Workplace Conversations
[M-Am] Oh, Julie. On your way out, can you take this folder and
give it to George when you see him? It’s the list of clients
he’s supposed to meet on Friday. By the way, did you
hear he’s retiring next month?
[F-Cn] Yeah. That came as quite a shock. I expected him to be
promoted. I hope they find a replacement soon.
[M-Am] I don’t think they’re looking for anyone. We’ll probably
have to do his job between us, which is far from ideal.
[F-Cn] No way! That’s terrible. We’re overworked already!
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Br] Hmm. Yes.
[M-Am] Maybe we can meet here every Friday?
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following conversation with
three speakers.
[F-Cn] Good afternoon. Are you looking for anything in
particular?
[M1-Am] Yes. You had an advertisement in the local paper recently.
It said you’re offering 25 percent off any laser printer this
month. Is that right?
[F-Cn] Yes, that’s right. Well, any SupaSave laser printer, that is,
from our selection over by the window.
[M2-Am] Oh, I see. So they’re the ones on sale.
[F-Cn] Yes. They’re not the latest models, of course, but they’re
still very good and an excellent value.
[M2-Am] Hmm. Yes. So what’s the catch?
[F-Cn] Oh, there’s no catch! All you need is a SupaSave
Business account. If you don’t have one already, I can fill
out the forms for you.
3. [M-Cn] I don’t see why you don’t apply. It’s a great opportunity,
and the salary is good.
[F-Au] Yes, but it’s not really a position I’m interested in. I worked
in sales before, and it’s too stressful.
[M-Cn] I know what you mean, but there’s no harm in sending
in your résumé, is there? At least you’ll get some
interviewing practice, and they might have a different job
you can do.
[F-Au] No. I don’t want to worry all the time about meeting
targets, and there’s too much travel. It’s not for me.
4. [M-Am] OK, so that’s one coach-fare ticket to Singapore. You’ll be
staying at the Mandarin Oriental for five nights, breakfast
included.
[F-Cn] Great. And then the flight to Hong Kong is confirmed?
[M-Am] Yes. You leave on Friday, at ten o’clock, staying three
nights, meals included, at the Grand Hotel before heading
back to New York.
[F-Cn] OK. That sounds fine. Do you want me to pay a deposit
now?
5. [M-Am] Tina? I think there’s something wrong with my monitor.
I can’t see the cursor on the screen, and it makes it
impossible to get anything done.
[F-Au] Oh, that sounds serious. Have you tried turning it off and
on again?
[M-Am] Yes, I’ve done that and the problem is still the same. I
can’t use it at all. I need to figure this out quickly because
I have some spreadsheets I need to print.
[F-Au] It might be the mouse, you know. Let’s check the
connections and see if that makes any difference.
2. [F-Cn] Hello. I’d like to bring these back, please. I’m not sure if
they’re overdue.
[M-Au] OK. Let me see. Umm… yes, they are, I’m afraid. They
should have been returned last Friday. There’s a charge of
$8 on your account.
[F-Cn] Oh, I’m so sorry. I forgot all about them. I haven’t even
read them!
[M-Au] Well, I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do. We’ll have to
collect the fees for late returns.
3. [M-Br] OK, I think I’ve fixed that leak for you. One of the pipes
under the sink had a small hole in it, so I replaced it.
[F-Au] Great. Thanks for coming over so quickly. There was
water all over the kitchen floor.
[M-Br] Happy to help. Just sign here at the bottom of this form.
You have full coverage for this, so there’s no need to pay.
[F-Au] That’s great. I’m really glad I took out that policy now!
4. [F-Cn] The regional manager will be here next week, for our
annual review.
[M-Am] Yes, I know. I’ve prepared a schedule already. Do you
think we should get all the shift supervisors together at the
end of this week to discuss it?
[F-Cn] It wouldn’t hurt. We can meet in my office and I’ll give
them a brief overview of what’s planned. This will be my
first annual review since I took over running this store, so I
want to make sure things go well.
[M-Am] I’m sure it will all be fine.
5. [M-Br] Excuse me. Do you think I could have another orange
juice, please?
[F-Cn] Yes, of course. Can I ask you to keep your seat belt
fastened while you’re sitting down? It can get a little
bumpy if we hit any turbulence.
[M-Br] Oh, OK. Sorry. I didn’t realize I left it off. I’ve been feeling a
little airsick, actually.
[F-Cn] Well, we should be landing in around a half hour. I’ll get
you your drink now.
Activities
Exercise B p63 Track 72
1. [M-Au] Hi, Susan. How did it go last week? Were there many
people there?
[F-Am] Yes, it was packed the whole time. There must have been
over 3,000 visitors. Our booth was right in the center of
the main hall, so the location couldn’t have been better.
[M-Au] Great. Did you get any new orders?
[F-Am] A couple of good contacts, which I need to follow up on,
but no firm orders yet.
2.
.
3. [F-Br] Have you had any feedback about how your interview
went?
[M-Am] No. It’s been three weeks now and I haven’t heard a thing.
I was wondering about contacting them, but I don’t want
to seem too desperate.
[F-Br] Well, maybe it’s worth just giving them a call. I mean, it
won’t do any harm, will it?
[M-Am] I guess not. And all this uncertainty is making me stressed
out.
5. [F-Cn] Here’s my key. Room 314. I’d like to check out, please.
[M-Br] Certainly, ma’am. Was everything to your satisfaction?
[F-Cn] Yes, it was fine, thanks. The room was a little too warm
overnight, though, and I couldn’t open the window. The
air-conditioning controls don’t work.
[M-Br] Oh, I’m sorry about that. The windows don’t open, I’m
afraid, as the building is completely sealed to control
the temperature. I’m sorry you were too warm. I’ll pass
that message about the controls on to the maintenance
manager. Thank you for mentioning it.
Locations
Exercise B p65 Track 73
1. [F-Cn] So you want a compact four-door, that’s for two weeks,
with full insurance?
[M-Am] Yes, that’s right. And unlimited mileage. I’d like to drop it
off at Los Angeles airport.
[F-Cn] No problem. Just make sure you keep all your documents
with you to hand in when you get there. OK, so with the
child safety seat as extra, and all taxes, that comes to
$812. How would you like to pay?
3. [M-Au] OK. I’m off now. Is there anything you want me to get on
my way home?
[F-Cn] No, that’s all right. We don’t need anything from the store.
[M-Au] It’s the last game of the season, so I might be late getting
back. It’ll probably be packed.
[F-Cn] Don’t worry. You just enjoy the game. I hope they win for a
change!
4. [F-Au] And here are your tickets. The seat numbers are printed
on the side, right there. It can take time to make your way
to your seats, so make sure you arrive well in advance.
[M-Br] Oh, OK. Thanks. K25 and 26. Where are they?
[F-Au] If you look at this seating plan, you can see you’ll be
sitting about halfway in this row here in the middle. You
should have a great view of the stage, and you’ll be able
to hear the orchestra perfectly from there.
[M-Br] That’s great. Thank you.
5. [F-Am] How did the visit to the supplier go?
[M-Cn] It went really well. They showed me around the design
studio, and their production facilities. It’s a big place. They
gave me some samples of the new fabrics they’re working
on, too, and I got their latest catalog.
[F-Am] Well, if they can give us the same discount as last year,
then I think we might put their new summer line in the
window.
[M-Cn] Good idea. The customers seem to like their styles a lot,
so it should help us draw more people in.
Mini Test – Topics, People, Activities, and Locations p66 Track 74
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Oh, about next Friday, for Mr. Asano. Have you organized
anything yet?
[F-Br] Yes, I’ve booked the conference room from five o’clock. We’re
having some sandwiches and soft drinks brought in.
[M-Am] OK, that sounds good. We’re going to give him a silver clock,
since he’s been here 20 years. I’m going to pick it up now.
What time should I tell everyone to be there?
[F-Br] Let’s say it starts at five-thirty. You might want to say a few
words first as office manager, and then I think everyone will
want to say their good-byes.
[
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Cn] Here is your receipt, sir. And this is a form you need to fill in if
you want to claim the tax back. Since you’ve spent a lot, it’s
probably worth it.
[M-Am] Oh, right. So I can get the tax back. Eighty-four dollars.
That’s good. It’s a very long form. You can’t do it for me here,
can you?
[F-Cn] No, sorry. You have to go to the Tax Refund desk at the airport
when you get there. There’s one in each terminal. Make sure
you allow enough time, though, as it’s usually very busy.
[M1-Cn] Do you know when they’re going to finish the office
renovation?
[M2-Br] I have no idea. It’s been three months now. I spoke to
someone in HR and they said it should have been finished
two weeks ago.
[M1-Cn] But they haven’t even started painting! And the elevator isn’t
installed yet. I was late for my last meeting because it took
so long to get to the fifth floor.
[F-Au] I know it’s difficult for you guys, but hang in there.
[M2-Br] All the banging and drilling is very disruptive. I can’t
concentrate. Can you bring it up at the next board meeting?
[F-Au] Sure. If you want me to.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Cn] That fan’s way too noisy. I can hardly hear the presenter.
Somebody should complain.
[F-Am] Hmm. I told that guy over there, Bill. He’s the organizer. He
says they can’t turn it off because it would get too hot, but
they’ll try to fix it at the break.
[M-Cn] That’s another half an hour! He should have sorted it out at the
start.
[F-Am] Hmm. I don’t know why they can’t just move us to another
room.
[M-Cn] It’s crazy.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Guess what? On the way back from Hong Kong they upgraded
me to business class.
[F-Am] No way!
[M-Am] Yeah. It’s the first time ever. I couldn’t believe it.
[F-Am] So how was it?
[M-Am] Great! I had a big seat, good food. The service was excellent.
[F-Am] Lucky you. That’s great.
Mini Test - Conversations Including a Graphic p78 Track 81
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation and
information.
[F-Cn] Here’s your passport and boarding card, sir. I hope you have a
pleasant flight.
[M-Am] Thank you. Oh, is the flight on time? I saw on the screen there
are some delays.
[F-Cn] That’s just Moscow because of the snow, and there’s an air
traffic controllers’ strike affecting flights to France. There are no
other delays for flights into Europe, so your flight should be on
time.
[M-Am] OK, great. Thanks a lot. So, it’s Gate 3?
[F-Cn] Yes, that’s right, sir. Just go through security and turn left.
You’d better hurry though. You don’t have much time.
[M-Am] OK. Thank you!
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation and list.
Practice 4 Track 85
[M-Am] I’ve just spoken to the conductor and he said he has no idea
when we’ll get moving again. Apparently there’s been an
accident further up the line and everything’s delayed.
[F-Cn] Oh, no. It really is ridiculous. Philip’s supposed to meet us at
the station. He’s probably already there.
[M-Am] It’s only the next stop. Why don’t we take a taxi instead?
[F-Cn] Good idea. I’ll call him on my cell phone now and let him know.
Practice 5 Track 86
[M-Au] Hello. I have an appointment at three-thirty. The name’s
Chadwick.
[F-Am] Yes, Mr. Chadwick. Three-thirty to see Dr. Parkes. Please take
a seat in the waiting room and he’ll call you.
[M-Au] Thank you. Oh, and I’d like to book an appointment to see
the nurse while I’m here to have a blood test. I was supposed
to do it last month, but I forgot. Do you have anything for
tomorrow?
[F-Am] OK, let me see. Hmm, I’m afraid we have nothing available in
the system, but sometimes we get cancellations. I’ll make a
note to give you a call as soon as something comes up.
Review Test p87 Track 87
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Excuse me, ma’am. This is just a routine check. Would you put
your bag on here and open it for me, please?
[F-Br] Oh, yes. Of course. I don’t think I have anything I shouldn’t
have. Here, take a look.
[M-Am] Thank you. Where are you heading to today?
[F-Br] Shanghai. I’m going there for a couple of weeks on business.
The gate closes in half an hour, and I’d like to get some dutyfree shopping done before I board.
Will this take long?
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] So, we’ll finally be able to open again next week. I can’t
believe it’s taken three weeks.
[F-Cn] I know. But it all looks wonderful, doesn’t it? I think the builders
did a really good job, actually, and the layout now is much
better than it was. There’s a lot more space now. We have
three extra tables.
[M-Am] Yes, I agree. But it cost us three weeks’ earnings, and right in
the middle of the tourist season, too. I wish we had left it until
the fall now.
[F-Cn] But we couldn’t delay it. The whole place was almost falling
down and all the kitchen equipment needed replacing. Put a
notice in the local papers if you want to. I’m sure when they
see it our regular diners will come back, and when they do
they’ll love the new look.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Br] Good to see you back, Jenny. How did it go yesterday?
[F-Cn] Oh, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The morning was
OK. The sessions were all quite interesting and they covered
some new ground. And then in the afternoon we were split into
discussion groups, which was fine.
[M-Br] So, it was worth it, then. I am surprised. I remember you
weren’t looking forward to it at all before you went.
[F-Cn] No, I generally don’t like that kind of thing, but in the end
I enjoyed the day, to be honest. At least I know more than
before I went. In fact, I think you should sign up and give
it a try.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following conversation.
Questions 13 through 15 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Hello, I’d like to open an account, please.
[F-Br] Yes, certainly. We need your passport and some other form of
ID such as a driver’s license, and a recent utility bill as proof of
your address.
[M-Am] I have all of that here. And I’ve filled out this application form
already. I’m only looking for a savings account, though. Is that
all right? And I don’t need a credit card or anything.
[F-Br] Yes, of course. That’s no problem. If you just hand me those,
I’ll make some copies and we can get started.
Questions 16 through 18 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] Hello, Mr. Laine? This is Emma Anderson from Beach Tree
Lodge calling. Is this a convenient time?
[M-Au] Oh, yes. It’s about the reservations for next month, isn’t it?
I’m so sorry I haven’t gotten back to you yet. I’ve been trying
to work out the numbers. Some people haven’t replied to say
they can come yet.
[F-Am] Well, we can only hold those rooms for you for another couple
of days, I’m afraid. Otherwise you’ll have to cancel and make
another reservation, and I can’t guarantee the same rates.
[M-Au] Yes, yes. I understand. I’ll get to it right away and give you a
call back in an hour or so. Is that OK?
Questions 19 through 21 refer to the following conversation with
three speakers.
[M-Br] Did you hear the news? Derek Emerson just sent an e-mail
around to everyone saying that our travel budgets are going to
be cut… by up to 40 percent!
[F1-Am] No!
[F2-Am] Really? That’s terrible.
[F1-Am] How can he do that? First he cuts the regional sales teams
so we all have bigger territories, and now he cuts our travel
budget.
[M-Br] I know. It’s incredible. I have the entire south and east now. My
budget isn’t big enough as it is.
[F2-Am]It barely covers transportation, let alone accommodations
while I’m on the road.
[F1-Am]This is really important. We can’t do our jobs unless we’re out
there visiting customers.
[M-Br] I think I might give him a call. I doubt he knows what
consequences this will have.
Questions 22 through 24 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Au] This looks good, don’t you think, Louise? It’s the first one
we’ve done in full color, and I think the result is really worth it.
[F-Cn] Yes, it looks great. It’s a lot better than anything our
competition has, and it didn’t cost as much as we thought,
either. I’m glad we changed printers.
[M-Au] Me too. They gave us a good discount, so for 2,000 it works
out to less than a dollar each.
[F-Cn] Well, let’s hope that having a color catalog will get more
orders coming through. We really need to increase our sales
by 10 percent this season to meet our annual targets, and this
might just help us do it.
Questions 25 through 27 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] Hello. I’m sorry, but I can’t seem to find my card. It’s not in
my car or my bag. I think I may have left it somewhere here
last time I was in? Maybe in the changing room, or the gym. I
guess it was Thursday. Has anything been handed in?
[M-Cn] I’ll just check for you… No, I can’t see anything. Normally any
lost items end up behind the desk here. What’s your name?
[F-Am] Gayle Jackson. I’m a gold member. I’ve been coming here
twice a week for years. I take the aerobics class on Thursday
evenings.
[M-Cn] Yes, I know. I recognize you. Ahh. Here are your membership
details. Why don’t you go in and I’ll get another card ready for
you while you’re working out.
Questions 28 through 30 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Br] What time is the minibus to Hall 8 arriving, Sal? Do you know?
[M-Am] I have no idea. It’s supposed to be every 15 minutes, but I’ve
been here for 30 minutes and there’s no sign of it. I hope
there’ll be space for everyone. There are at least 20 of us here
now.
[F-Br] Hmm. It’s not very well organized, is it? The opening speeches
started late and went on too long, and two presentations I
wanted to go to this morning were canceled.
[M-Am] And there’s only one place to have anything to eat, which
takes ten minutes to get to. I ended up skipping lunch
altogether. I think I might have a word with the planning
committee and tell them it’s not good enough.
Questions 31 through 33 refer to the following conversation and
label.
[M-Br] Excuse me, I’m looking for a navy blue sweater. The thing is,
I have an allergy; I can’t wear man-made materials. I have
sensitive skin.
[F-Au] We have a couple of natural wool sweaters. This one in a classic
style, for instance. Would you like to try it on? I think the Large
size will fit you.
[M-Br] Oh no, that won’t do. It has to be washable, otherwise I’ll end
up spending a lot of money on cleaning.
[F-Au] I have a machine-washable wool sweater in a different design in
gray. Shall I show you that?
Questions 34 through 36 refer to the following conversation and
list.
[M-Am] Hello, I’m calling about an extra charge added to my account.
The reference number is RV1475.
[F-Cn] Let me pull up your details on my screen. Oh yes, I see. It’s a
late payment fee; you were ten days late paying last month’s
cell phone bill.
[M-Am] Yes, sorry, I forgot. Can you cancel the fee?
[F-Cn] I’m afraid those are the terms of your contract. The situation
is out of my hands now. The late fee will apply this month, but
maybe we can provide you with advice on other ways you can
pay your bill to help you manage your account, so that this
situation doesn’t happen in the future. I’ll transfer you to an
advisor, if you like.
Questions 37 through 39 refer to the following conversation and
information board.
[M-Br] Hello, I need to get to Mayfield. Which bus should I take?
[F-Cn] You need Bus Number 12. It’s only about a ten-minute ride.
There are no reports of any problems on the route this
evening. Bus number 10 normally goes there too, but it doesn’t
operate on weekends.
[M-Br] Will the driver sell me a ticket?
[F-Cn] No, you drop your coins in the farebox next to the operator.
You need the exact change, though, the farebox doesn’t take
dollar bills, only coins. And it doesn’t give change. A one-way
ticket costs $4.
[M-Br] OK, thanks for your help.
PART 4 – Short Talks
Try It Out p94 Track 90
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following telephone message.
[M-Am] Hello, Sandy, this is Chuck. I’m on my way back, but I’m
stuck in heavy traffic. I guess there’s been an accident or
something up ahead. Anyway, I’ll probably be late so can you
please cancel my four o’clock appointment with Steve Harris?
He shouldn’t mind. Just reschedule it for early next week
sometime. Also, can you send out the weekly status report?
I’ve already finished it, so just go to the Draft folder and then
forward it to everyone in the department. Thanks a lot. I’ll call
again if anything changes, but for now assume that I won’t be
back until after five. If you’ve already left, I’ll see you tomorrow.
Bye.
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following announcement and
program.
[M-Am] Thank you, Ms. Unwin, for that inspiring keynote speech.
I for one was blown away by your case studies. Now it’s
time for everyone to split into groups for the workshops and
discussions. The room numbers are listed in your program.
There is one thing I’d like to say to those planning to attend
the panel discussion. Could I ask for your patience and
request you wait outside the room for a few minutes. As you
know, the discussion will be recorded and live-streamed from
our website. The camera operators are still setting up their
equipment, but they’ll be ready shortly.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following announcement.
[M-Am] Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. This is an
announcement for passengers on Platform 11 waiting for the
6:25 service to Los Angeles. We regret to inform you that this
service is delayed due to signal failure at Glendale. Will all
passengers please stand away from the edge of the platform?
A nonstop express train is due to pass through the station
shortly. We will make another announcement in a few minutes.
Your patience is appreciated.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following speech.
[M-Au] Welcome everyone to our very first Winter Festival. I’m so
excited about this wonderful event, and to see so many
people from all over the region together here in the heart of
our great city, to celebrate the arrival of winter. As you can see,
we have a huge ice rink measuring some 900 square meters.
Think of this as the centrepiece of the festival. During the day,
I encourage everyone to try ice skating, and then at night,
see the thrilling ice shows we have scheduled, every evening
from eight ’til ten. There are lots of food stalls, so please try
to sample lots of the authentic winter dishes from all over the
world. I don’t know about you, but I could eat a horse. Oh, and
don’t forget the Tea Lodge where you can find specialty teas
and coffees. This promises to be such a wonderful event. And
now, it is my pleasure, as mayor of Brisbane, to wish you all a
wonderful Winter Festival!

Mini Test – Business Talks p99 Track 92
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following talk.
[F-Br] OK, so that’s probably all we have to cover today. I just have
one final announcement to make before we end. I’m pleased
to say we have finally ordered a new copy machine. As you
all know, the present one is rather old now, and the paper
tends to jam when doing double-sided copies. It also stops
and needs to be restarted several times a day. Anyway, those
problems will soon be over. The new one should be arriving
in a couple of weeks. It’s very sophisticated, apparently, so
they’re sending a technician over to install it and show us
how it works. Malik down in maintenance has volunteered to
get trained, so he will pass on his knowledge to each of your
teams about a week after installation. So, please tell the good
news to your teams
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following talk.
[M-Cn] And here we are at the bridge, which is basically a viewing
platform. If you all take a look out of this large window you
can see the main assembly area below. There are 500 robots
down there. This is all completely automated. Those of you
starting in the technical division might be posted here. The
panels that you saw being pressed or molded in the press
shop come here and are welded together by the robots to
create the basic body shell. So in other words, this is where
our cars actually take shape. As we continue on our tour, you
will see how these basic shells are turned into the cars our
customers buy from the showroom. As I said before, we think
it’s important to give everyone who comes to work with us an
overview of the entire process when they start, so you can see
where you all fit in. Now, let’s go through these doors and into
the paint shop.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following talk and directory.
[F-Am] Now, before we begin the day’s events, there are a few
things I need to quickly tell you about. First, Mr. Cheng’s
talk “The Tiger Economies of East Asia” will take place in
Room 34; that’s on the third floor, and not in Room 17. Also,
Mrs. Garston is running late due to the traffic, so her talk
“Investment in Europe” has been moved to eleven o’clock
rather than ten, and that’s in Room 13. Finally, for those that
want it, a small boxed lunch will be provided in the Main Hall
for just $5. If you are interested, please write your name on the
bulletin board on your way out. OK, I think that’s everything.
Thank you and enjoy the day!
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following talk.
[M-Br] And it is with great pleasure that I can now reveal the winner
of the Employee of the Season award. As you know, voting for
this has been high over the last four weeks since nominations
opened. The prize of a luxury weekend getaway by the coast
certainly seems to have generated a lot more interest than
on previous occasions. Anyway, all the votes have now been
counted, and without further ado, I can reveal the winner. A
loyal and dedicated employee of more than five years, with
almost double the number of votes of any other nominee…
congratulations, Laura Patterson from customer relations!
Mini Test – Recorded Announcements p102 Track 94
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following telephone message,
and directory.
[F-Cn] Hi, this is Sue Barker from the housekeeping department with
a message for Francis Lake. One of our cleaners has handed
in a briefcase she found under a table in the conference room.
There’s no ID inside, but I think it must have been left by the
group from India that just checked out. There is a brochure
from a company in Mumbai inside. Anyway, I think Francis
was the event organizer for that group, so maybe he can
contact them and find out where they want us to send this. I
don’t know whether to keep it here, or send it over to Event
Planning? Or maybe I should leave it at reception? Please ask
Francis to give me a call to let me know. Thanks.

[F-Am] Attention, all workers. Attention. Due to high levels of noise
in the machine room, all workers must remember to use the
earplugs provided. These can be found in the blue boxes
located at each entrance, and must be worn at all times.
Anyone in the machine room for longer than 30 minutes must

measures we have put in place to avoid hearing loss, and is a
mandatory measure for your protection. Thank you.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following announcement.

sponsoring the event, and of course, our very own official hot
dog sponsor, Cincinnati Big Dog – providers of the biggest

what promises to be not just the final game of this season,
but the best game too, against the Milwaukee Wildcats. Hurry

Mini Test – News, Weather, and Traffic Reports p111 Track 100
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following weather report.
[F-Am] I’m meteorologist Ashley Cheng with a look at storm watch…
and we have a severe weather alert for the Kansas region.
A warm front that is lifting north across the area is bringing
with it a high risk of thunderstorms to all regions except
northwestern Missouri and southeastern Nebraska. Expect
heavy rain, hail, cloud-to-ground lightning, and flash flooding.
In fact, we’ve just heard that tornado warnings have been
issued for Linn County, and we’re already getting reports of
damaged homes in eastern Kansas. People in Linn County
should take shelter now. Drivers throughout the Kansas area
are urged to take all necessary precautions, and if possible,
only make essential trips. Anyone listening to this report is
also advised to remain indoors, especially towards the late
afternoon and evening, when high winds could cause power
lines to fall. So watch out for blackouts, and stay tuned if you
can. We’ll be back with updates throughout the day.
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following radio broadcast.
[M-Am] Welcome to Our Space. I’m Kent Helsing. First up tonight, we
look at the world’s best cities to live in. Now, I’m sure most of
you know about the problems of city life: the traffic, pollution,
fear of crime, overpriced housing, stress... I could go on.
But did you know a survey by Nelson published today has
revealed the world’s best cities to live in… What are they, you
ask? Well, according to Nelson’s Judith Delea, who compiled
and reviewed the data, number one is Vienna, Austria. Zurich,
Switzerland, comes second, and Vancouver in Canada is
third. These cities were ranked according to various factors,
such as crime, healthcare, education, leisure facilities, public
transportation, that kind of thing. So tonight, I want to look
at our own city of Detroit and find out how you – the listeners
– feel about living here. Call now at 555-3458 to tell us your
views live on-air.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following news bulletin.
[F-Am] In tonight’s business news, our top story is the growth in
industrial production, which rose 2.6 percent from last month.
This latest data comes from the Global Market Statistics Office,
and is good news for manufacturers, who are still struggling
with a weak global economy that continues to threaten
exports. The monthly report, showing the first rise in six
months, has had a positive impact on the markets where bond
prices recovered slightly for the day. This provides fresh hope
ahead of next week’s gathering of world economic experts in
Washington. Indeed, some experts are saying the rise will hold
in line with increasing consumer demand towards the holiday
period at the end of the year.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following radio
announcement and program.
[M-Au] Hi. I’m Mel Bishop, and I’ll be here tomorrow night at nine to
present another edition of News and Views. We have a great
show in store for you, with Hollywood sensation Laura Kennedy,
who’ll be speaking to us about her latest movie, From Saturday
to Sunday. Also with us will be cupcake queen Wendy Chang,
named by Time magazine as one of the youngest and most
successful entrepreneurs of the twenty-first century. I’ll be
asking for her recipe on how to turn a love of baking into pure
gold, so listen up for any tips, all you would-be millionaires out
there! And last – but by no means least – is Little Mo, winner of
the latest reality TV series, who will tell us about the highs and
lows of being famous. So, that’s News and Views, tomorrow at
9 p.m. with me, Mel Bishop. Don’t miss it.
[M-Br] Hello, this is a message for Miss Clarkson. My name is Bill
Shannon, and I’m calling from customer service at Eastern
Travel Group. I’m replying to a letter you recently sent about a
problem you had with our service from Cambridge to London.
I understand that a delay on the 9:20 service from Cambridge
on Friday the 27th caused you to arrive late for a job interview.
Obviously, we are very sorry about that, and please accept
our apologies. The track between Cambridge and London is
currently undergoing a £10 million upgrade, and this has led
to delays on certain services. We’ve been warning passengers
of likely delays while this work continues, and in fact there
are posters at every station about work on the line. We don’t
therefore feel we can be held responsible for the fact you
missed your interview. I hope that answers your query, but if
you want to discuss this further then please call me. My direct
line is 01207-3440904. OK? Bye.
Practice 2 Track 102
[F-Am] And now let’s have the latest business news. First up,
coffee chain Benny’s has announced a huge expansion of
its operations here in the US, creating 3,000 jobs over the
next five years. The company plans to build around 200
drive-through outlets, set to be located on major highways
throughout the country, in addition to opening another
120 stores in major cities. At a time when many servicesector companies have been reporting
record losses, this
surprising news has been universally welcomed by industry
commentators. Gerald Maguire, president of Benny’s, said
the move shows the coffee giant’s commitment to its US
operations, adding that as most of the chain’s staff are under
25 years old, the expansion would particularly benefit young
people looking for work.
Practice 3 Track 103
[M-Br] Hello, I’d like someone to call me back. My name is
Arthur Londale. There are some changes in my medical
circumstances, and I’m concerned they might affect my
holiday insurance policy. I have travel cover with your
company. The thing is, I was involved in a car accident
recently and will be taking medication over the next few
months. Obviously, I don’t want to risk invalidating my policy.
I’ve been a customer of yours for over 15 years and don’t
really want to change my insurer.
Practice 4 Track 104
[F-Cn] We have some great deals in our computer department at the
moment. As part of our summer promotion, we’re offering
interest-free credit on all computers and laptops over $600.
And for today only we’re offering an extra 15% discount on
top! But hurry, this offer ends this evening. Every computer
comes with a 12-month warranty, and, as always, we’re
offering free local delivery. And don’t forget the data! Should
you back up your data every day? You bet! Check out our
data storage devices and cloud computing applications.
Buy an internal hard drive and receive a high-capacity USB
flash drive memory stick absolutely free. Visit the computer
department on the fourth floor.
Practice 5 Track 105
[F-Am] OK, we’re all here now so let’s get started. First I’d like to
thank everyone for coming. This is the first of five Internet
Marketing workshops we have for you in September, and
since you’re all here early and registered already, I can tell
that everyone is very enthusiastic. Before we begin, I must ask
that anyone who has parked just outside the main entrance in
the zone marked in blue, please move their cars to the area
behind the building. A couple of buses are expected to arrive
mid-morning and they will need those spaces. Also, please
remember that while you can leave your bags and coats
on the table at the back of the room, you should keep any
valuables with you, especially during any breaks, because the
staff here can’t be responsible for anything that goes missing.
Now, could you all please check that your cell phones are
turned off, and then we’ll introduce ourselves.
Review Test p120 Track 106
Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following announcement.
[M-Au] And finally, everyone please remember that starting next week
will be the New York Summer Play Festival, featuring highly
original and innovative work by new writers, all staged at the
Public Theater. This year there are no fewer than 20 writers
with over 130 public performances scheduled. This is a great
opportunity for you to see the very best in new theater, and in
fact it is a course requirement to go along to at least one show
over the four-week festival. Extra credit will be given to those of
you writing a review of a play you’ve seen. Tickets are $15, but
the college has a subsidy for this, so you can get your tickets
for just $10 from the campus office. Be quick – they’re selling
out fast! No more than five tickets per person. Thank you.
Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following announcement.
[M-Br] Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard this 15:25 express
service to London Euston. We will be calling at Stevenage,
Crawley, and Hatfield with an estimated arrival time into London
Euston at 17:15. Passengers for St. Albans should change
at Hatfield. These passengers please note that due to track
maintenance, the remainder of your trip to St. Albans will be
by bus. When you exit the station, a replacement bus will be
waiting for you. All passengers please be advised that the
dining car is located at the rear of the train, selling a selection of
hot and cold beverages, sandwiches, and snacks. Thank you.
Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following recorded message.
[F-Am] Thank you for calling Thomson Matthews, the nation’s
number-one choice for property services. If you’re looking
to buy or rent, or if you want to sell or lease your property,
you’ve come to the right place. A member of our awardwinning customer services team will be
with you shortly.
You may find answers to many of your questions online at
www.thomsonmatthews.com, so why not log on to find your
local branch or arrange an appointment? Alternatively, if
your inquiry is urgent and you wish to speak to someone
immediately, please continue to hold and we will answer your
call as soon as we can.
Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following short talk.
[M-Am] Here’s a plan showing the galleries and the main exhibits. If
you don’t have much time, you might be interested in our Top
20 tour. The next one starts in ten minutes over there by the
statue, just inside the main entrance. You’ll get to see the most
famous paintings we have here, so it’s a great way to make
the most of your time. You’ll finish in the shop over there,
which has some good souvenirs and postcards. The tour lasts
about 90 minutes, all the guides are fully trained, and tickets
are just $6. So, would you like to go ahead and book that?
Questions 13 through 15 refer to the following report.
[M-Am] Hello, folks. This is Jeff Limberg reporting to you from Radio
247’s very own Eye in the Sky. Well, from up here it looks as
if we’re sure to have yet another hot and humid day here in
the Sunshine State of Florida. Temperatures are set to reach
the mid-90s from Miami right over into the Florida Keys, so
folks, expect things to get pretty sticky. Traffic-wise, in Miami
we have a collision on Interstate 95 southbound, at Northwest
69th Street. From here I can see the left lane is completely
blocked at this time, with a backup almost three miles long.
We’re also getting reports of a three-car pileup causing delays
on the Palmetto Expressway, although I am relieved to report
no injuries at either incident. Elsewhere, traffic is flowing
normally through the city. Now, back to Ava in the studio.
Questions 16 through 18 refer to the following advertisement.
[F-Au] The next time you come to Hong Kong, stay at the Star Hotel
Kowloon – the latest addition to the Star Hotel chain of luxury
hotels throughout the Asia Pacific region. Enjoy fine dining
at our five-star restaurant, The Jade Fountain, with superb
views over Hong Kong’s iconic harbor. After a tough day of
meetings, take time to relax in the hotel’s very own health club
and spa. Membership is included in your room rate. Use the
facilities in our state-of-the-art Business Center free of charge,
and make use of the complimentary wireless internet access,
available in all public areas, to keep in touch with the office.
Come to the Star Hotel Kowloon, where you’ll find a warm
welcome, superb service, and excellent corporate rates.
Questions 19 through 21 refer to the following speech.
[M-Am] Thank you for inviting me here to talk about eco-homes of
the future. It is indeed an honor to be speaking to so many
distinguished experts in energy conservation. The issue of
sustainable development is one that has grown in importance
in recent years, and will continue to dominate building
regulations and planning committees for years to come. We
all want to reduce carbon emissions, cut pollution and waste,
and create environmentally efficient homes for the future. The
question, of course, is, How best can we achieve this? In my
talk tonight, I want to share with you the results of a five-year
study into this key issue, and highlight some ways in which
we can make the goal of low-energy housing and ecologically
friendly living a reality. These are the findings I intend to
present to the Secretary of Energy next week when I go to
discuss the government’s position on all of this.
Questions 22 through 24 refer to the following report.
[M-Am] Here at Consumer Watch we’ve just come to the end of a sixmonth study that has
revealed that not all bargains are what
they seem. We monitored prices at the Big Five supermarkets,
and discovered many cases where “bargain” items were
in fact no cheaper, and in some cases were actually more
expensive, than they used to be! We found butter advertised
as “bigger pack, better value” that was 20 percent more
expensive than regular packs, and “two-for-one” offers that
sometimes cost 25 percent more than buying two items at the
regular price. We recorded a well-known brand of pizza that
rose in price for a month, and then dropped back to more than
the original price with signs saying “Special offer” prominently
displayed. What’s so special about that? We believe that these
empty promises of “huge savings” could be in breach of
federal regulations, and will send our findings to the Federal
Trade Commission. We’ll keep you posted.
Questions 25 through 27 refer to the following announcement and
information.
[M-Au] Your attention, please. This is an important announcement for
passengers traveling on Flight MelbanAir 952, final destination
Sydney, via Bangkok. We’re sorry, but this flight has been
delayed by approximately sixty minutes due to the late arrival
of the incoming aircraft. Would all passengers please wait in
the departure hall and check the flight information monitors
regularly for the gate number and revised boarding time?
These will be confirmed shortly. If you have any questions
about this flight, please visit the MelbanAir service counter in
the center of the departure hall.
Questions 32 through 34 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Do you know when the painters are going to finish the lobby?
The group from Far Eastern Finance are arriving next Monday.
It’s their first visit, so we need to make sure they get a good
impression of the place.
[F-Au] Well, the last time I asked, the plan was to be done by
Thursday afternoon. Do you want me to check? I have a
progress meeting with Tony Wagner later.
[M-Am] Yes, please. Tell him to make sure they finish no later than
Friday evening. We can always put all the furniture back on
Sunday if we have to.
Questions 35 through 37 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Br] Larry, I applied for that position you mentioned last week, the
one in the research department. I have an interview at ten
tomorrow, so wish me luck.
[M-Cn] You bet. When do you hear back?
[F-Br] Next week. I don’t think I’ll get it, though. The description said
they want someone with a master’s degree and I don’t have
one.
[M-Cn] Hmm. But you have a lot of valuable experience. You’ve
worked here for five years, and you know the place inside
out. I think that counts for more than a master’s degree from
someone else who’s been here only a few months.
Questions 38 through 40 refer to the following conversation.
Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Cn] Good morning. I’m interested in a treadmill and an exercise
bike. Can you give me some prices, please?
[M-Br] Of course. The most popular package we have is a treadmill,
bike, and a rowing machine for £35 a week, including free
delivery and service plan.
[F-Cn] Oh, OK. That’s a lot more than I was expecting, actually. It’s
cheaper to join a gym on a monthly membership.
[M-Br] But will you go? Most of our customers find they use the
machines a lot more if they’re in their own homes, rather than
if they had to go to a gym. Anyway, let’s take a closer look and
see if we can find something more suitable for you. Can I take
some contact information first?
[F-Br] So, how was the exhibition over the weekend, Henry?
[M-Au] It was good, thanks. Hundreds of companies were there. I met
up with a few people I know, and made some new contacts.
Oh, and I think I might have found where we can get all
our advertising flyers printed. There’s a place in India that’s
around 30 percent cheaper than the one we’re using now, and
that includes the shipping costs.
[F-Br] Wow. So it was worth it.
[M-Au] Yes, but with the flight, the hotel, and everything it wasn’t
cheap. I don’t know if I’ll be going back for a while.
Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Cn] What’s the matter, Sandra? Are you OK?
[F-Am] Yes, but I have to mark 30 midterm exams for my students
before Wednesday. I have no idea how I’ll get all of them
done.
[M-Cn] Well, there’s a faculty meeting this afternoon. You should be
able to do some then.
[F-Am] I sure hope so. I’ll sit at the back and hope nobody notices
me. I need all the time I can get.
Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Au] Thank you for calling Jackson’s, the number-one choice for
all your building needs. This is Tina speaking. How may I help
you?
[M-Am] I need a Vespa bathroom suite and some wall tiles. I have the
product numbers from your catalog, but can I check first how
soon you can have this order ready?
[F-Au] If we have them in stock at your local store, you can pick them
up right away. If we need to get them from the distribution
center, we guarantee 24 hours, so they’d be ready for you
tomorrow afternoon after 2 p.m.
Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation
between three speakers.
[M-Br] This is our most popular model. It’s leather, fully adjustable so
the seat can move up and down like this, and the back also
tilts.
[F-Am1] Oh, that’s good.
[F-Am2] Yes, isn’t it? Are the arm rests adjustable, too?
[M-Br] They certainly are. Just lift each arm here. See? It’s very
comfortable, especially if you’re sitting at your desk all day.
[F-Am1] Yes, it looks good. What colors does it come in?
[M-Br] Black and light brown. Black’s the most popular. In fact, if you
order today, I can give you 20 percent off the black model. But
not the brown, I’m afraid. I think there’s a two-week wait for
them anyway.
[F-Am2] Oh no. I wanted it in brown. Just my luck!
[F-Am1] Don’t worry Susan. At least it’ll be cheaper.
Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] Well, there’s nothing wrong that I can see. The X-rays were fine
and there’s no sign of any gum disease or decay. You seem to
have looked after them pretty well.
[M-Am] That’s a relief. So I don’t need any fillings?
[F-Am] No, but they could use a polish. We also offer a whitening
service if you’d like to brighten up your smile a little. It wouldn’t
do any harm.
[M-Am] OK, that sounds like a very sensible plan. I’ll certainly give it
some thought. Thanks a lot.
Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation
and product information.
[F-Au] I’m looking for an electric tea kettle. It’s for a teachers’ lounge
where about twenty of us want a drink all at the same time.
[M-Au] Wow! That’s a lot of tea and coffee!
[F-Au] Yes, and we only have a short break between lessons, so we
need something that’s quick.
[M-Au] I can imagine! No-one likes waiting. Our biggest kettles have
a two-liter capacity, but they take much longer to boil than the
smaller kettles. The Whizzo takes about 6 minutes, whereas
the Espresso and the Kitchen Queen take half that. I think you
should opt for the cordless one. It’s more convenient.
[F-Au] Thanks. I’ll take your advice.
Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation
and list.
[F-Au] Hello again. Were the red roses a success?
[M-Cn] Yes, thanks, my wife loved them. Today I’m looking for
something for my grandmother. It’s her birthday next week,
but unfortunately I’ll be away on business on the day.
[F-Au] What did you have in mind?
[M-Cn] Something fragrant, I think.
[F-Au] Good idea. Summer Splendor looks pretty, but it’s not
perfumed. So we have Heaven Scent, and Scents and
Sensibility… they both smell divine, but I must warn you, lilies
can stain clothes and fabric. I’d suggest sweet peas, roses
and violets; they’re safer.
[M-Cn] Sounds good! Let’s go with that.
[F-Au] OK. We’ll deliver, so please write the address on this form.
Here you are. Oh, and we’ll gift-wrap it, too, so I’ll go and get
you some cards to choose from. OK?
Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation
and advertisement.
[F-Br] Hello, I came across an advertisement of yours in a
newspaper at my doctor’s surgery.
[M-Br] Oh yes.
[F-Br] It’s a few weeks old though. I was just wondering…. do you
still have the Manola B470 scanner on sale?
[M-Br] Yes, we do.
[F-Br] And is it still the same price - £79.99?
[M-Br] Yes, that’s right. We haven’t changed any of the terms. Oh
hang on! Now I think about it, yes, there is one change…
but it’s an improvement, actually! Since last week we now
promise to get all orders to you within forty-eight hours from
the time you order.
[F-Br] Oh! That’s good.

[M-Br] Now, before we all leave, I have one final announcement to
make. Doris, who has worked tirelessly as my assistant for
the last 15 years, will soon be leaving us. She told me last
week she wants to emigrate in the New Year to Australia with
her husband Robert. They both intend to retire early to be
with their son and grandchildren, who live out there in Perth.
She’s done a fantastic job, and naturally I’ll be very sorry to
see her go. I’m preparing a surprise for her, so please allow an
extra 20 minutes after next month’s board meeting for a small
presentation ceremony. There’ll be drinks and snacks, and
we’ll be giving her and her husband first-class tickets to Perth
as a token of our appreciation for all she has done over the
years.

Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following talk.
[M-Au] And so moving on to emerging investment opportunities,
this slide shows what some of you may recognize as a field
of bamboo. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants
on the planet. Whereas a hardwood tree takes decades to
grow, a 20-meter bamboo can replace itself in just 50 days.
Cut it down and it grows right back, at incredible speed. In
fact, some experts say you can get one kilometer of usable
bamboo pole from a single stem… every year. And what is it
used for? Well, bamboo is stronger than most steel, and that’s
why you’ll find bamboo farms supplying the construction
industry in many parts of the world with scaffolding, flooring,
and house-building materials. It’s also used in paper
manufacturing, furniture, food, fuel, and medicine – even
clothing! Bamboo is a cheap, green, easily renewable and
versatile resource that’s becoming increasingly popular. It’s
not just for pandas! In fact, the world market for bamboo has
been estimated at $20 billion.

[F-Cn] Welcome everyone to Dale Valley Cheese. In a moment,
we’ll start with a short video that gives you a brief overview
of our 100-year history here as Wisconsin’s premier cheese
manufacturer. Then we’ll head into the factory and you’ll
be able to see every stage of the cheese-making process,
starting with the vats where the milk is heated and stirred,
right through to finally where the cheese is packed. Then Gary
Jenkins, our master cheesemaker, will talk to you about some
of the ten specialty cheeses he has created, and what goes
into them to give them their distinctive flavors. Finally, we’ll end
in the cheese and gift shop, where you can taste free samples
and buy gifts to take home. The tour lasts an hour. Please
don’t wander off, in case you get lost and we can’t find you.

[M-Am] And in our final piece of news tonight, NSK International has
once again topped the corporate charts, this time receiving
first prize in a survey conducted by Business Monthly. The
online survey, which is carried out every year, asks employees
from over 500 companies to rank their employer across a
range of categories. The title of “Best Employer” was awarded
to the media giant in part on the basis of its generous pension
plan and extensive childcare program. Results showed
that 93 percent of respondents from NSK International said
they felt both valued and well rewarded. Business Monthly’s
chief executive, Naomi Eastment, presided over the awards
ceremony at the Grand Palace Hotel in New York last night.
This is NSK’s second major award this year, having been
voted “Best Investment Team” by Money magazine just two
weeks ago.

[M-Am] Strike action has been announced today by members of the
Transportation Workers Union, who are apparently unhappy
at the latest pay offer from the Metropolitan Transportation

a majority of 12 to 1 in a vote late last night. Union leaders
have called for a 24-hour walkout as of midnight tonight, and
warned that more strike actions may be announced next
week. MTA officials confirm the action will disrupt services
throughout the New York metropolitan area, with all bus and
subway routes affected. With the prospect of traffic chaos for
millions of commuters, the word is walk or bike to work if you

[M-Am] Hello, Sandy. It’s Robert Jackson here from corporate

18. [M-Au] The password has to include numbers as well as letters.
[F-Cn] (A) Yes, there’s always a lot of correspondence.

Part 3 p334 Track 134
Questions 32 through 34 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Apart from basic qualifications, what do you think we should
we be looking for in candidates for these new front-of-house
positions?
[F-Am] The qualifications are hardly basic. They need a two-year
college diploma, at least, plus experience in a similar position,
preferably in hospitality and ideally in another hotel group.
[M-Am] Yes, and we need people who can work well under pressure,
either on their own or as part of a team. They should be
computer-literate, too… to handle the bookings system.
[F-Am] That’s right. Perhaps they might even have a language or two,
to help communicate with non-English-speaking guests. OK,
I’ll talk to Winston and draw up an ad for the newspaper. I’ll let
you see it in case you want to add something else.
Questions 35 through 37 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] We’re having some difficulties with the number 3 machine. It’s
not cutting properly. Those machines haven’t been serviced
for some time, if I remember right. When are they due for their
next regular servicing?
[M-Cn] Let me just check my records. Umm... during week 29. That’s
towards the end of this month.
[F-Am] Well, we can’t wait that long. Call maintenance and see if they
can send someone over.
[M-Cn] I’ll try, but they usually require a week’s notice.
Questions 38 through 40 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Br] This evening we have to cater two receptions, one for 67
people in the banquet room and a smaller one for 38, which
will be on the terrace. The first one is a formal sit- down
affair. It’s supposed to start at 7:30, but we’re unlikely to have
everyone seated before 8. The other one starts at 8:30.
[F-Au] If that one’s on the terrace, I assume it’s a buffet, which means
we won’t need so many staff, but everything has to be laid out
in advance.
[M-Br] Yes. I think we’ll need nine waiters inside and five outside.
We have our ten regulars, so we’re four short. I’ll contact the
agency now and let them know.
[F-Au] OK. So if you do that and take charge of the buffet, I’ll look
after the dinner. That’s fair, isn’t it?
Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Cn] I understand that you’re looking to rent a house in this area.
[M-Am] Buy or rent – we’re not sure yet. My company’s sent me here,
initially for four years. Then we’ll see. There are five of us – me,
my wife, and three children – so we’ll need four bedrooms.
The place must have a yard, preferably a large one that gets
plenty of sun.
[F-Cn] Well, we have three properties that you might be interested in.
One with five bedrooms and two with four. They’re in different
neighborhoods, but the larger one downtown you really
should see right away. It’s in a great location. Would you like
me to arrange a visit for this afternoon?
[M-Am] Yes, thanks. And my wife will be joining me tomorrow, so
could we schedule a time to see the other two then?
Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Au] Winnie, Mr. Garcia is coming in next week from Mexico City
and he wants me to take him out sightseeing. I was thinking of
the theater, too, but I don’t know what’s onstage. You go to a
lot of plays, don’t you?
[F-Am] Well, yes. There are lots to choose from at the moment, but
taste varies a lot. Do you know what kind of thing he likes?
[M-Au] I have no idea. He’s our best customer, but I never met him
before. What’s the most popular one out right now?
[F-Am] Salad Days, at the National. It has very good reviews. I can
give the box office a call now and try to get tickets, if you
want… but it’s a bit late.
Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Au] In your talk you suggested that the recent collapse in bee
populations is a result of cell-phone use, but isn’t industrial
farming the most likely cause?
[M-Cn] Until recently, the chemicals used in agriculture were seen
by many as the main suspects. However, we can’t ignore the
results of this new study. It seems to show that the frequencies
that cell phones use may interfere with the communication
between bees, causing them to stop collecting pollen.
[F-Au] Could it be that herbicides are no longer in the spotlight
because the companies behind these products have spent
millions to persuade the public that they have no negative side
effects?
[M-Cn] I suppose that’s a possibility, but I think we need to investigate
these new results a little more before we make up our minds.

Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] We need the sales catalogs by the end of the month at the
latest. It’s April already and the Singapore Trade Fair is the
first weekend in May. We always give away lots there. How far
along are we with the design?
[M-Am] Well, we used the same photographer as last year, but we
didn’t want to use last year’s photos, because we have so
many new products now. Everything has been checked by the
publicity department. The colors are wonderful.
[F-Am] And what about layout and production?
[M-Am] There’s already a beta version for the website up and running,
but the print catalog we outsourced to Bluenote Digital.
They’ve promised a mock-up design for next week.
Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Br] I usually have a sandwich at work, so I only ate here a couple
of times before. At least the place is close by, and it’s not too
expensive, is it? How hungry are you?
[F-Am] Not hungry enough to eat all that! Just look at the size of those
dishes. I can’t believe they get so much food on one plate.
[M-Br] Oh, they’re generous all right. You can have a half portion
if you want, but they cost more than half price. See? This
vegetable pizza is $16, or it’s $10 for a small one.
[F-Am] Hmm. I think I’ll have a half portion, and then a dessert later. I
can see some great cakes over there by the counter.
Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Cn] Don’t you have your annual checkup this week with Dr.
Harrison?
[F-Br] It’s on Thursday. I’m not sure I’m going to bother going,
though. I have to hand in my financial report by Friday and I’ve
hardly started it.
[M-Cn] But I thought you said you weren’t feeling so well lately. What
about those headaches you’ve been having? I think you
should go.
[F-Br] Maybe, but the appointment’s at three so if I’m pressed for
time I’ll just have to reschedule. I can’t lose a whole afternoon.
That report won’t write itself, you know!
Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation
between three speakers.
[F-Am1] It’ll be good when we move offices in July.
[F-Am2] Yes, won’t it? I heard that the new place is much bigger.
[M-Au] And there’s lots of natural light, apparently.
[F-Am2] Good. It’ll be nice not to have to work in artificial light all the
time.
[F-Am1] I guess we’ll be getting new workstations, as well.
[M-Au] That’s what they said at the meeting. I wouldn’t mind a bigger
computer screen, to be honest.
[F-Am2] Me too! These are far too small.
[M-Au] And a new chair, come to think of it. This one isn’t adjustable
anymore so I have to lean forward all the time. It hurts my
back after a few hours. I’ve been meaning to call them about
it, actually.
Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation and
class schedule.
[F-Am] I could prescribe more medication, but I really think your
health problems are mostly lifestyle-related. Doing more
exercise would be more useful to you than pills. We have
classes here at the center; I suggest you sign up.
[M-Au] Mmm, but I don’t have a lot of free time. I’m a student and
have classes till 5 p.m. most days.
[F-Am] We have classes in the evening as well.
[M-Au] OK, I’ll give it a try. But I’ll be away on vacation next week.
[F-Am] No problem, you can start any time. Just book your place
online. But don’t join the advanced class — not yet, anyway.
You’ll find this brochure helpful; it gives more details.
Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation
and list.
[M-Am] So, you’re on the morning flight to Paris, and then there’s a
two-hour wait at Paris airport before your flight to Barcelona.
I’m sorry it’s not a direct flight, but there was nothing else at
this late stage.
[F-Br] I know. It can’t be helped; it’s such short notice, so what can I
expect? Any luck with the hotel?
[M-Am] Again, there’s not much available. There’s a luxury hotel very
near the cathedral — a great location, four star, but quite
expensive — €300 a night. You said a maximum of €200,
didn’t you? Would you consider a three-star hotel?
[F-Br] No, I don’t think so. I mean, not if I can find a four-star one for
less than €200.
[M-Am] Oh, that shouldn’t be a problem… but you’ll need to stay a
little further out from the center.
Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation and
map.
[M-Cn] There’s an interesting piece in this month’s “Store
Management News.”
[F-Am] Oh yeah?
[M-Cn] It’s about the relationship between store layout and sales. I’ll
photocopy it for you, if you want.
[F-Am] Sounds interesting, especially if it could increase sales!
[M-Cn] The article got me thinking. Maybe we should change our
layout. We could move the umbrellas from the back of
the store near the escalator to the front, next to the store
entrance. Then, on a rainy day people would be able to see
the umbrellas from the street.
[F-Am] Oh, and make an impulse purchase, you mean? Good idea.
Say, that reminds me … I must go and order some more
umbrellas. According to the weather forecast, we’ll be needing
them by the weekend.

[M-Am] OK, let’s start. I’ve called all of you here as department
heads because there’s an initiative which, I hope, will involve
everyone, and I need your help to publicize it. The main office
says we need to cut costs by 30 percent this year, which
means finding a lot of savings from somewhere. One of the
things I think we can do is to ask for suggestions from the
workforce on how we can save money. I want all of you to
encourage the people on your teams to think hard and try
to come up with ideas that either boost efficiency or reduce
our costs. Tell them there will be a suggestions box near the
elevator on each floor, together with forms to fill out. They
should post their ideas in one of the boxes. They can do so
anonymously if they wish, but we are offering cash prizes of
$250 for the three best ideas, so they need to include their
names if they want a chance of winning a prize. The closing
date will be the end of the month.
Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following report.
[M-Au] TAP Industries, based in Thailand, is apparently in merger
talks with the Korean electronics giant LithCorp. TAP’s C.E.O.,
accompanied by senior executives, flew to the Korean capital
yesterday for meetings with LithCorp representatives. After
the meetings, Sangwan Boonmee, TAP’s C.E.O., refused
to comment, but subsequently there was a joint press
release from the two companies maintaining that the talks
had been positive and fruitful. In the evening, the LithCorp
communications director, Patrick Kwon, appeared on local
television and claimed that the talks had explored greater
cooperation between the companies. Business analysts say
that TAP Industries has for some time been looking to take
over an electronics-components company, to ensure supplies
for its domestic appliance factories in China and Vietnam. The
latest news led to a 6 percent hike in LithCorp’s shares.
Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following talk.
[M-Br] Welcome to Vienna, everyone. Here we are, standing in the
capital of Austria, in what is surely one of the most magnificent
cities in the world. Home of Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, and
many other composers, Vienna is a city of music and culture
with glorious palaces and beautiful buildings everywhere you
turn. In front of you is the splendid Hofburg Palace, or Imperial
Palace as it is also known. This is where the Hapsburg family,
one-time rulers of Europe, stayed more than 600 years ago.
Today, the magnificent palace is the official residence of the
President of Austria, and also the National Library of Vienna,
the National Theater, the famous Spanish Riding School, the
Royal Chapel, and numerous museums and other attractions.
This three-hour private tour will take you to two of the main
attractions, the SiSi Museum and the Imperial Apartments.
Entry is included in your tour tickets. After that, you will be
free to walk around and explore on your own until five o’clock
when the bus will collect you from where you are standing
now. Please, don’t get lost. OK, so everyone follow me now,
please.
Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following talk.
[F-Am] Welcome to the afternoon session of our business conference.
This session will consist of four presentations. The first is a
plenary session here in the main hall with Dr. Mary Butler
of Ohio State University. Her talk is entitled “Changes in
Corporate Tax Legislation.” This will be followed at 2:30 by two
parallel sessions. In Room B computer consultant Dwayne
Hodges will talk about “Focusing on Clients as Individuals.”
In Room C lawyer Dorothy Sterling will look at “Company
Rights and Obligations.” As is made clear in the program,
this session is intended for people with legal training. The
last contribution, which will again be in this hall, will be from
Brendan W. Hughes, who will propose an answer to the
question “Is viral marketing ethical?”
Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following telephone message.
[M-Cn] Hi, Neil. It’s Kieran here. You e-mailed to ask how the project
for the new design of climbing boot is shaping up. I just
thought I’d call and update you. The X-ray shots of feet in
various climbing positions have all been done in the test labs.
We also carried out tests on all different materials for the
soles and the uppers, using our existing climbing boot range
and competitors’ models. Results should be back on those
next week. And last month I e-mailed questionnaires to over
300 climbers around the world, and so far we have around
150 replies, which is a good response. That’s about it. Oh, I
almost forgot… and next week, on March 15 I think it is, I’ll
be interviewing 12 professional climbers and asking them for
endorsements. So, if all goes well, I should be able to get the
final report to you by the 31st. Hope that’s OK with you and
the production team. Bye.
Questions 95 through 97 refer to the following announcement and
program schedule.
[M-Am] A reminder to listeners that there will be changes to our
regular evening programming next Sunday. This is due to a
live broadcast from the Annual Country Music Awards. You
won’t be able to hear Sports Round-up, our regular recap of
weekend sports. Our arts program, Box Office, will also not air
next Sunday evening. You can still listen to our other Sunday
programs, but at a later time. What’s in the Sunday Papers will
now start at nine. Newland Now and Then and Newsdesk will
also start thirty minutes later than currently scheduled. See
our website to keep up to date with all the news from Newland
Local Radio.
Questions 98 through 100 refer to the following talk and chart.
[F-Br] Before I announce the winner of this month’s “Employee of
the month” award, let’s take a look at the sales results for
our summer season. Here’s the slide now. Yes… I see you
all feel as amazed as me. What about that? The figures are
the exact opposite of what we would normally expect to see
over this quarter. Who would have thought that we would sell
more wool sweaters and warm clothing than swimwear in the
summer? I think we can all feel for Sally and the staff in her
department. Don’t worry, Sally; we can’t control the weather.
Anyway, our overall sales revenue across the store was up on
last year, so we can’t complain.

Part 3 p374 Track 138
[M-Au] Hey, Jen. Did you know the freeway’s completely closed right
now? I just caught a news flash on the local radio station. I
think they said a truck caught fire in the Newport tunnel, or
something.
[F-Am] Oh no, that’s on my way home. The last time there was a
problem in the tunnel it was closed for hours, and I didn’t get
back home until almost midnight. It’s my Spanish class this
evening and I don’t want to miss that.
[M-Au] Hmm. Well, why don’t you stop for the day and head back
now? If you’re quick, you might be there in time.
[F-Am] Good idea. This report can wait until tomorrow.
Questions 38 through 40 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] Hello there. Can I help you at all?
[F-Cn] Hi. Yes, I’m looking for a case for my tablet PC. I need
something that’ll protect it when I’m carrying it around, so it
needs to be pretty robust, if you know what I mean. But I don’t
want one that’s too heavy. That’s probably the most important.
Do you have anything in stock?
[M-Am] I think we might have something suitable. I’m not completely
sure because I don’t work in this department, but if you just
wait a minute, I’ll go find my colleague, who’ll be able to assist
you.
Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.
[M-Am] This is the 2:05 to Denver, folks. Anyone for Denver, step this
way please. Sure don’t want to leave without you! Just you,
ma’am? OK, put your bags by the bus and I’ll get them loaded
in just a minute. Can I have your ticket, please?
[F-Am] Here you are. A round-trip to Denver. What time do we get
there?
[M-Am] We should arrive at 7:35 if everything goes well. It’s usually
about a 5½-hour ride from here. But if the traffic is bad it might
be later.
[F-Am] Yes, I see. Can you please be careful with my bag? There are
some fragile things in there I don’t want to break. Thanks a lot.
Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Br] Hello, reception? This is Mandy Inez in room 10-04. I need to
do some work on my laptop. Could you tell me how I can get
internet access? I can’t seem to connect from here.
[M-Cn] Yes, of course, ma’am. There is a high-speed internet
connection in your room, but it costs ten dollars per day. You
need to pay first. Would you like me to charge that to your
credit card?
[F-Br] Ten dollars! But I only need it for about half an hour. That’s far
too much. Isn’t there anywhere in the hotel where I can get
free internet access?
[M-Cn] We have a business center in the upper lobby. That’s open
24 hours. There are two computers with free internet access
there. But I should tell you that it does tend to be very popular,
so you might have to wait awhile before a computer becomes
free.
Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Cn] Hi, I’m wondering if you had a chance to look at my car yet.
I brought it in for a service this morning. The name’s Elliot.
[M-Au] Elliot. Let me see. Yes, there’s a note here. Unfortunately, it
looks like there’s a problem with your brakes. The disks are
worn right down so they need to be replaced. Is that OK?
[F-Cn] Well, I guess so. Can you tell me how much it will cost?
I mean, I don’t want to spend any more money on it than
I have to, really.
[M-Au] I don’t do the bills. You’ll need to speak with Mike. He’s with
a customer at the moment, but I’ll ask him to give you a call
before we go any further. We’ve got your contact number.
Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] I don’t think I’ve seen you around before, have I? Are you
new?
[M-Br] Yes, I am. I only started Monday. I haven’t worked in such a
big organization before, and I’m finding it a little confusing, to
be honest. I mean, the building is so huge, you need a map to
find your way around. I can’t even figure out which elevator to
use!
[F-Am] I remember it took me a while to settle in. But it’s not a bad
place to work once you get used to it. The people are great.
Look, there’s a few of us who usually meet in the cafeteria at
lunchtime. Why don’t you join us there around one and I’ll
introduce you? I’m sure you’ll make friends soon.
Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] Glendale Leisure and Learning Center. Can I help you?
[M-Am] Yes, I’m interested in the Relaxation course you’re running. It’s
on a Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00, starting next week. I just saw it
in your brochure. I know it’s last minute, but I wondered if you
still had any openings left.
[F-Am] Relaxation, Relaxation…. let me just find it in our system. So
next week starts Monday, May 20… Yes, you’re right. There it
is. Relaxation, starting on the 21st. It’s in Room 5 with Julia.
There are two spots left, actually, which is quite unusual
because it’s one of our most popular courses. You’re in luck. If
you’re interested, I can book it now for you. The fee is $50 for
six classes.
Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation with
three speakers.
[M-Br] Hello, can I help you?
[F1-Am] Yes, thanks. We’re looking for a flight to Las Vegas. A friend
of ours is getting married and she’s having her bridal shower
there.
[M-Br] I see. That sounds fun. What date do you need to be there?
[F2-Am] The party’s on Saturday 27th but we’re going to go a few
days before and make a vacation out of it.
[M-Br] Why not?
[F2-Am] Exactly!
[M-Br] So, later this month... mid-week flights are generally cheaper.
How about leaving on the 23rd and returning, say, on the
30th?
[F1-Am] That sounds fine.
[F2-Am] Let’s do it!

Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.
[F-Am] Hello, I’m calling from Complete Logistics Incorporated. We
have a consignment for a Mark Yao. I’ve called his direct line
many times but there’s never any reply. I guess he’s been
away. Anyhow, could you connect me with Mr. Yao, please? I
need to arrange a time for delivery.
[M-Cn] I’m afraid Mr. Yao is no longer with the company.
[F-Am] What? He’s left?
[M-Cn] I’m afraid so. His replacement is John Whitehouse, but Mr.
Whitehouse is in a meeting right now, and I’m not sure when
he’ll be free. Would you like to leave a message?
[F-Am] Yes, could you ask him to get back to us urgently? Complete
Logistics. Please tell him that if we don’t hear from him in
the next 24 hours the goods will have to be returned to the
original supplier.
[M-Cn] OK. I’ll make sure he gets that.
[M-Am] Just one ticket, please. Here you are. That’s a $20 dollar bill.
Will you accept this card as ID?
[F-Am] Sure. That’s fine. And here’s your change, two dollars.
Anything else I can help you with?
[M-Am] I’m interested in visiting the French Flower Painting exhibition.
Which floor is that?
[F-Am] The second floor; go through the double doors to get to the
elevator, or you can take the stairs over there. Here’s a plan of
the building.
[M-Am] Do you have anything that describes the collections in more
detail?
[F-Am] There are books and guides in the shop over by the stairs.
[M-Am] Thanks. I’ll go and buy one now, and read it over a coffee. You
have a café, I assume.
[F-Am] Yes, in the basement. The restrooms are there, too, if you
need them.

movie theater program.
Questions 71 through 73 refer to the following announcement.

stopping at all stations to Broadway. Passengers for Jamaica
Station please take this train and change to the Hudson

to boarding. Tickets may be purchased from the ticket

Please wait for further information.
Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following announcement.
[M-Br] Good afternoon, this is your captain speaking. It’s my pleasure
to welcome you on board this Boeing 777. We’ve finished
our pre-flight checks and we’re currently just waiting for the
cargo doors below to close. We already have clearance
for departure, so once they’re shut, we’ll be ready to push
back for our flight to Seattle. While we’re waiting, some flight
information for you. We’ll be flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet
with an air speed of 560 miles an hour. The weather forecast
en route is mainly good, with no turbulence expected. We’re
anticipating a flight time of five and a quarter hours, which will
have us arriving on schedule at 6:30 local time. I’ll give you an
update once we’re airborne. Once again, thank you for your
patience. We should be underway shortly.
Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following radio report.
[M-Am] Next up on DKY Radio: Are you trying to get rid of that old
bike in the garage? Well, don’t throw it out. Sky Youth Project
is counting on you to recycle it. This is the third year they’ve
run their Recyc-a-bike program, with the support of local
businesses, including all of us here at DKY Radio. So far over
400 refurbished bikes have been distributed to deserving kids
and their families throughout the city. If you’re interested, you
just need to take your old bicycle along to the collection point
at the Sky Youth Project office on Sherwood East. They’re
open all weekend, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Don’t worry about
the condition. All the bicycles are sent to Jo’s Bike Center for
refurbishment, so they’ll end up as good as new. Now let’s
hear from spokesperson Chuck Perrier, who’s with me in the
studio to report on the program’s success.

the two of us. Anyway, I understand you’ve been experiencing
problems using your travel card on certain buses. We haven’t
come across this before and I think the best way forward is
for you to bring the card into the office here, if that’s possible,
so we can test it. It sounds as though there’s a problem with
the chip, but we won’t know until we check it out properly on
our equipment. Can I suggest that you give us a call to book
a time to come into the office? You can contact me on my
direct line at 577-555-4821. I look forward to hearing from you.
Good-bye.
Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following talk.
[M-Am] Hi, yes. Can I say that I always listen to your program and I
find all the consumer advice really helpful… Anyway, since
the topic today is credit cards, I just wanted to call and tell
you about a problem I had recently. A few weeks ago I found
that $100 had been taken from my credit card for no reason
at all. It was charged by a hotel chain I stayed with a few
months ago, and because I booked online, I guess they kept
my credit card details. So after sending many, many e-mails
and getting no reply, I had to call the hotel’s customer service
department, which is a long-distance call. They gave me lots
of excuses and it took over a month before I got my money
back. And actually, I’m still out-of-pocket for the cost of calls,
not to mention two hours of my time. So I think there’s a real
question mark about how safe your credit card details are
when you book online.
Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following announcement.
[M-Cn] Attention, shoppers. Welcome to Jenny’s. We have some
amazing deals for you in the store today. In housewares, you
get 30 percent off kitchen gadgets, such as our Coffee King
coffee makers, on sale for only $16, and up to 40 percent

executive office chairs are half price, and there’s up to 20
percent off all stationery. International shoppers, don’t forget
to collect your discount card – good for an extra 10 percent off
all purchases at the visitor’s center. Just show your passport to
claim your card. And remember, there’s no need to go hungry.
Try our Cellar Bar and Grill on the fourth floor for lunch.
Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following talk.
[F-Br] Thank you for your interest in working in a National Trust Bank
call center. The video I’m about to show you is designed to
give you a better idea of the work involved as a member of a
call-center team. At the end you’ll be able to ask questions,
but first I’ll give you some background information. The bank
employs 2,000 people in its call centers around the country.
Employees work around the clock to offer customers advice
on a range of banking issues. In most workplaces, the action
happens in the daytime, but our customers often find it easier
to grab a few minutes after the working day to check up on
their banking and call in for advice. Customers who call us
at night can often be worried about lost cash or bank cards
and it’s our job to put these customers at ease. Working in a
call center can be demanding work, but it is also rewarding to
assist people in a very practical way. Our customer surveys
consistently prove what a good job our call-center staff does
and we, as a company, are fully aware of their value to us.
