Merritts in the Gold $10,000 bingo

After turning it down two weeks earlier, city councillors voted July 26 to approve a new agreement with the Cache Creek-based Gold Country Communities Society that will see Merritts contribution rise to $7,000 per year from the previous $3,000. While some councillors felt that was a huge jump, if Merritt had taken part in a TNRD bylaw last fall to adopt percapita funding for the Gold Country organization, the citys contribution would have risen to at least $17,000.Council authorized city administrators to negotiate a separate deal, but at its July 12 meeting decided not to accept the agreement. But in the end, councillors reconsidered. The Gold Country Communities Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1991, promoting tourism in 12 areas of B.C.s Southern Interior, including Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Logan Lake, and parts of TNRD.
