Introduction :
• It is a Madani Surah with 2 Rukoo and 18 Verses. Surah Al-Hujrat is in

• In this surah the etiquettes of attending the court of Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) have been described and moral lesson to pass
the life in a society in a good way has also been told.
• It contains the instructions for Muslims to:-
• Restrict to the orders of Allah and His Apostle.
• Respect the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
• Verify coming news before taking any action.
Cont…..
• Love Imaan (belief) and dislike Kufr (un-belief).
• Fight against the transgressors / oppressors.
• Make peace between the Muslim brothers.
• Not to laugh at others (men and women both).
• Not to defame or call others by offensive nick-names.
• Avoid suspicion, curiosity and spying on people.
• Refrain / keep away with back-biting of others.
• Maintain equality among all human beings.
• Take as honorable the one who observes piety.
Verse#1

• Translation:
• O believers do not Exceed over Allah and His Messenger
and fear Allah. Surely , Allah is All-Hearing, All-knowing.
Explanation:
• This is the basic demand of the faith. If the person who regards Allah
as his Lord and accepts Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as his
guide and leader, he can never have the attitude that he should give
his own opinion and view precedence over the decision of Allah and
His Messenger (peace be upon him), or should adopt an independent
opinion in the matters, and pass his own judgments without caring to
find out whether Allah and His Messenger have given any guidance in
those matters or not, and if they have given it, what it is. According to
this verse, do not go ahead of them, but follow behind.

• Translation:
• O Believers! Do not raise your voices above the voice of
the Prophet and do not speak loud in presence of Him
as you shout to one another, lest your deeds become
vain while you are unaware.
Explanation:
• This is the etiquette that was taught to the people who sat among the
audience of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or came to visit him. Its
intention was that the believers should treat the Prophet (peace be
upon him) with the highest respect and reverence when visiting him
and talking to him. Nobody should raise his voice louder than his. The
people should not be unmindful of the fact that they are addressing
the Messenger (peace be upon him) of Allah, and not a common
man, or a person of equal rank. Therefore, there should be a marked
difference between one’s tone of conversation with the common
people and one’s tone of conversation with the Prophet (peace be
upon him), and no one should talk to him in a voice louder than his.

• Translation:
Indeed those who lower down their voices in the
presence of the Messenger of Allah, those are they
whose hearts has been refined by Allah for piety. For
them is forgiveness and great reward.
Explanation:
• That is, only those people give due reverence to the Messenger
(peace be upon him) of Allah, who have passed successfully through
the tests and trials set by Allah and proved by their steadfastness that
their hearts indeed possess taqwa (piety). From this, it follows
automatically that the heart which is devoid of reverence for the
Prophet (peace be upon him) is, in fact, devoid of taqwa, and a
person’s raising his voice louder than the Prophet’s (peace be upon
him) is not only an uncivilized act but also a sign of the absence of
taqwa in his heart.

• Translation:
• Indeed , those who call out to you from behind your
apartments, most of them have no (are devoid)
understanding of manners. And if they had patience,
until you (yourself) come out to them . It would have
been better for them. And Allah is All-forgiving, Most
Merciful.
Explanation:
• The above verse had been revealed about the delegation of Banu
Tamim tribe who arrived Madina and began to call the Prophet
Muhammad (Peace be upon him) of behind the apartments when he
was sleeping at midday. God had taught the etiquettes to masses for
attending the assembly of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). Therefore He
declared the disrespect of Banu Tamim as ignorance and unwise. He
taught them regards that it had been better for them to wait till the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came out from the midday sleep.

Translation :
“ O believers if any disobedient comes to you with any news , verify
it(make a strict enquiry) lest you may hurt people improperly then
you remain repenting on what you have done .”
Explanation:
• It is said in this verse that whenever you receive important news
bearing upon a vital matter, you should not accept it immediately but
should first examine the man who has brought it. If he is an evil man
whose report is not authentic normally, you should inquire into it
carefully to ascertain the truth instead of accepting it and acting on it
immediately.

has to follow in much of the affairs, you would then surely being

your hearts and He has made disbelief, evil-doing and disobedience
hateful to you , such persons are those who are rightly guided. This
is a bounty of Allah and blessing , and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Explanation:
• Allah drew the attention that the Holy Prophet(PBUH) is present
amongst you who knows every thing with the light of Divine and
revelation of God. Therefore, you are not supposed to take any step
without his (PBUH) permission. If you insist him to come to agree on
any point, you would be in trouble. But God has obliged through His
blessings, who decorated your hearts with faith and made obscenity
undesirable.

• Translation:
“And if two groups of Muslims fight each other,
then make peace between them but if one of them transgresses
against the other, then fight the one that is transgressing till it reverts
to the command of Allah. Then if it reverts rectify between them with
justice and do justice. Verily Allah loves those who uphold justice”
Explanation :
• In the above verse , order had been given to reconcile between the
two fighting groups of Muslims with justice and equity. Those wo do
so , God has a good news of including them as His favorite. Allah
almighty does not approve that the other Muslims should just sit and
watch the clash when two groups of their own community have fallen
to mutual fighting. But whenever such a sad situation arises all the
believers should become concerned and should do whatever they can
to bring about peace and reconciliation between the parties. They
should urge the parties to desist from fighting; they should exhort
them to fear God. Their influential people should go and talk to the
responsible men of the two sides, should find out the causes of the
dispute and do whatever they can to effect reconciliation between
them.

• Translation:
• “Muslims are brothers ,therefore, make peace between the two
brothers and fear Allah ,that mercy may be shown to you.”
Explanation:
• This verse establishes a universal brotherhood of all the Muslims of
the world, and it is by virtue of this that the sort of fraternity that
exists among the Muslims exists among the followers of no other
religion and creed. The importance of this command has been
explained by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in many of his
traditions from which one can understand its full significance and
spirit.as it is said that God keeps on helping His obedient man till he
keeps on helping his brother”
• The establishment of brother hood between local and refugees is
such an example of Islamic brotherhood which has no parallel in the
world.

• Translation:
• O believers ! Let not the men scoff at the men , perchance they may
be better those who scoff and nor the women at the women
perchance that they may be better than those who scoff and do not
taunt one another and nor call one another by offensive nick
names. What a bad name is to be called a disobedient after being a
Muslim and those who repent not , they are the unjust.
Explanation:
• In the above verse three following orders have been given to regard
the Islamic values:
• 1. Not to ridicule others; any Muslim man/woman may not be
ridiculed on the pretext of shape & face, poverty and avoid to laugh
and vexing of heart.
• 2. not to taunt others; one must avoid to taunt others man/woman
even by hint because it will hurt his/her feelings.
• 3. not to call with bad titles, it means not to keep names to others for
irritation . Any how for the identification of any one’s actual quality
may be told in such a way that may not reflect bed intentions.

• Translation:
• O, believers, avoid most suspicions, verily some suspicion are sinful
and do not look out for faults and do not back bite one another.
Would any of you to like, to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You
would abominate it, and fear Allah . Verily Allah is oft-returning ,
Merciful.
Explanation:
• This verse has been revealed in continuation of the previous verse.
Four orders have been passed for Muslims to teach social etiquettes.
• 1. Avoid from suspicion: in Ahadith, instructions have been contained
to avoid from suspicion and have good opinion for others because
suspicion takes a man to false accusation, which creates distances
between each other. It teaches a lesson to avoid from doubts.
• 2. Not to spy: Do not grope after the secrets of the people: do not
search for their defects and weaknesses: do not pry into their
conditions and affairs. Whether this is done because of suspicion, or
for causing harm to somebody with an evil intention, or for satisfying
one’s own curiosity, it is forbidden by the Shariah in every case.
Cont…
• 3. Back-biting: It is saying on the back of a person something which
would hurt him if he came to know of it. This definition has been
reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) defined it as follows:
• “It is talking of your brother in a way irksome to him. It was asked:
What, if the defect being talked of is present in my brother? The
Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: If it is present in him, it would
be ghibat; if it is not there, it would be slandering him”.
• 4. Fear Allah.

• Translation:
“O people we created you from one man and one woman
and made you branches and tribes that you may recognize one
another undoubtedly, the most respected among you in the sight of
Allah is , he who is more pious verily, Allah is knowing ,Aware.”
Explanation:
• In this verse, lesson has been given for human equality. When the
generation of Hazrat Adam spread through out the world; then for
their recognition, God has classified them into branches and tribes on
the basis pf races , regions and languages. It was not the objective of
this classification that any branch or tribe has become superior than
other on the basis of language, region, wealth and majority. But this
classification has been for recognition only so that people may easily
recognize each other and they may introduce each other
conveniently.

• Translation:
The Bedouins say: “We believe.”(O Prophet), say to them:
“You do not believe; you should rather say: 'We have
submitted’”; belief has not yet entered in your hearts. If you
obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not diminish anything
(from the reward of )any of your deeds. Surely Allah is Most
Forgiving, Most Compassionate.
Translation:
• This does not imply all the desert Arabs but only a few particular
groups of the Bedouins who had become Muslims, seeing the
increasing power of Islam, thinking that they would not only remain
safe from any attack by the Muslims but would also gain materially
from the Islamic conquests. These people had not embraced Islam
sincerely but had professed faith only verbally in order to be counted
among the Muslims, and their inner state became exposed whenever
they would come before the Prophet (peace be upon him) with
different sorts of demands and would enumerate and mention their
rights as if they had done him a great favor by accepting Islam.

• The believers are only those who have believed in Allah
and His Messenger and then have never doubted and
have struggled with their possession and their lives in
the way of Allah , those are the truthful ones.
Explanation:
• In this holy verse , God has described the qualities of Believers
(Momin) that believers are those who have faith in Allah and His
messenger(PBUH) and then never doubted. But on His decree they
sacrifice their lives and belongings in His way. Those who expose their
faith practically are true believers.

• Translation:
Say, (O Prophet), (to these pretenders to faith): “Are you apprising
Allah of your faith? Allah knows all that is in the heavens and the
earth. Allah has full knowledge of everything.” They count it as a
favour to you that they accepted Islam. Say: “Do not regard your
(accepting) Islam as a favour to me; rather, Allah has bestowed a
favour on you by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful (in your claim
to be believers). Surely Allah knows every hidden thing of the
heavens and the earth. Allah sees all that you do.
Explanation:
• In those Holy verses , Allah accepted the request of those companion
in such a way that If they are true believers, they don’t need to tell.
Because God, not only knows your faith and religion but He knows
each and everything of the heaven and the earth. Mentioning of your
Islam is not a favour on any body . Because it is a favour of Allah who
has guided you to embrace Islam .Allah knows the unseen of the
heavens and the earth , Allah is seeing our works and He is well aware
of the modes and matters in our hearts.
