Activity no. 3
ASSESSMENTS
Tasks:
1. Give your own observation on the idea that the Philippines is a disaster-prone country. Do you agree
with this or not?
- Partly, I agreed. Because there are so many disasters that Philippines we’ve been through. At
Least 60% of the country’s total land area, nearly 300,000 square kilometers (116,000 square
miles), is vulnerable to natural hazards, in large part due to the archipelago’s location along both
the path of the tropical storms brewing in the western pacific and the Ring of fire.
2. Explain the difference between a hazard and a disaster. Give specific examples.
- A hazard is any phenomena that has the potential to cause destruction to life and
property. A hazard become a disaster when the potential to cause destruction is
fulfilled. When there is harm to life and property of humans, the hazard is termed a
disaster.
Ex: The typhoon Odette which has a torrential rains and violent winds that brings flood
in some places in Visayas and Mindanao islands, left thousands of families homeless and
this typhoon become a big disaster.
3. What makes a society vulnerable from disasters and hazards?
- because of its geography, climate, and human-induced calamities. Some factors that make
people more vulnerable to disaster include poverty, limited access to medical services, and
corruption.
4. Among the four priority areas of the DRRM, what should be given the most attention and why?
- For me it’s the OBJECTIVES. When you set the objectives, everything will follow until the
activities and outputs.
5. Among all the disasters presented, what do you think is the most difficult to prevent? Expound on
your answer.
- For me it the FLOODS. There are some preventions in typhoons, Volcanic eruptions, storms,
earthquakes but not in Floods. Because Floods is hard to predict while some disaster can be
predicted by the machine that the weather forecast will announce. Controlling the floods is the
hard one for everybody.
