Narrative Text 95
The peak of Lawu Mountain or Gunung Lawu considered as the sacred place for the people of Magetan
and around of it. There was Raden Bondan Gugur, the fifth son of King Brawijaya VII who named
Damanvulan. Damanvulan convinces by the people as still ruled the Lawu's peak.
Bondan Gugur is the brother of Raden Patah. Raden Patah is the king of Demak Bintoro. He called as
Raden Jimbuningrat.
Once upon a time, there was a terrifying war. The war between the Majapahit Kingdom and Adipati
Bojonegoro (Cepu). Adipati Bojonegoro supported from Raden Patah succeeded defeated Majapahit.
Bondan Gugur ran away from the palace. In that time, he was still young, just about fifteen years old.
Bondan Gugur was tired and confused pursued from Adipati Bojonegoro's soldiers in Sragen. Then he
decided to climb the Lawu mountain.
He just ran without caring himself. Then he arrived in Banyu Urip. The Banyu Urip is the slope of the
Lawu Mountain. In this location, he felt tired and laid down his self under the tree.
There was a holy hermit named Bagawan Jamba Loka. This sacred place located in Penggik, in the east of
Lawu's slope.
When Bondan Gugur walked in the forest, he found a young man in an unconscious condition. He helped
that young man and took some water for him. The young man began to get up from the fainted and told
that his name is Raden Bondan Gugur. That is why this country called Banyu Urip. The meaning of
Banyu Urip is "Life Water."
Bondan Gugur began to tell everything, why he got lost in Lawu Mountain. Bagawan Jamba Loka listens
to him carefully. Bagawan Jamba Loka fells so sympathetically. Bagawan Jamba Loka had a prophecy
from God that, Majapahit would collapse soon. But it will revive in the quiet and remote world that is at
the peak of Lawu.
In the peak of Lawu, Bagawan Jamba Loka teaches Bondan Gugur. Bondan Gugur learnt all knowledge
what his master had given seriously. Bagawan Jamba Loka explained Bondan Gugur about science or
morality.
Bagawan said something after he has complete his lecture to Bondan Gugur. He said "Bondan, which
have been destiny that I would be no longer with you. I have taught you all that I have. It's time for me to
unity with you, merge into your soul. Would you mind? So, you have to listen what I am going to
command to you.
Bondan Gugur answered, “Yes master. If you leave me, who will give me advice?"
"Don't worry, because I'm going to merge into your soul. You are still going to be here and titled as
Hyang Sunan Lawu. Some days, you will respect and love for your people. You should respond and serve
every people hopes seriously." The message of Bagawan to Bondan Gugur.
"So, where I have to live? Who is my friend? And, when I'll be a king who will be the queen?” asked
Bondan confusedly.
"Don't worry; you have to live in the Peak of Lawu Mountain. In this place, there is a kingdom, and you
have to reign- here. You are the King of this Kingdom because you are the heir of Majapahit throne. And
about your wife, I'll find her for you", answered Bagawan.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl named Nggerang. She was live in a place called Ndoso
Village, Manggarai regency in West Flores. She was aesthetic in beauty. People in that village said that
she was strange because of her father. Her father was ancestral spirit while her mother was a human.
Nggerang had a magic power and ability to transform into whatever she liked from her father. When she
transformed herself into something else, nobody could recognize her.
Nggerang had a beautiful smile. Her skin was smooth and reddish as a princess from heaven. She had
beautiful eyes and nose. Her hair was long, black, and straight.
Many people wanted to marry her, but she did not know what love was. Even she dared to refuse the
King's proposal.
The great King Todo wanted to marry Nggerang. He sent his messengers to proposed Nggerang. But,
Nggerang had transformed herself and disappeared. When the King's messengers arrived, Nggerang's
mother was surprised. The messengers explained about what they came for. Then a Tongka (spokesman)
was invited to talk about Nggerang.
"The King's will is so kind if the King wanted another girl from this village that would be better. It is hard
for us if the King wanted to marry Nggerang," said Tongka.
"Why is it hard?" ask one of the messengers.
"If she is at home or can see in this village, it won't be hard for us to call her."
"Where does she go?" ask the messenger again.
"We don't know sir," said Tongka.
"Did you hide her?" "If you would like Sir" said Tongka, "You can search for that’ girl in every part of
the houses in this village."
They searched for Nggerang, but nobody was able to find her. The result was nothing. The King's
messengers back to the palace without Nggerang.
The next few days, the King heard that Nggerang came back to the village. He sent his messengers to
propose Nggerang again. Unfortunately, when the messengers entered Nggerang's house, she transformed
herself and disappeared again. This is the second time the King failed to propose Nggerang.
King Pongkor, a family of King Todo, heard about Nggerang. He sent messengers to propose Nggerang.
But they came back without Nggerang, just as King Todo's messengers. Nggerang did not want to marry
anybody.
Besides those two kings, there are two others kings, King Cibal and Mori Reok. The were from North
Manggarai and heard about the beauty of Nggerang. They were also sent their messengers to propose
Nggerang, and they failed.
Mori Dima from Bima was also failing to propose Nggerang and disappointed. Because of that, he blew
up magic power to Ndoso village. Then, a thick dark cloud came to the village.
The villagers felt that the thick cloud as a big wave that would destroy them all. The cloud would stop if
Nggerang wanted to marry Mori Dima. But Nggerang still did not care. It made the villagers angry and
wanted to kill Nggerang so they could get rid of the cloud.
It was so hard to kill Nggerang. One day, when somebody wanted to kill her, she disappeared. The only
way to subdue is her magic power first. A shaman was called to kill Nggerang. This shaman had stronger
magic power than Nggerang. Nggerang was not able to transform again. Then shaman killed her, and the
cloud was gone.
Nggerang was kill. Her body was bury but her smooth skin was- taken to Todo. Nggerang's skin was use
as a drum. The drum made from Nggerang's skin sounded, "Tu..tuung Loke Nggerang, Tu..tuung Loke
Nggerang".
The sound was so loud so that Mori Dima in Bima, Sumbawa could hear it. That drum only hit toward
Penti party, a traditional New Year party to honor the ancestors.
LEGENDS THE RIVER OF BANYUWANGI
Once upon a time in eastern Java, lived a patih. His name is Sidapaksa. He had a most beautiful wife of
fine and noble character.
Patih Sidapaksa loved his wife deeply. However, Sidapaksa's mother hates her daughter-in-law because
she happened to be of lower caste. Each day she tried to think how to separate Patih Sidapaksa from his
wife.
The old woman contrived an evil plan. By flattery and intelligent persuasion, Sidapaksa's mother makes a
plan with King Sindureja. They asked Patih Sidapaksa to go to Mount Ijen to search for the magic flower.
This magical flower has mystical power. Whoever wore the flower, they would remain forever young and
beautiful. Patih Sidapaksa needs to find this flower and present it to his wife.
Patih Sidapaksa heard the royal command. A great sadness filled his heart. He will leave his beloved wife
for he knew not how long. Moreover, in a few months, she would give birth to their first child.
Sidapaksa had to obey his King and carry out this commands. He permits to his wife and said farewell.
Without any suspicious to his mother, he took leave of her respectfully and submissively.
Sidapaksa entreated her to watch over his child until his return. Not long after Sidapaksa's departure, a
son was born to his wife.
One day, while the young mother was bathing, she left her baby boy peacefully sleeping. Her evil mother-
in-law deftly removed the sleeping child from its cradle. Then Sidapaksa's mom threw her little grandson
into the river that flowed nearby.
When Sidapaksa wife returned, she immediately realized her baby was gone. All in the neighborhood
ordered to find her child. But the boy was never found.
The young mother could neither eat nor sleep. Day and night, she grieved for her lost child. Finally, she
became ill and remained in that condition for months.
Two years passed and Patih Sidapaksa returned from his journey. He had succeeded finding the magic
flower. He presented it to the Queen, and his duty performed.
With a light heart, Sidapaksa left the palace to return to his beloved wife and the child he had never seen.
But just as he was about to enter his house, he saw his mother running toward him.
Before he could take another step, his mother stopped him. She told him that in his absence, his wife had
thrown her newborn child into the river.
"Such a woman you married," said the mother.
"Your child, our newborn son she threw into the dirty muddy waters of the river and then disappeared.
Now your wife pretends to be ill."
Many other things the mother told about her daughter-in-law. She said all evil things to make her son hate
his wife.
Patih Sidapaksa believed in everything his mother sail. Then he entered his house. He saw his wife lying
weak and ill on her bed. He opens her Kris and approaching her lovely wife.
With rough and angry voice he said, "Ah wicked. Tell me, before I pierce your body with my kris. Tell
me why you throw our child into the river. Tell me!"
Sidapaksa's wife looked up at him with her pale face calm. She said,
"My dear Sidapaksa, why do you wish to wound me? I love you, my husband I did not kill our child.
Come! Please carry me to the river. I will show you that it was not I who did this evil deed."
Gently, he carried his wife to the edge of the river.
"Now prove to me that you had nothing to do with this terrible deed."
Then Sidapaksa's wife leaped up, threw herself into the river, and disappeared.
Suddenly, two flower buds appeared. The one is larger and taller than another one. Fragrance emanated
from these two flowers. They swayed gently before Sidapaksa fluid.
Then the taller one spoke,
"Sidapaksa, my love, look here beside me our son. You can found him in the bottom of the river, and he
will tell you who drowned him."
The smaller flower bud spoke,
"Father, my mother is innocent. My grandmother threw me into the river. My grandmother is the pride
and jealous. Now my beloved mother has come to be with me, and I am happy. We will never separate
again."
The large flower enfolds the small one. The flowers have together vanished into the water. They are never
to appear again. But they left their fragrance.
Since that time, the river was sweet-scented. The city on its banks called Banyuwangi. Banyu means
water and wangi mean sweet-smeller or fragrance.
Once upon a time, a farmer planted a beet. The beet grew and grew.
One day the farmer pulled on the beet, but the beet did not come up. “Horse, please help me pull up this
beet. I want to eat it for dinner,” said the farmer. “Sure, I’ll help you,” said the horse. But the beet did not
come up.
Then the farmer went to the cow. “dear cow, please help me pull up this beet. I want to eat it for dinner,”
said the farmer. “Sure I’ll help,” said the cow. But the beet did not come up. So the farmer went to a goat.
“My lovely goat, please help me pull up this beet. I want to eat it for dinner,” said the farmer.”Sure I’ll
help,” said the goat. But the beet did not come up.
Next the farmer went to the cat. “Oh my dear cat, please help me pull up this beet. I want to eat it for
dinner,” said the farmer.. “Sure I’ll help.” said the cat. But again the beet did not come up. So the farmer
went to the mouse. “Lovely mouse, please help me pull up this beet. I want to eat it for dinner,” said the
farmer.. “Sure I’ll help.” said the mouse. So the mouse pulled on the cat. The cat pulled on the goat, and
the goat pulled on the cow. The cow pulled on the horse, the horse pulled on the farmer, and the farmer
pulled on the beet. And the beet came up! “Thank you, horse. Thank you cow. Thank you, goat. Thank
you cat. And thank you mouse!” sai the farmer. “Now we can all eat dinner.” And they did.
Once upon a time, there was a young monkey, named Yoko. He was an active and playful monkey.
He lived with his parents and friends in a beautiful mountain. The mountain was covered with huge old
trees that grew tall into the sky. Some of the trees bore delicious fruits. Every day, Yoko and the other
monkeys would eat fruits from the trees heartily. It was always cool up there in the mountain.
When it rained, the water that flowed down the mountain filled the river with Water. Yoko then
could see the people from a nearby village come to the river to catch fish. They also bathed and washed
their clothes in the river. These people did not disturb the trees ot the animals that lived there. It made
Yoko felt secure about his family and friends.
One day, one of the monkeys, Tiro, came screaming and jumping hurriedly from tree to tree.
“Run!” he screamed. “Run, everyone! A huge monster is coming this way. It is eating all the trees with its
large sharp teeth.”
All the monkeys, birds and other creatures that lived in the forest ran for their lives. The sound the
monster made was very loud and frightening. They ran away as afar as they could. The monkeys stayed
where they were until everything was quiet again. When they found their way back, they saw that all the
trees were gone. Some people were standing near the monster which was actually a bulldozer. These
people were different from the ones who went to the river to fish or bath.
Yoko and other monkeys felt very sad. They did not have a home anymore. There was no food left
for them. Eventually, they decided to leave the mountain and find another forest to live in.
Many years ago in Cambodia. There lived the King of the Vultures.
One right, he dreamed that if he could eat the flesh of white elephant, he could become king of the
whole of south-east Asia.
When he woke, he told his servants to catch a white elephant for him. Two of them, dressed in
golden uniforms, flew to where they knew a white elephant was living.
“Oeu, friend elephant, our master has sent us to fetch you to the place as he would like to eat white
elephant’s flesh.
The white elephant was frightened to hear this. However, there was nothing he could do as the King
of the Vultures was so powerful.
He said goodbye to his wife and children and left for
the Vulture King’s palace.
On his way there, he met his friend, Mr. Rabbit. “Where are you going,” asked the rabbit, “and why
do you look so sad?” the white elephant told him what had happened.
“What are you going to do? You’ve a wife and family to look after. Let me come along with you.
I’m sure I’ll be able to find some way to make the King of the Vultures change his mind.”
The elephant was very happy to hear this.
Mr. Rabbit sat on his head and travelled with him to the King of the vulture’s palace.
“Welcome! Welcome!” cried the King of the vultures. On seeing the white elephant arrive. “I’ve
been waiting such along time for you. I’m afraid I shall have to eat you up straight away.”
He told the elephant to kneel down so he could cut off a piece of his trunk. The King of the Vultures
then saw Mr. Rabbit sitting on the elephant’s head, holding on to his two ears.
“Who are you?” he asked. “If you don’t jump down immediately. I’ll eat you up as well.”
“Please wait a moment,” said Mr. Rabbit. “Can You please tell me what the trouble is?”
The King of the Vultures told him about his dream.
“Really!” said Mr. Rabbit, “As a matter of fact, I’ve just had a dream myself of marrying your
sister.”
“You can’t do that!” the king of the Vultures shouted.
“In that case,” answered Mr. Rabbit, “to the quite fair, you can’t eat the elephant other.”
The King of the Vultures had to admit that what Mr. Rabbit had said was right.
The elephant returned home to his family and his friend, Mr. Rabbit hopped off back to his home in
the forest.
The Tiger People
Myths
Long ago, there are many tigers in the forest of Sumatra. The Tigers have always stolen away the
villagers’ cattle and frightened them. The villagers never called this tiger by its real name in their
conversation about the tiger.
The villagers thought that the Tigers could understand the human language. They would feel insulted if
weak creatures like the human if they called them by their real name. The villagers knew how big a tiger
could be.
The villagers believe that some Tigers could change themselves into the human being. They also believe
that there were people who could turn themselves into a tiger.
These tiger’s people had a double life. In the daytime, they were the ordinary peasant. At night, they
would leave their huts and creep into the forest to change themselves into tiger. There are many stories
about such tiger people and here is one of them.
Once, there was a sales man who used to travel from village to village to sell cloth. One day, he was on
his way on the road. He carries big bundle of beautiful woven, fabric, sarongs, and headscarves. Finally,
he arrived at a crossroad.
The left the road was broad and smooth. The right it was narrow and full of stones. After a while, he
decided to choose the left road. He thought that a good road would lead him to the real and generous
customers in the village.
He walked on this road. The further he walked the bush becomes the trees which grew on each side of the
road.
When dusk feels, there was still no sign of a village. The sales man did not meet a single person too.
There were only monkeys on the trees and lizards hide in the grass.
A long last, he could hardly see the shadows of the trees. It started to be dark in that forest. Then this sales
man saw a big house.
When he knocked the door, an old woman opened the door and asked what he wanted. He said that he
wanted to sell a cloth, but he could not find any village.
The man asked if the old woman allowed him to stay in her house. He just needs for one night because
the forest was full of tigers. He was afraid if those Tigers would eat him.
The old women feel sorry for the sales man, but he could do nothing. She said that her husband, brother,
and son were all Tigers. If they found the sales man in the house, they would kill him.
The man felt frightened, and he did not know what to do. Finally, the old woman felt sorry for him. Then
she allowed the man entered the house. She warned the man not to make any noise while her family was
at home.
This woman gave the man meal. She took the bundle of cloth from him and hid him in a small room at the
top of the house. Then the man growling and scratching in the room downstairs.
The tiger’s man had come home. As soon as they were inside, those Tigers said, they smelt a man inside
the house. The old woman said that there was no man in the house. She told those Tigers people that a
half an hour ago, a man trying to sell cloth.
He left his cloth and sarongs behind, and then went to the forest to sleep under the tree. Tomorrow he will
come back for the bundle. The woman showed the Tigers people a bundle of cloth.
Those tiger’s people were interested in the fabric and sarongs. They wanted to have one. Every one of
them chose a sarong and a headscarf. Those Tigers paid for those things with big pieces of gold since they
did not have money at all.
After dinner, they decided to go back to the forest to look for the man and frightened him. It would be fun
to scare the daylights out of him, they thought.
The next morning, the old woman woke up the man. She told him to go as fast as he could before the
tigers' people came from the forest. She gave him the pieces of gold. The old woman showed him the
nearest way to the village.
This salesperson thanked the woman then he walked away as fast as he could. He did not stop until he
arrived on the main road and knew that he was safe.
When he looked at his bag, he saw that gold. He found that they were worth a thousand times more than
the cloth the Tigers people had bought. He returned home as a wealthy man. How happy he was.
After a year's latter when he had forgotten about the bad night, he decided to go back. He wants to go to
the house in the forest with some expensive woven cloth and jewels to sell to the tiger’s men.
When he arrived at the place where the crossroad used to be, he found nothing. The broad and smooth
path had disappeared. For days, he walked around the whole area. However, he could not locate the way
to the old woman's house.
“Lutung Kasarung”
MYTH
A long time ago in west Java there was a kingdom. The king was Prabu Tapak Agung. He had two
beautiful daughters and no son. Purba Rarang was his first daughter, and Purba Sari was his second
daughter. When the king was about to pass away he gave the throne to his second daughter, Purba Sari.
Purba Rarang was very disappointed. She thought that she deserve to replace her father as the ruler. She
discussed the situation with her fiancé, Indrajaya.
Then she got an evil idea. She asked a witch to cast a spell to Purba Sari. Soon after that Purba Sari had a
strange skin disease. There were black dots on her skin. She also had skin rash. Consequently Purba
Rarang had a reason to tell people that her sister had a great sin and she was cursed by god. She told her
people that such a person did not qualify to be a leader.
After that she ordered the army to send Purba Sari to a wood and had her exiled there. The army then
built a wooden house for Purba Sari in a wood. So Purba Sari lived in the wood. As there were many
animals in the wood she got along with them well.
Her best friend was a black monkey. She called the monkey Lutung Kasarung. Lutung was very attentive
and very kind to her. He gave fruits and vegetables to Purba Sari.
Lutung Kasarung was not an ordinary monkey. He often meditates like human being. One night when
there was a full moon he sat meditating. He was praying to God. Suddenly a spring emerged beside
Lutung. It became bigger and bigger and finally it became a lake. The water was very clear and aromatic.
The next day Lutung came to see Purba Sari. He asked her to follow him. Lutung took her to the lake and
asked her to take a bath. When Purba Sari took bath in the lake something strange happened. Her skin
disease was gone and her smooth fair skin was back. Purba Sari was very happy and thankful to God.
Meanwhile Purba Rarang who lived in the palace wanted to see her sister. So she went to the wood with
her soldiers. She was very surprised when she saw Purba Sari was in good condition and looked beautiful.
Her evil heart led her to find a way to beat her sister. Then she asked her sister to measure the length of
their hair. The one who had the longest hair would win. Purba Sari’s hair proved to be longer than Purba
Rarang’s.
Purba Rarang was very jealous to her sister. She thought hard to find a way to beat Purba Sari. Then she
got another idea. She asked her sister to compare their fiancé. Purba Rarang was sure that she would win
because Indra Jaya was very handsome. She was sure that Purba Sari did not have any fiancé. When
Purba Rarang showed Indra Jaya, Purba Sari was confused. So she just appointed Lutung Kasarung as her
fiancé.
Purba Rarang laughed out loud.
‘So your fiancé is a monkey?’
Lutung Kasarung then sat on the ground. He was meditating and praying to God. Then amazingly he
changed into a very handsome man. Initially Lutung Kasarung was a handsome man who was punished
by God and became a monkey. After some years that day he got clemency from God and he became
human being again.
Purba Rarang was very surprised. He had no choice but to accept that her sister was better than her. She
asked for apology. Purba Sari gave her apology. After that they went back to palace. Purba Sari became
the queen and married to Lutung Kasarung.
LONG HORN
MYTH
A married couple lives in one village. They have a daughter. Their daughters are teenagers. They also
want boys.
One day, they were blessed with a son. However, the couple did not accept it, because the wife's newborn
baby was horned. They also intend to throw the baby away.
"I'd better take this baby to the river," said the man.
The husband and wife then put the baby in a chest. They also put an egg and a handful of rice. The
husband and wife then washed the baby into the river. Their daughter saw that. He was very sad to know
that his sister was banished by his parents.
"I have to follow the chest," said the girl.
The girl continued to follow the chest containing her sister. When the baby cries in the chest, he then
persuades his sister.
"My brother, if you are Iapar, eat a grain of rice that is in the chest," said his brother.
The baby fell silent. So on. The girl continued to follow her sister's baby chest. Every time his sister cried,
he always managed to persuade him.
For months he followed his younger brother. Until finally the chest arrived at the river bank. How happy
the girl is.
"Finally we can be together," said the girl. However, he was very shocked. From inside the chest, a
handsome young man came out. The young man was not horned at all. In fact, the egg given by his father
was now a rooster.
"Thank you, my brother, so far you have accompanied me," said the young man. Next, let's call him a
long horn call.
"Are you my sister? I can't believe you can be like this," replied his brother.
The two of them then went to one of the villages to continue living. Meanwhile, their father and mother
feel sad. They had thrown away their sons, but they also lost the daughters they loved.
"This is our fault. Like any of our children, we should take good care of them, "said his wife.
They both regretted throwing away his son. But rice has become porridge. They can only pray that one
day all of their children can return to their arms.
The Long Horn has become a handsome young man. Now he, his brother, and his chicken go to one of
the villages. They have no food at all. Olala ... apparently there was a cock fight there. Who can win the
race will get enough money.
"What if your chicken Jagagu joins the competition?" Said his brother.
Long horn agreed. He also included his chicken in the race. It turns out that the rooster of the Long Horn
can defeat all participants. Tanduk Panjang also has the right to get many prizes.
"This money is enough for our needs in the next few months, Sis," said Long Horn.
They then lived from one village to another. They want to go back to their village again. Apparently, in
every village there is a competition against chickens.
Every race, the Chicken of the Long Horn always wins. Finally, they also have a lot of money.
"With this much money, surely our mothers and fathers will not live in poverty again," said the Long
Horn.
"Are you not angry with them?" asked his brother.
The Long Horn shook his head. Apparently, even though both of his parents had thrown it away, he was
not at all angry and hurt. He just wanted to go back to his house.
Finally they returned to their hometown. Their parents could hardly believe that their two children had
returned. They are grateful that God has granted their prayer. However, the two Long Horn parents did
not recognize the dashing young man. Yes, because the child they threw away was horned.
"You have returned my child. Where have you been all this time?" asked his father to the older sister of
the Long Horn.
"I look after my sister. This is the Long Horn that you dumped first," said the brother of Tanduk Panjang.
Their father and mother were open-mouthed, barely believing. They apologized for throwing away the
Long Horn.
"I've forgiven you," said Long Horn, wise.
Finally, the two parents hugged the Long Horn. Now, they can return to live together. In fact, their lives
did not lack anymore, because the Long Horn brought a lot of money from its chicken fighting
competition.
ANGELS LAKE
(FOLKTALE)
Long time ago, there is a handsome young man. His name is Awang Sukma. Awang Sukma wanders up
to the middle of the jungle. He was amazed to see a wide variety of life in the forest. He built a tree house
in a very large tree limb. He lived in the forest in harmony and peace. After a long stay in the forests,
Awang Sukma was appointed ruler of that area and got the title "Datu". Once a month, Awang Sukma
get around his territory, and he arrived in a clear lake. The lake is under a shady tree with many fruits.
The birds and insects lives happily.
"Hmm, how beautiful this lake! This forest has extraordinary beauty" Datu Awang Sukma
wondered.
The next day, when Datu Awang Sukma was blowing his flute, he heard the noise of a low in the lake. On
the sidelines of the fissured rock pile, Datu Awang Sukma peering toward the lake. Awang Sukma
astonishment when he saw 7 beautiful girls are playing water. "Could they be the fairies?" thought Awang

took their cows to the grass field on the mountain. They didn’t know there was a dragon. One of the
shepherds was very skinny and dirty. His friends always made fun of him. The skinny shepherd never got
angry. He just kept quiet and left his friends every time they laughed at him. It was a very hot day. All
shepherds were very tired. They wanted to find a cool place to rest. The skinny shepherd had already
found a nice place to rest. It was under a big tree. The place was cool so he did not feel hot anymore. His
friends were jealous.
“Let’s steal his place,” said one of them.
“Yes! Let’s do it!” other shepherds agreed.
