Lisbon Tile
by Jo Avery ©2018

Introduction
I have based my block on an interpretation
of a few different tiles I saw on a recent trip
to Lisbon. It’s made using four identical FPP
templates.

You will need:

Black/charcoal fabric 12” x 14” piece

White fabric 14” x 18” piece
Turquoise fabric 8” x 12” piece
1 each of the paper FPP templates A - D
50wt Aurifil thread in a neutral shade

Notes

Press fabrics before cutting. Read pattern through in full before starting.
Check templates are printed at actual size before cutting, your template should measure 6½”
square on the outer line. This is a Foundation Paper Piecing pattern so reduce your machine stitch
length to 1.5 before starting.

Cutting

1. From the black fabric cut the following: One 3” x 14” strip, subcut into two 3” squares.
Two 4” x 14” strips.

2. From the white fabric cut the following: One 3” x 18” strips, subcut into six 3” squares.
One 3 x 18” strip. Two 4” x 18” strips.

3. From the turquoise fabric cut the following: One 5” x 12” strip, subcut into two 5” squares.
One 3” x 12” strip.
Assembling the Block

1. Cut one of the white 3” squares in half on the diag-

onal line to make two triangles. Place one of these on
the back of paper template A with the wrong side facing
the back of the paper and ensuring that the fabric cov-
ers the whole of section 1 plus at least ¼” overlapping
section 2.

2. Cut one of the black 3” squares in half on the diag-

onal line and pin RST with the white triangle so that
when flipped over at the seam line, the black fabric will
cover section 2 plus at least ¼” overlapping section 3
and 4. Flip the template so that the paper is uppermost
and sew along the seam line between sections 1 and
2, extending into the marked seam line.

3. Flip the template back over, fold and then press the
black fabric over so it covers section 2. Fold the paper
back at the seam line between sections 2 and 3 and
trim the fabric to ¼” beyond the paper fold. Repeat be-
tween sections 2 and 4.

4. Repeat this process to cover sections 3 and 4 with

white fabric triangles, cut from the 3” squares. Cut the
5” turquoise square in half on the diagonal line and use
one of the triangles to cover section 5.

5. Continue piecing in this way using the white 4” strips

to cover sections 6 and 7.

6. Use one of the black 5” strips to cover section 8 and

the turquoise strip to cover section 9. Use your remain-
ing 3” strip of white fabric to cover section 10.

7. Repeat step six to cover sections 11 - 13 (fig.1). Fig.2

8. Using instructions in steps 1 - 7 complete three iden- Fig.3

tical quarter blocks using paper templates B - D. Press
and trim away any excess fabric to size along the outer
line of the paper template (fig.2).

9. Sew the completed A quarter to the B quarter. Sew

the C quarter to the D quarter. Sew A/B to C/D. Press.
Remove the papers by tearing carefully along the seam
lines (fig.3).
