The League of Nations-JM

The cartoon criticizes the League of Nations' response to Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931. It depicts the League as an incomplete bridge missing its keystone, representing the United States who did not join. Without US support, the cartoon suggests the League will fail to restrain Japan or prevent another war. In response to League condemnation, Japan withdrew its membership in 1933 and continued exploiting Manchuria to build its military and economic power in East Asia.

The League of Nation

Analyze the cartoon, what is the message of the cartoon regarding the actions of the
league of Nation after the Invasion of Manchuria.

 The bridge represents the League of Nations with the key stone missing.
 The League is not complete and will collapse without the keystone.
 Meaning: The League is weak.

 Under the bridge there is a deep dark cliff.

 If the bridge collapses the world will fall into disaster.
 Meaning: Without the League, there might be another war.

o The keystone is the US and is not part of the bridge.

o America not joining the League.
o Meaning: Without America the League will fail.

The idea of the League was to achieve collective security to overcome border disputes
and prevent another world war from occurring.

The 'Gap in the Bridge' cartoon tells us several important things. Germany was missing.
Russia was missing. The cartoon doesn't mention Japan. The bridge idea is to show its
ability to join countries and provide a means of communication. The importance of the
gap is to suggest that the bridge will fall apart without the USA.

“Further and deeper”

A cartoon by David Low “Further and deeper” published in the UK newspaper the
Evening Standard, 19 January 1938. The cartoon depicts the Japanese military leading
two men, labelled “Jap industry” and “Jap politics”, into China.

What is Low’s message regarding the impact of the invasion of China on Japan in this
cartoon?

The League called upon member states to withhold

recognition from the new puppet state. Japan’s
response was to formally withdraw from the world
body in 1933. Thereafter, Japan poured technicians and
capital into Manchukuo, exploiting its rich resources to
establish the base for the heavy-industry complex that
was to undergird its “new order” in East Asia

Japan’s relations with the democratic powers

deteriorated steadily. The United States and Great
Britain did what they could to assist the Chinese
Nationalist cause.
