Soil: Load-Bearing Value

A soil test is the only way to really know the

load-bearing value (LBV) of the soil for your
intended footers. But below is a guide to basic
soil types and their LBVs:
 Bedrock: 12,000 (Pounds Per Sq. Foot)

 Sedimentary rock: 6,000

 Sandy gravel or gravel: 5,000

 Sand, silty sand, clayey sand, silty

gravel, and clayey gravel: 3,000

 Clay, sandy clay, silty clay, and clayey

silt: 2,000

Depth of Footings

Footings should extend to a minimum of

12" below undisturbed soil. Undisturbed soil is
soil that has never been turned over, tilled,
graded, hoed, or anything of that nature, by man
or machine.
