DEFINITION OF MULTIMEDIA

A system of relaying information or entertainment that includes many different forms of

communication. The Web and other computer-based programs and documents are typically
understood to be multimedia, however, there is no clear definition of what "multimedia" is.
Multiple sorts of gadgets can read multimedia documents, including devices, such as laptops,
smartphones, and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

There are basic kinds of Multimedia, and these are: the commonly used for technical
communication.

1. Photographs – It is an image that is media type displayed as visual information. (Taken by

camera or cell phone)
2. Video – is the recording, reproducing, or broadcasting of moving visual images.
3. Audio – it defined as anything related to sound in terms of receiving, transmitting, or
reproducing or its specific frequency.
4. Animation – the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions to create an
illusion of movement as a sequence.
5. Storyboards – a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue,
representing the shots planned for a movie or television production.
6. Podcasts – podcast is a series of audio or video episodes that can be downloaded.

The Advantages of Using Multimedia in Web Design

Multimedia elements, such as sound files, images, animations, and video, can be combined to
improve a website. To maximize their benefits, make sure that a range of website users may access
these things.

Embedded Video Footage

Embedding lets you place a video directly into your website for users to view
without having to leave to play it on another page.

Animated Information
This content can illustrate how things work or present information in entertaining ways. We
should Think about including a different animation a file format that a visitor can access if your Flash
animation doesn't load in their browser.

Sound
Sound is perhaps the most sensuous element of multimedia. It is meaningful "Speech" in any
language from a whisper to a scream. It can provide the listening pleasure of music, the startling
accent of special effects, or the ambience of a mood-setting background.
THERE ARE GUIDELINES FOR USING MULTIMEDIA:

▪ Decide what mix of sound, moving images, still images, text in a project

▪ Determine the types of devices where your project will be viewed, such as computers and cell
phones.

▪ Start simple and do not overwhelm your audience with too many moving elements.
▪ Conduct usability testing on your document to make sure people actually need and use the
multimedia elements.

Photographs
Photographs are designed specifically for display; it is what appears on a camera frame.
Photographs can be use in many ways for a purpose. (Provide evidence, present an accurate picture,
etc.)

Printed and Digital Photograph Formats

Photographs are available in many print and digital formats that can serve various purposes. Such
as: Prints, Slides, Posters, Image Files, Photo, CDs and DVDs.

Image Resolution
An image on a screen is made up of dots called pixels. A pixel is the smallest part of the screen that
can be controlled by the computer or other device. The total number of pixels on a screen is called
its resolution.

Photograph File Formats and Quality

There are different types of formats and quality in our gadgets. TIFF is the best way to get a
high-quality print result while JPEG format is easy to share on the web, email, or social media. PSD
file formats are good for editing in multiple layers. After RAW and TIFF formats, PNG format is the
best for editing.

Scanned Images
It means electronic copy of any document generated using a scanner is called scanned copy.
When you scan an image, you reproduce it in an electronic, digital form.
When scanning an image, you should first decide the following:
• What type of digital file you need (JPEG, TIFF). Choose the format based on the final project output
and also the easiest for your software to access.
• Whether you need colored or black-and-white image, which can have one-third the file size of
color.
• If you want portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation for the image.
• What resolution quality you need. Use the lowest resolution for the project at hand without
compromising the image quality.
• What dpi setting should be (lowest for onscreen, higher print, highest for photos).

Editing Digital Photographs

Photo editing (also called post-processing or postproduction) is the process in digital photography
of making adjustments to photographs in a photo editing program. In short, editing removes errors,
improves your work flow, and enhances your language and style.
