HAMLET : a Synopsis
Hamlet was the Prince of Denmark. He was handsome and intelligent, and he was in love with
Ophelia, an honest, sensitive young girl. When Hamlet’s father died, his evil uncle, Claudius,
became the new king and soon afterwards Claudius married Hamlet’s mother. Hamlet was very
unhappy, and his heart was fill with rage and hatred: he started to become more and more
disturbed.
Then, one night, the ghost of Hamlet’s father appeared and told him that his ambitious brother,
Claudius, had murdered him. Hamlet wanted to kill Claudius, but he was very indecisive. He
acted strangely and was cruel to Ophelia. Everybody thought that Hamlet was mad.
Hamlet thought his mother Gertude was insensitive. He could not understand why she was so
calm and how she could marry the arrogant Claudius. One night, Hamlet went to see his mother
and, while they were talking, he thought Claudius was listening behind a curtain and killed him.
But for Hamlet’s horror and surprise, it wasn’t Claudius—it was Ophelia’s father !! Hamlet ran
away to England. Meanwhile, Ophelia went mad and drowned herself into a river.
Later, Hamlet returned to Denmark and met Ophelia’s brother, the brave Laertes. Laertes
hated Hamlet; he blamed Hamlet for Ophelia’s death and wanted to avenge his father’s murder.
Therefore, he challenged Hamlet to a duel. While they were preparing for the fight, Claudius
poisoned their swords and also made some poisoned wine to give Hamlet if he won the fight.
While they were fighting, Hamlet’s mother drank the poisoned wine and fell to the floor. During
the confusion, Hamlet and Lartes stabbed each other. Finally Hamlet, fatally wounded, killed
Claudius with his poisoned sword and took revenge over his father with his last breath.
