Close games at Blackall bowls

Divot

In A singles last Sunday at the Blackall bowls club, Ross Browning and Col Pfingst had a pretty good battle with 23-19 for Ross after 30 ends. Ross proved a little too strong from then on to win 31-23 on 38 ends. In B singles, Roy Black and Mitchell Pfingst also had a good close game. After leading 2524 on 30 ends, young Mitch went on to win narrowly by 31-26. In another B singles, Greg Macnamara surprised everyone by leading John Bowyer for 32 ends to be 25-23 in front. Greg just failed to hang on, going down 31-27 in a very close game. In the other B singles, Rob Doyle had a real off day, going down to Dave Carter 31-5. The club would like to thank the players who travelled to Longreach on Saturday for the Central West Bowls. Dont forget that Quilpie is visiting Blackall on Saturday and Sunday. Any help from members on those days would be much appreciated. Dally

Rowan Hunnam The pools new lessee Matthew Scanlon admits that it might have been the artesian spa that first attracted him to the position at the Blackall Aquatic centre. Originally from Western Australia, Matthew has spent a lot of his time on the Sunshine Coast and in cities working as a swimming coach. He has moved to Blackall from Moranbah, near Clermont where he was working in a similar position. Matthew brings years of experience and knowledge about swimming to Blackall which he will be putting to good use at the aquatic centre. I want to give the kids the opportunity to be the best that they can be, Matthew said. For the fantastic facilities we have got here, it is under used. Matthew plans to set up swimming programs at the pool, for people with all levels of swimming ability. He also hopes to keep attracting and encouraging tourists and travellers to the unique pools. As well as being a highly qualified swim coach, and working as assistant coach to Grant Hacketts coach, Matthew has worked in a variety of industries including surf lifesaving, security and mining. He has received a service medal and an infantry medal for his time in the army in Somalia and enjoyed playing waterpolo in the Australian All Services team. Matthew is welcomed by the whole community, particularly those that will be keen to make the most of having him here. We are very pleased to have Matthew in this position and we are really looking forward to seeing what he does with the great facilities, Blackall Tambo mayor Jan Ross said.
After 35 years of loyal service to the Blackall fire brigade, Greg Tierney has retired from duty. As captain of the service for the last three years, following a 15year stint as deputy captain, Greg leaves with a lot of experience and memories. As when you leave any job, you are very sad, Greg said. I enjoyed the fire service because you are there to help people. I joined up to help people in need and in trouble. Greg told two Blackall State School students who were also at the interview that he had made lifelong friends from his position in the fire brigade and that team work was the key to a good response to an emergency. Thirty-five years ago the fire

Greg currently enjoys his three days a week at the Blackall State School in the manual arts department, teaching students subjects including mechanics and welding. It is really worthwhile being able to pass on all of my knowledge and experience, he said. After leaving the fire brigade, Greg is looking forward to more time at the gem fields, looking for sapphires and perfecting his rifle shooting. Greg is still an active member of the SES and leaves the fire station in capable hands with Matthew Richardson as acting captain.

A lot has changed since then, including having access to better equipment, the same as is used in cities. We have the same fires as they do in the city, just not as often, Greg said. Prior to having the jaws-of-life tool, Greg had made a mechanism similar to a giant can opener that was used to get through car roofs. Unlike the old days, station duties are now carried out once a week, to check that everything is in working order and clean. While all fire servicemen and

The Blackall Hospital Auxiliary committee held its second attempt at an AGM on April 2. Unlike the first, the meeting was a great success and a new committee was appointed. Veronica Driver was elected president of the association, Sandra Eagle as vice-president, Jessica Groves and Carly Mlikota as secretaries, John Turner as treasurer and Jodie Meehan-Johnson and Carleen Allom as the publicity officers. The next hospital auxiliary meeting is to be held on May 21 at 7pm, in the training room at the Blackall hospital. All interested persons are welcome to attend. The new committee are making some changes to the major event this year, as requested by a large proportion of those people who completed the recent survey. The Springtime festival will be held at 6pm on October 10 in Banks Park in Blackall. The festival theme this year will be Recycle, Reuse and Reduce. It will be a family orientated event with several novelty and food stalls and a garden tea, with table service and entertainment. The current committee is grateful to the preceding committee for all their hard work and dedication over the previous years and held a surprise morning tea this week on May 12. The new president presented Jenny Avery and Glady Hayward with a small gift for all of their years of service as executive members. Jenny had been on the committee for 23 years with 18 of those as treasurer.

Blackall State School students will get to compete in funny Chappy Challenges next week as part of Chappy Week celebrations. There will be a Chappy Chalk Art challenge and a Chappy Chuckle challenge to reveal the best joke teller in the school. Chappy Week is an annual event run by SU Qld to increase awareness, raise funds and celebrate the value of school chaplains. School chaplains provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and kids who just need a friend, said CEO of SU Qld and former rugby league referee, Tim Mander. Blackall State School chaplain Bec Ossipow said chappies were in the prevention and rescue business. Chaplains help students find a better way to deal with issues and get alongside young people who are doing it tough, she said. Bec said her roles included running lunchtime activities and other programs, building positive relationships with students, working with other support staff to care for students, providing ethical guidance and networking with local support services, churches and organisations to create opportunities for young people to be involved in camps, workshops and youth events. SU Qld, an interdenominational Christian organisation which cares for young people around the state, employs and supports approximately 500 chaplains in the state. Bec said it was a privilege to be one of these chaplains in her home-town. I never dreamed I would end up as a chaplain at my old school, chatting to students in the very spots where I remember having tough times as a kid, she said.

Class of 1969 reunion

The Blackall State School class of 1969 held their forty year reunion at the Rydges Resort in Yeppoon over the Easter weekend last month. The group have been celebrating their reunions almost every five years since 1987. Those that were able to celebrate forty years since studying at Blackall State School were Jenny Green, Anne McEnlly, Dot Lawson, Shirley Sutton, Alison Skewes, Maxine Roberts, Kathy Jackson, Gail Sunderland,

Elizabeth Manttan, Jenny Hood, Greg Scanlan, Peter Moore, David Green and Jeff Daly. Everyone who attended had a great time and some were able to bring their partners to enjoy the experience. It was a particularly important time for Jenny Hood. Jenny left Blackall when she was in year seven at school. The reunion this year was the first time since leaving Blackall that all of her old school friends were able to catch up with her.

running out of water on the Barkley Tableland, he returned to the gulf and journeyed south, reaching the head waters of the Thompson River, which he followed to a point south of Longreach. Crossing to the Barcoo, he also described the country on the Barcoo as rich, with undulating features, and as having the best grasses. Indian-born James Allan arrived in the west looking for suitable grazing land, and traversed a section of the Upper Barcoo. He later became the first European settler and the first pastoralist to run livestock on the Barcoo, having taken up a large area of land, which he named Mt Enniskillen. He built a station homestead for his family on the banks of the Barcoo, midway between Mount Northampton and Mount Enniskillen. His descendents have resided in the area to this day. These seven European explorers each led exploration parties through the Barcoo river area between 1846 and 1862. Although the leaders of these parties had the responsibility of directing and making day-to-day decisions for the parties, the other members of the various parties also contributed to, in most cases, the success of the ventures, without that contribution the enterprises could not have been undertaken. In all thirty-six men took part in the seven expeditions, including eight Aborigines.
