Education- to be Educated -Educated
Literally, the word ‘education’ came from the Latin word educere which means,
‘to lead’. Having this literal meaning, one may say that ‘to be educated’ means to be led
by someone or something and ‘educated’ as someone who is being led. But this
definition as time passes evolved. The word education is later become a connotation of
‘teaching’, to be educated linked to studying, and being educated to being learned.
Education is also link to good manners. In Filipino culture, one’s being educado or
educated is measured in his attitude and social grace. If a person’s conduct is refined
and good, it is seen as a proof of his education while a person’s misconduct defines him
or her as mal educado which means “bad education”. Commonly a person is assumed by
others to be ‘educated’ when he or she have a good job and salary. Big business
enterprises always look the educational background in the resumé of their applicants to
assure the companies good name. Whether one will apply as a domestic helper, a call
center agent, a janitor or whatever job, their path of education is being scrutinized.
Another common connotation among different groups of culture is that when one is an
educated person, he or she earned the respect of others.
With these different connotations concerning education, one thing is for sure.
Education exists to lead the people from the darkness of ignorance into the light of
knowledge and truth. It is not only a process of learning but also a cultivation of one’s
character. It feeds not only the mind with facts and data but also nourishes the soul
which enables a person to act accordingly.
