Feelings about QATAR World CUP 2022 / Mysteries of World Cup 2022/ The Controversial

QATAR World Cup 2022

The mega-sporting event, the FIFA World Cup, is being held by an Arab nation for the first time
ever which started on November 20. Qatar, also known as constitutional monarch of Qatar is a
home to 2.6 million people. Among these few millions, only 15% of them are actual citizens of
the country and the remaining 85% are the foreign workers. Among those 15% citizens, 99% of
them reside in the urban and developed cities. Looking at the Qatar’s economic outlook, it is
more than promising as it is the country with fourth highest GDP in global arena.

Now, lets bring the light of discussion to the contemporary hot topic these days. Qatar was
selected to host the 2022 World Cup, in 2010. Soon after its selection, a lot of was asked and
about Qatar being a host country and potential kickbacks surfaced instantly. A study launched in
2014 in order to determine whether the decision of FIFA to select Qatar was a fair one or it was
engulfed with the perks offered by Qatar also known as bribes.

Sepp Blatter, the then president of FIFA was blamed for overseeing the bidding for the 2022
world cup. Because of his association with the unfair bidding for Qatar, he was banned from the
world greatest sports, football, for life. His words reflect the resentment and says that choosing
Qatar as a host was a mishap. Then who chose Qatar and who is to be blamed for? Blatter
answered it was a result of secret political pressure exerted upon the FIFA and what kind of
pressure is no less than a mystery which is yet to be solved.

There are several facets to the Qatar hosting football. To be specific, Qatar has never been a
football playing nation per se and thus having such a infrastructures to host the sports extremely
huge is not even a topic of discussion. To date, sports avid mainly football avid countries have
hosted the World Cup and have invested a huge amount to make the event even bigger. Qatar
has spent more than 300 billion dollars already in the infrastructure development for the FIFA
World Cup along with constructions of hotels and other required infrastructures. Looking at
history, South Africa spent around 3.5 billion dollars to gear itself up for FIFA World Cup 2010.
The expenses made by south Africa is nowhere around to be compared. The massive expenses
made by Qatar has aroused numerous questions in mind. Why actually it wants to host the
game, what is the necessity and is there anything bigger than the World Cup that Qatar is trying
to gain?
Since many things and speculations has already surfaced, however there are two things
that Qatar is looking for as an outcome of a successful world cup hostess. It is about profit and
the next is TRP. When it comes to profit, the revenue generated from world cup is really
rewarding given the investment. The 2018 host, Russia earned more than 5.36 billion dollars in
revenues and 3.5 billion in profit. The revenue coming into the host country through spendings
at hotels, restaurants and sports tourism is undeniable but this isn't all that's tempting for Qatar.
But the country has already spent way more than this sum. Qatar has built seven new stadiums,
a new Metro System linking the East area, a hundred new hotels, a new airport, Hospitality
centers, shopping centers and many other facilities. So, it is not just profiting that Qatar is
betting on but the PR you get from the event. If you did not happen to know, World Cup is the
world's most watched sporting event. 3.6 billion people watched the 2010 World Cup in Russia.
The critics say that Qatar is trying to use this magnificent number of viewership and the PR to
sport wash. Qatar is trying to use FIFA to improve its reputation in the world. When Sports is
used as a propaganda, it is called sports washing. To consider a few examples: China has
been accused of sports washing by hosting the Beijing Winter Olympics. Coming back to the
original question which is why does Qatar need FIFA World Cup 2022. Well, the country’s
motive is to modernize the country’s image and make it a prime destination for business and
bring it at par with the likes of the Bible.
But ever since the announcement of the 2022 World Cup venue Qatar has been swamped in
controversies. Allegations about labor abuse, illegality of same-sex relations, criminalization of
homosexuality, and prohibitions of alcohols in stadium are few hot controversies.

So, what should you feel about Qatar 2022? For years now athletes have made political
statements during games and matches. American NBA Players went on their knees to protest
the racial injustice following the date of George Floyd. Moral accountability does not end with
sports. Because it definitely does not and players know this and to protest against the Qatar’s
unhumanitarian approaches, Captains of England, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany have
already planned to wear rainbow armbands in Qatar in support of inclusivity. Then what should
ethe Fans do? Should they support the World Cup 2022, reject it, or have no opinion at all?
Well, world cup once in four years. It is prayed, enjoyed and taken to the individual’s heart and
praised. At the same time, players keep themselves always edge of everything to prepare, play
for their country and bring the winner title to their country. So, it will not be a justice for the effort
put in to have it taken off the TV. But the Qatar’s brutality with the migrant workers, prioritizing
the sport over their life, keeping their lives at stake to make the big name is something that
nobody can stand and forgive on any grounds. But saying no to such big sports is not a good
spirit. Thus, the mature thing to do is separate our feelings about Qatar from our passion for
football. But, the injustice should never be forgotten nor forgiven. That's all there is to it; in our
opinion, your attitude toward the Qatar World Cup 2022 should be determined solely by you.
