Tulsi

 Tulsi symbolizes purity.

 The stems, leaves, seeds and even the soil are


considered as holy.

 Tulsi has been used for thousands of years in


Ayurveda for its healing properties.

 It is known as Holy Basil in English and Tulasi in


Sanskrit.

There are a number of varieties of Tulsi.
But following are the main 5 which have great medicinal properties :

1. Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum):


Remedies for
 Common colds,
 headaches,
 stomach disorders,
 inflammation,
 heart disease,
 poisoning and
 malaria.
2. Ram Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum):

Used to treat  Leprosy,


 Respiratory Syndrome-
(cold, fever, bronchitis and cough).

3. Van Tulsi (Ocimum basillcum):

Remedies for  Eye diseases,


 cuts & wounds,
 treating bites of poisonous animals.

4. Sukla Tulsi (Ocimum canum):

Used to treat  Colds,


 fevers,
 lowering blood glucose and
 headaches.

5. Kapoor Tulsi (Ocimum citriodorum):

Used to treat  bacterial infection


 fever,
 migraine,
 colds and flu,
 poor digestion,
 nausea,
 abdominal cramps,
 gastroenteritis,
 insomnia and
 anxiety.

Externally it treats  Acne,


 insect stings and
 skin infection.

Origin and Distribution

• It is native to the Indian subcontinent and other tropical


and subtropical parts of Asia that includes India, Nepal,
Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Myanmar,Thailand, and Taiwan.
• It is introduced to Africa, North America, Caribbean and
South America.

Plant Description

• Tulsi is annual or short-lived perennial plant growing up to


1m height.
• Stem: erect, branched, and woody at base.
• Leaves: petiolate, elliptic oblong blade, serrate margin,
apex obtuse, base cuneate/ wedge shaped. Hairs are
present in stem and both side of leaves.
• Flowers:
• borne terminal, slender racemes or panicles 4–12 cm
long.
• Calyxes are 3-4 in number, lanceolate, glabrous. Flower
is pink or white in color.
• Fruits: small acne shaped brown nutlets about 1mm long
and produce small amount of mucilage when wet.

Climate and Soil


• Tropical and subtropical climatic condition up to 900 m altitude.
• Long days and high temperature yields good amount of essential oil.
• Plant grown in shade produce smaller amount of oil.
• Requires high humidity and moderate rainfall
• sandy loam with better drainage
• pH range: 5.5-7
Propagation
• seeds. 300gm/ha is required.
• Terminal cutting 8-10 nodes and 10-15 cm length is used. Root develops
in about 5 weeks
• Nursery: Seed bed of 4.5m×1m×20cm is suitable. Since seed are small,
seed and sand are mixed in the ratio 1:4. Seed are sown in 8 weeks
prior to monsoon in last of February. Seeds germinate in 1-2 weeks
which can be transplanted in 6-7 weeks at 3-4 leaf stages.

Cultivation

Manures and Fertilizers:


• 15tons/ha FYM, 120:60:60kg/ha NPK.
Irrigation:
• irrigation 2 times a week for 4 weeks.
Harvesting and Yield:
• Harvested at full bloom stage at 90-95 days of planting to obtain
higher essential oil yield.
• It may be harvested at every 65-75 days interval afterward.
• Plants are cut at least 15 cm above the ground level to ensure
good regeneration for future harvests.
• Oil is extracted by steam distillation.
• 9-14 tons/ha can be obtained by two to three harvests in a year.
• Oil content is differed with type, season and place of origin.

applying to body will work as mosquito repellent.

Apply 8-10 drops of Tulsi with any hair oil
to the scalp. It will reduce itchiness of the scalp and
hair fall.

dizziness and coma.
