Understanding the Self: The Political Self
Internet trolls have been disrupting the Filipino community, especially in social
media. The Philippines is one of the top active social media users, and the rise of social
media can potentially have more disadvantages for the users rather than giving more
advantages. Internet trolls create controversial and offensive comments or statements
that intentionally upset, flame, and enrage people on social media causing them to have
strong emotional responses. These concerns are needed to be addressed quickly to
resolve the issue, and registering social media accounts to the government would be for
the better since internet trolls, fake promotions, and illegal activities provide adverse
effects on a person. For instance, their mental health can be ruined, can spread
disinformation that could be harmful, and lastly, it can destroy relationships with your
family, friends, and loved ones.
Registration of social media accounts will be beneficial for people’s overall
safety. Firstly, internet trolls can ruin a person’s mental health, since people are very
active on social media and they can see new and different posts that are offensive to
them, this makes a person’s emotions build up and then provokes them to argue with
the troll’s ironic statements up to the point where the conversation is steered off-topic to
simply infuriate, humiliate, and hurt a person. This is another form of cyberbullying or
harassment that might cause anxiety, stress, and even depression (Kloppers, 2021).
Secondly, scams and disinformation can frequently be seen anywhere on social media
because we can share or post anything we want today. Fake news can be damaging,
malicious, and dangerous, as it can distort our historical beliefs, values, and attitudes.
Moreover, it can instill panic, and fear in the people who are shared with fake news,
another probable harm can scam a person to steal personal and private information.
Lastly, illegal activities can destroy relationships with your loved ones, illegal activities
are the riskiest and the worst thing to do and in doing so a person will be identified as a
bad influence on everyone especially your relatives, and in the worst-case scenario,
your loved ones might abandon you for doing illegal activities.
The dangers of social media have been very alarming for people to be aware of.
As the number of social media users is rapidly rising, and looking at the adverse effects
of social media on a person, the safety and security of the platforms are questionable
and we should be aware of our actions and be responsible users. For us to be safe and
sound when using social media, I believe it is time for us to seek assistance to register
and link our accounts to the government for everyone’s complete safety.
