Math Division for Future Teachers

This document provides instruction on teaching division of whole numbers to primary grade students. It discusses division as repeated subtraction and as the inverse of multiplication. Examples are provided to show how to express division using repeated subtraction and relate division to multiplication. The basic division facts are presented. Students are expected to be able to relate division to repeated subtraction and inverse multiplication, find quotients of basic division problems, and solve word problems involving division and other operations.

MODULE I, Lesson 5
Division of Whole Numbers

Introduction
The basic idea division is inverse multiplication. In this module, you will be taught on how to
teach division of whole numbers to your future pupils.

Instruction
Read the discussion to be able to answer the questions that follow. Perform the required
tasks. Submit the required outputs on the designated retrieval areas after two weeks upon receipt of
this module.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of this module, the students must have:

1. relate division as a repeated subtraction;

2. express division as inverse operation of multiplication;

3. find the quotients of basic division facts;

4. solved multi-step word problems involving division and other operations.

Learning Content

Dividing whole numbers is the opposite of multiplying whole numbers. It is the process by
which we try to find out how many times a number is contained in another number.

The process of division can be expressed as:

_5_
10 ÷ 2 = 5 or =5 or 10 2

where,
10 is called the dividend or the number being divided;
2 is called the divisor or the number that divides; and
5 is called quotient or he answer in the division.

Module 1, Lesson 5 1
Division as a Repeated Subtraction
Division is called repeated subtraction. To answer the question, “how many 2s are in 10”?, we
may either subtract 2 from ten repeatedly or simply divide.
To find the number of 2s in 10 using repeated subtraction, we subtract 2 from 10 repeatedly
until the difference is 0.
10 ÷ 2 = 5

(i) 10 - 2 = 8

(ii) 8 - 2 = 6

(iii) 6 - 2 = 4

(iv) 4 - 2 = 2

(v) 2 - 2 = 0 The process shows that there five 2s in 10.

Other examples
(a) 25 ÷ 5 = 5

(Repeated Subtraction)

(i) 25 - 5 = 20

(ii) 20 - 5 = 15

(iii) 15 - 5 =10

(iv) 10 - 5 = 5

(v) 5 - 5 = 0

(c) 50 ÷ 10 = 5

(Repeated Subtraction)

(i) 50 - 10 = 40.

(ii) 40 - 10 = 30

(iii) 30 - 10 = 20

(iv) 20 - 10 = 10

(v) 10 - 10 = 0

Module 1, Lesson 5 2
Division is the inverse of multiplication

Division is inverse operation of multiplication.

a. (i) 12 × 10 = 120

(ii) 120 ÷ 10= 12

(iii) 120 ÷ 12 = 10

b. b. (i) 25 × 5 = 125

(ii) 125 ÷ 5 = 25

(iii) 125 ÷ 25 = 5

Relation between Dividend, Divisor, Quotient

divisor x quotient = dividend

dividend divisor = quotient

dividend quotient = divisor

Division Sentence Multiplication Sentence Answer

9 x ___ = 81 Since 9 x 9 = 81, then 81 9 = 9.

81 9 = ___

42 7 = ___ 7 x ___ = 42 Since 7 x 6 = 42, then 42 7 = 6.
