What is a Persuasive Essay?
Persuasive according to Longman Dictionary means good at
influencing other people to believe or do what you want. The term
“persuasive” is an adjective derived from verb “persuade,” which means “to
convince somebody,” while the word essay means a short piece of writing
about a particular subject.
A persuasive essay, is also known as an argumentative essay,
wherein the writer uses valid reasons to show his/her point of view. It is full
of all the convincing techniques a writer can employ. It presents a situation,
and takes a stand – either in its favor, or against it – to prove to readers
whether it is beneficial or harmful for them.
The article you will read is an example of a persuasive essay. For you to
be guided on how to put your ideas and opinions into writing and on how to
persuade others, read the persuasive essay entitled Internet: Is it Good or
Bad?

What is your stand? Do you believe that the internet is good or bad? What
is your opinion about it? This is an example of a persuasive essay.

Internet: Is it Good or Bad?
by Almera Nympha Uy, LES Express Feb. 2020 (excerpt)

(1)Internet is an electronic communication, which links computer

networks and organizational computer facilities around the world. It can
help students in many ways such as in doing projects, research and even
in assignments. People do their work in computers to make life easier and
a little bit better. But is Internet good or bad?

(2) Internet is by far helpful to us thus; its advantages help

many people to look for information and other data for additional
knowledge. It allows students to perform good research and
communicate in other fields of endeavor. This helps students to
understand the topic better by experiencing different forms of
learning like an e-classroom. It is used to connect people who are far
away from each other using social media.

(3) However, internet usage also has its own downside.

Students who spend large amount of time addicted to computer risk
developing mental health problems such as loneliness, depression,
anxiety, poor socialization skills and malnourishment that may even
lead to death. Addiction means a compulsive behavior that interferes
with normal living, which causes problems with family, friends,
relatives and co-workers.

(4) Yet again, the internet can also divert students’ focus from
studying to playing online games. These games can be addictive to
children, young people and even adults. This can rob away precious
time which otherwise should have been used for something more
productive.

(5) This brings back the question: Is the use of internet good
or bad? Well it is neither good nor bad. However, people make the
technology good or bad because it depends on how they use it.
Therefore, whenever you use the internet you must remember to
consider other people and yourself. Be careful and think twice before
you do anything using the internet. Internet usage is good and
beneficial, but we should utilize it in a moderate way. It may change
9
our lives positively but may also bring chaos if not used intelligently.
A persuasive essay, similar to what you have read, expresses an opinion
or tries to convince the reader that the given opinion is correct. In writing a
persuasive essay, strong reason/s and evidence/s should be presented in
order for the essay to be convincing or persuasive.
A good persuasive essay contains the best or the most convincing ideas.
For you to come up with one, you need to make use of the persuasive essay
organizer.

Activity 3. Arrange Me:
DIRECTIONS: Arrange the scrambled paragraphs to form a comprehensive
persuasive essay entitled “Should Students Use Proper Cursive Writing?
Number them 1-5. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Should Students Use Proper Cursive Writing?

Source: English This Way 6, Elisa M. Robles, 4th Ed.

Moreover, cursive writing is important when students need to

sign important documents. Notice that in documents such as an
application form or a check, one’s signature in cursive is always
seen above his or her printed name. This means that cursive writing
is a necessary life skill, an authentic signature is still the most
acceptable when signing important documents.

14
Finally, it is but proper to say that, even in this day and age,
cursive writing is still important, not only to children or students,
but adults as well. It cannot just be taken out of our system as it
still serves beneficial purposes, even in this digital age. Yes,
computers may not be as time-consuming as writing manually, but
there are still a lot more that computers cannot do that our hands
can. Another thing is that computers are rampant and cannot give
an institution its uniqueness and identity. Cursive writing can.

Cursive writing is still relevant in a 21st century classroom. In

this day and age where technology is at its peak, should paper and
pen be left behind? A person’s handwriting, as they say, is a
reflection of his or her personality. A person with good handwriting
manifests patience and shows how much effort he puts in his or her
work and life. Thus, good handwriting develops not just patience,
but also develops focus and motivation.

Secondly, cursive writing enhances children’s reading and

spelling skills. When children learn to write or form letters or
words, they can also learn their sounds and how the words are
pronounced. With their reading and spelling skills, children, more
often than not, are likely to excel in reading and spelling and other
areas of learning as well.

First of all, cursive writing improves the fine motor skills and
enhances the retention skills of students. As it involves the use of
hand muscles, students are able to exercise their fingers and
develop fine motor control, which means that they have to pay
attention to and think about what they are doing.

15
DIRECTIONS: Identify the parts of a persuasive essay asked in the given
questions. Answer it by writing the sentence numbers 1-5. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper.

(1) Cursive writing is still relevant in a 21st century classroom. (2)

In this day and age where technology is at its peak, should paper and pen
be left behind? (3) A person’s handwriting, as they say, is a reflection of
his or her personality. (4) A person with good handwriting manifests
patience and shows how much effort he puts in his or her work and life.
(5) Thus, good handwriting helps a person to not only develop a good
personality, but also to keep focused and motivated.
English This Way – Fourth Edtion – p. 209

6. Evidences are important to persuade or convince the readers about the

writers’ opinion. Which sentence provides the evidence?
7. Which sentence gives the supporting reason or statement?
8. Which sentence is considered a supporting or clarifying question?
9. The ending statement is considered a concluding sentence found at the
end of the paragraph. Which sentence is it?
10. The topic sentence tells the main idea. Which one is the main idea or
topic sentence?

Let Us Enhance
This time you will read another example of a persuasive essay
entitled “Save Mother Earth, Stop Air Pollution!” Be ready to answer the
questions that follow.

Air pollution has crept into every aspect of our lives and has
grown at an alarming rate. Who is to be held responsible for the dirty
air that we breathe? We don’t have to look far to find the culprits. At
home, the garbage we improperly dispose emits a foul smell and
contributes a fair share of pollutants. On our streets, thousands of
smoke-belching vehicles continuously discharge a long percentage of
air pollutants. Around urban areas and in the countryside, factories,
power plants and manufacturing plants emit large amount of dark
smoke containing elements that poison the air.
Unless we are vigilant about our environment, we will soon find
ourselves suffocating for lack of clean, fresh air. What can we do as
individuals to protect ourselves? One way is to put our garbage in a
covered trash receptacle. Another is to minimize our waste through
the practice of the 3R’s namely reuse, reduce and recycle. Still,
another is to plant trees for sure supply of oxygen. Trees take in
carbon dioxide that poison us. They give off oxygen that we need for
breathing.
With all these efforts, we can save ourselves and our
environment as well. So let’s do it now! Stop Air Pollution!
