/her answer. The interview will take place according on

the convenience of the participant and it might also last for an hour or half.
3.6 Data Analysis

The researcher will refer to axial coding after the data collection to interconnect the

categories of codes created by the researcher. This will enable the researcher to classify the

degree of efficacy of the technology used by the student for the online learning. The provided

data will be transcribed, organized and used to construct themes. The researcher will also use

textual data as a guide to identify the efficiency a specific technology contributes for online

learning. The researcher will use narrative analysis to describe the experiences of the

participants with the technology they use for online learning. Narrative analysis is a genre of

analytic frames whereby researchers interpret stories that are told within the context of

research and/or are shared in everyday life (Allen, 2017). Upon describing the experiences of

participants with the technology they use for online learning, the researcher will be able to

identify the effectiveness each of the technology used by the students for online class,

therefore will enable the researcher to classify the technology that had the most efficiency for

the online learning of students.

3.7 Summary

The researcher will select ten participants from different academic strands of grade 11

students. In conducting this study, the researcher has the right to follow ethical study

deliberation including the consent and the information of one individual. The researcher is used

the qualitative research design phenomenology approach to conduct this research. It may also

have individual questions that are used as an interview instrument. All information is collected
from the participants and it will be analyzed together with the textual data and interview in

different related information such as news reports, social media and surveys.
