This document discusses the construction and materials used in internal combustion engine components like the cylinder block, cylinder head, valves, pistons, and rings. It describes the cylinder block as a cast and machined part that has cylinder walls finished to a very accurate micron level surface finish. The cylinder head is also cast from iron or aluminum alloys and contains intake and exhaust valves, push rods, and manifolds. Valves are made of special alloys and opened or closed by springs. Pistons are typically made of aluminum alloy for its light weight and better thermal properties than cast iron. Rings seal the gap between the piston and cylinder wall and are made of various hardened materials.

CYLINDER BLOCK CONSTRUCTION

1. It is the basic framework of the engine

2.

The cylinder block is basically a casting product.

3.

The cylinder block is machined and honed to a very accurate finish for good lubrication and ring seating.

4.

The cylinder walls are finished to 1 micron finish with a fine rotating hone.

5.

An intersecting visible cross-hatch pattern is produced by the hone form.

1. Cylinder head is cast using cast iron and aluminum alloy.

2. Aluminum alloy is used for weight reduction and greater thermal conductivity.

1.

Gaskets are used to provide the tight fitting joint between two surfaces.

2.

Used between cylinder head and block, crankcase and oil pan, between cylinder block and manifold or water pump.
