1.
A discussion and demonstration pertinent to the instruments had been conducted by the
instructor, or the technician assigned to the agromet station.
2. The students were then able to obtain at least three days' worth of readings from each of the
instruments mentioned during observation periods of the day, for which the instructor provided a
schedule for the students.
3.The student then recorded the current (dry bulb), minimum, and maximum air temperatures
from the standard, minimum, and maximum thermometers that were located 2 meters above the
ground surface in the instrument shelter.
4.The following step was to obtain the atmospheric pressure (barometric) by reading from the
barograph and digital barometer.
5. After that, students were able to enter the observed data into the table format shown on the
next page. They were also able to determine the amount of cloud cover for the day at the time of
observation and must have indicated the location of the station and an elevation greater than the
mean sea level pressure.
6. Lastly, students were able to scan the agromet stations recorded to obtain the dates and values
of the lowest and highest recorded air temperature and barometric pressure readings for the
previous year.
Maximum and Minimum Thermometer
Working Principle: It is an instrument which shows the maximum and minimum temperature of
air of the day. It consists of two horizontally placed thermometers. One is maximum
thermometer, place in above and another is minimum thermometer placed in below. The
maximum thermometer is a mercury thermometer with a constriction in the bore near the bulb.
The constriction allows the expanding mercury to pass as the temperature rises, but when cooling
occurs the column of mercury breaks at the construction leaving a part in the bore to register the
highest has a larger bore and its fluid is colorless alcohol. A tiny dark index in the shape of a
long dumbell is placed in the bore below the top of alcohol column. As the alcohol contracts
with the decreasing temperature the meniscus (concave surface) of the alcohol pulls the index
down. When the meniscus moves up the bore, however, it leaves the index behind to register
lowest temperature.
Function: It is used to measure the maximum and minimum temperature of air a day.
Requirements for the installation:
The Maximum-Minimum Thermometers must place in a white, wooden box called a
Stevenson Screen.
