Consequences of violence against women

The consequences of violence against women are numerous. In general, victims are affected by
cases of anxiety, depression and panic syndrome, and can even lead to suicide. The physical
sequelae resulting from aggression are the most varied, ranging from minor bodily injuries to
permanent physical damage, such as burns, fractures and paraplegia. It all depends on the
intensity of the aggression and the time the victim was subjected to the aggression. In some
cases, the aggressor even murders his victim if no punitive measures are taken against him.

As social consequences, we have the overburden of the health system, which treats victims for
their physical and emotional sequelae, the overload of the ostensible police forces, which have to
act to contain the aggressors, and the judicial systems, which have to carry out the proceedings.
of aggression when cases of violence are reported.

We also perceive a huge social backwardness resulting from machismo and patriarchal culture,
which makes it difficult for women to rise in their careers, which means less money circulating
and less talent operating in the technical, scientific, operational, educational, commercial sectors,
etc. When we talk about violence against women, we only think about physical aggression.
However, the types of violence practiced against women are not limited to aggression that results
in bodily harm. The Maria da Penha Law, a legal provision that favors the punishment of
aggressors in cases of domestic violence, discriminates five types of violence that can be
practiced against women. Are they:

 Physical violence: it is physical aggression, the attempt against physical integrity, which
may or may not result in bodily harm.

 Psychological violence: Actions that cause psychological damage to the woman, such as
threats, blackmail, humiliation, persecution, control, etc.

 Sexual violence: it is a sensitive topic. Our society sees sexual violence only as rape by a
sex maniac. However, it is broader, and the rapist or sex offender can be any man who:
forces and coerces women into participating in or witnessing sexual intercourse; engage
in sexual harassment; prevent the woman from using contraceptives; remove the
condom during the sexual act without the woman realizing it; induce a woman to have an
abortion without her will; expose and disseminate intimate images of the woman; and
exploit women sexually through prostitution.

 Moral violence: when the image of the woman is attacked, for her condition as a woman,
through slander and defamation, Patrimonial violence: when the woman has her assets
restricted, subtracted or controlled by the man, removing her financial freedom.
