Safety comes first in any repair or maintenance job. If you are not completely sure of how to make a repair
or adjustment, consult your instruction manual, manager, local distributor, or our factory Customer Service
Department at (773) 235-4430. Only trained and experienced persons should perform maintenance or repair
work. Below you will find a few brief rules to remember for each task listed. Long hair, jewelry, long sleeves, etc.
should be tucked in or not worn during operation or repair. If you ignore a rule, you are taking the risk of possible
injury to yourself, other workers, or damage to the machine. Professional help is only a telephone call away. Use
common sense when performing maintenance or repairs. Machine should be shut down and cool, with power
disconnected at the external disconnect switch when working on it. Never try to clean any roll or area of the
machine unless power is disconnected and the machine is cool. Certain jobs may require briefly running ironer
at slowest speed but only when specifically directed by instructions. At these times, an extra person must always
be standing ready to quickly shut off power if needed. Avoid getting close to moving rolls - stay away from nip
points where two or more rolls come together

REPLACING COMPRESSION ROLL PADS AND COVERS

AT LEAST TWO TRAINED PEOPLE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF IRONER CONTROLS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL
TIMES TO REPLACE COMPRESSION ROLL PADS AND COVERS. NEVER ATTEMPT THIS JOB UNLESS
THE SPEED CONTROL, COMPRESSION ROLL CONTROL, AND START/STOP FUNCTIONS ARE WORKING
PROPERLY AND THE SPEED IS REDUCED TO ITS ABSOLUTE MINIMUM BEFORE THE UNIT IS SHUT DOWN
AND PREPARED FOR COVER REPLACEMENT. WHEN POWER IS TURNED ON TO ALLOW THE COVER TO
WIND ONTO THE ROLL, IT MUST BE ALLOWED TO RUN AT ITS VERY SLOWEST SPEED. IF YOU ARE NOT
KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EXPERIENCED WITH THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT, GET PROFESSIONAL HELP.

Before starting this job, make sure that all START/STOP functions and the mechanism used to raise and lower
the compression roll(s) are working properly. You must reduce the speed of the ironer to its very slowest setting
before shutting the ironer down in preparation for this procedure. If you cannot lower the speed to its slowest
setting by using the variable speed handle, knob, or control, do not try to replace pads and covers until the speed
control is repaired and speed can be reduced. Trying to do this job with a broken speed controller is foolish and
unsafe. This job should not be performed by operators or untrained personnel. It requires knowledge and ability
beyond that normally possessed by operators or untrained staff.

The ironer must be shut down, cool, and power disconnected before starting. With power disconnected, the old
cover and cement can be removed, the new pad and cover put in position and cement applied to the roll. You must
then carefully and slowly allow the ironer to run in order to pack the padding down. For safety, one person should
have his hand on the START/STOP switch, button, or disconnect at all times while performing this function. The
second person can be carefully slightly pulling back on the trailing edge of the cover until it is wound onto the com-
pression roll in order to make sure that there is a firm and solid fit. Be particularly careful of other moving rolls while
you are doing this job - especially the large ironing roll and (if applicable) other compression or idler rolls. Power
should again be disconnected before tie tapes are installed and secured to hold compression roll cover in place.

 RETURN RIBBON REPLACEMENT OR ADJUSTMENT

Replacing or adjusting the 6” wide brown ironing return ribbons is also a job which must only be performed with the
ironer cool and power disconnected. The exact method of replacing ribbons depends on the specific model. With
power disconnected and the ironer cool, you must first remove tension from the return ribbon guide roll by using wood-
en blocks to support it. Observe the path of the adjacent return ribbons and determine the best way to insert the new
ribbon into the appropriate place and path. Never do this while the machine is running and rolls are moving. While
running, the job is difficult and dangerous to perform. With power disconnected, take your time to insert and hand
feed the ribbon around the various rolls and into position before you use the supplied lacing pin to fasten the clipper
lacings together. After you have completed your installation of one or more ribbons, remove the blocks holding the
guide roll out of tension, reconnect power and start the machine to determine if everything is running smoothly. If there
is a problem, again disconnect power before attempting adjustment. Do not forget to reattach any red wire safety
guards which you may have had to remove before installing the new return ribbon(s).

RETURN RIBBON DRIVE ROLL COVER

To drive ironing return ribbons at the proper speed for smooth linen movement and a high quality finish, the rough
covering on the return ribbon drive roll must have enough “grip” to properly drive the ribbons. If the return ribbon
drive roll does not have “grip”, the friction material covering this steel roll must be replaced. Complete instructions
are available from the factory on this task which should be performed by trained personnel with the ironer shut
down, cool, and power disconnected as directed.

FEED RIBBON REPLACEMENT

Canvas feed ribbons must be replaced only when the machine is cool, shut down, and power has been
disconnected at the external switch. Follow directions in your instruction manual to remove tension from ribbons
and replace them one by one. Information on making sure that pressure on the feed ribbons is even to ensure
long service life and prevent jams can be obtained from your local distributor or Chicago Dryer. Feed ribbons are
pre-shrunk canvas and should not be wet before using. Use only bamboo pins or approved metal equal to hold
clipper lacings together. Tension on feed ribbons should be just enough to keep them moving and to carry linen into
and through the ironer or folder. Excessive tightening will lead to premature ribbon deterioration and breakage.

TROUBLESHOOTING AND SAFETY

Only trained personnel who have experience with (as applicable) gas, electrical, or steam components should
repair or adjust these areas of the ironer or folder. Never bypass safety devices; they are there for everyone’s
protection. If, for example, a gas heated ironer is shutting down for unknown reasons, find the cause and cure the
problem (i.e. inconsistent gas pressure, voltage, spark, or clogged burner tips) before placing the ironer back in
service. Do not, for example, try to lengthen the time delay relay (can cause excessive gas accumulation inside
heated roll) or bypass any other safety device in order to “force” the ironer to work under improper conditions. This
could cause damage to persons or property because of delayed ignition, lack of oxygen, electrical shock or fire
hazard. With help, if needed, find the cause and correct the problem. Do not take dangerous shortcuts.

Operator Safety Reminders for Chicago® Flatwork Ironer
POST AND READ

1. NEVER TRY TO REMOVE OR ADJUST JAMMED LINEN OR MATERIAL

WHILE THE MACHINE IS RUNNING. Attempting to reposition or un-jam linen or service
the ironer while it is running can result in serious injury to the operator or damage to the ironer.
If something is jammed, SHUT THE IRONER OFF at the power source before trying to remove
it. If your ironer has compression roll levers, learn how these levers work and always use them
to fully raise padded rolls before shutting off power, allowing ironer to cool, and attempting to
remove jammed linen or service the ironer. ALWAYS AVOID CONTACT WITH HEATED PARTS.

2. NEVER reach over, under, or behind safety finger guard or into any area near heated roll or
moving parts without first shutting off ironer at power source. If you break this rule, you are taking
the chance of getting caught in the rolls or ribbons and possibly incurring serious injury from the
ironer’s heat or pressure. This rule should be followed whether you are working at the front, side,
or rear of the ironer.

3. CHECK operation of safety finger guard at the beginning of every shift. Touching the safety
guard should activate a switch which will stop the ironer. If this safety feature is not working prop-
erly, shut off the ironer at the power source and notify your manager. Do not attempt to operate
the ironer until the safety finger guard is repaired and working properly. Always make sure that
ALL other safety guards and end panels are in place before operating the ironer.

4. ALWAYS make sure that all ribbons and tapes are in place and working properly. They are
designed to hold linen so it is properly ironed and to prevent jamming. NEVER REPLACE OR
ADJUST TAPES, RIBBONS, OR PADDING WHILE IRONER IS RUNNING. Keeping your ironer
well-waxed also helps to prevent jams

5. DO NOT iron anything except flatwork because damage to the ironer or injury can result. Your
ironer is designed for processing flatwork only.

6. DO NOT stand, sit, or kneel on any shelf at the front or rear of the ironer. These are not de-
signed to support a person’s weight.

7. USE the “Buddy System” when servicing the ironer to make sure no one else accidentally turns
the ironer on while you are working on it. When servicing, power to the ironer should be shut off
at the wall switch, fuse box, or power source. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN HEATED ROLL
WHILE IRONER IS RUNNING OR HOT. Serious injury can result. Never try to service an ironer
while it is running.

8. PROTECT yourself and your fellow workers by making sure that everyone follows these simple
rules. Read and follow all safety labels. Learn which parts are hot and how your ironer works
- including how to shut it off in an emergency. Do not get close to heated or moving parts or wear
loose clothing or jewelry when near the ironer. If you see someone breaking these rules, help
him/her prevent serious injury to themselves or others, by seeing that he or she follows the rules
and shuts the ironer off first. You can help prevent accidents by explaining these rules to employ-
ees who do not read English.

9. IF IN DOUBT, ask your supervisor or contact our Service Department for instructions. They
will be glad to show you how to safely and efficiently operate or service the ironer. Only qualified
personnel should service the ironer.

desconecte el calor y la electricidad y notifque al gerente. No intente operar la planchadora hasta que la barra
de seguridad esté reparada y operando apropiadamente. Asegúrese de que todas las guards de seguridad y
los paneles de los extremos estén en su lugar, antes de proceder con la operación de la planchadora.

4. Siempre asegúrese que todas las cintas y listones y protectores de seguridad estén funcianando apropia-
damente. Estos están diseñdos para agarrar la ropa proveyendo un planchado de alta calidad y evitar que se

8. Protéjase usted y a sus compañeros asegurándose de que todos sigan éstas simples reglas. Lea y ob-
serve los rótulos de seguridad. Aprenda cuales partes son las calientes y como funciona su planchadora,
incluyendo como apagarla en tiempo de emergencia. Nunca se acerque a partes calientes o en movi-

 Operator Safety Reminders for Chicago® Folders
POST AND READ
Read and Learn The instruction manual MUST be carefully read by the person in charge of laundry
operations BEFORE installing or operating the Folder.
Training Operators MUST be trained and instructed so that the Folder is operated properly and all
safety regulations are followed.
Safe Operation The Folder MUST never be left unattended while it is running. Always shut down the
machine when it is not in use.
Emergency All laundry personnel MUST be instructed on how to use stop buttons. Personnel should also
Shut-Down be familiar with the location and method of stopping the Folder by using the disconnect switch.
Safety Labels Laundry personnel MUST be familiar with all safety labels and their meaning. Insure that
labels are read, understood, and followed at all times. Explain all safety precautions to
employees who CAN NOT read English.
Receiving Shelves Do not stand, sit or kneel on any receiving shelves or conveyors. They are not designed to
and Conveyors hold the weight of a person.
Utility The Folder MUST be properly grounded and operated on the correct voltage as shown
Connections on the Folder nameplate. Warranty will be voided and damage to motors may occur if the
Folder is operated at a different voltage than stated on the nameplate.
Safety Features Safety guards and end panels MUST be installed at all times. If it is necessary to remove a guard
or end panel for service work, use extreme care to avoid injury, and replace the guard or panel as
soon as possible. NEVER operate the folder unless all safety guards and end panels are in place.
Safe Repair The “buddy system” SHOULD be used when doing any repair or maintenance work.
Follow local OSHA regulations for proper lock out - tag out requirements. One person
should perform the work while the other monitors machine functions for safety.
Servicing the When performing service or maintenance on the Folder, always STOP THE FOLDER
Folder AND DISCONNECT POWER to the machine.
Clearing a Jam NEVER reach into any part of the Folder while it is running. If necessary, QUALIFIED
PERSONNEL should remove jammed flatwork with the FOLDER OFF AND POWER
DISCONNECTED TO THE MACHINE. Use the Jog Reverse button BRIEFLY to
clear a jam if necessary.
Static Bar DO NOT touch the static bar. The static bar MUST be turned off while servicing
folders that are equipped with a static bar. When waxing an ironer, discharge the wax
cloth to the front of the ironer if possible, or insure that the static bar of the folder is
turned OFF before sending a wax cloth through the system.
Alteration The Folder MAY NOT be altered in any manner without written permission from Chicago
Dryer Company.
Cleanliness The Folder MUST be kept clean and free of lint and debris.
Labels and DO NOT remove safety labels, nameplates, or any markings originally provided with the
Nameplates Folder. If any item is damaged, contact Chicago Dryer Company for free replacements.
