Content Measurement to meet the specific contractual specifications and requirements of
the Project - Clean Fuels Project (CFP).

2.0 SCOPE
This procedure describes the minimum requirements for ferrit content measurment in weld
metal and clad layers of austenitic or Duplex stainless steel and for determination of the
ratio of Ferrite in Austenitic and Duplex stainless steels by using FERITSCOPE MP30.
This scope includes the methods of calibration, evaluation and reporting. This document

FERRITE CONTENT MEASUREMENT Doc . No. VG3100-001-A-3014,Rev.F1

PROCEDURE

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS

5.1.1 The instrument should be operated by Experienced personnel only.

5.2 EQUIPMENT

5.2.1 Basic Unit

The equipment used to measure ferrite content shall be FERITSCOPE
MP30, FMP30 which shall give digital read out value either in %Fe (Ferrite
Percentage) or FN ( Ferrite Number)

5.2.2 Test Method

This instrument uses the magneticinduction test method whereby the ferrite
content is obtained from the magnetic permeability.

5.2.3 Type of Measuring Mode

 Standard Measuring Mode

In standard measuring mode single measurements are taken
consecutively on the same part and are then combined into a block. The
resulting block mean value then represents the local ferrite content of
the reference area.
 Matrix Measuring Mode
Matrix measuring mode is ideally suited for applications, where
different measuring objects of the same type have to be measured
sequentially always on the same specific reference area, and where the
measurement data from the corresponding areas are to be combined into
blocks.

5.3 MAKING A MEASUREMENT

5.3.1 The probe has to be placed vertically on the surface of the measuring object
to perform a measurement. The measurement should be performed within
the reference area.

5.3.2 Following the measurement appears in the display, the probe can be lifted
and is ready for the next measurement.

5.3.3 Probe tips to be kept atleast 50mm(2”) away from any metal object prior to
each measurement. Do not hover the probe above the measuring object.

FERRITE CONTENT MEASUREMENT Doc . No. VG3100-001-A-3014,Rev.F1

PROCEDURE

5.3.4 Measurements shall be made along the approximate centreline of a given

weld bead and shall itbe as per the requirements of ISO 8249.

5.4 INFLUENCING FACTORS

5.4.1 Curvature of the measuring object

5.4.2 Thickness of the measuring object

5.4.3 Layer thickness

5.4.4 Distance of the measuring position to the edge

5.5 CORRECTION FACTOR

The effects of influencing factors can be corrected by multiplying the measured

ferrite content with the corresponding correction factors.Generally, a correction of
these influences is required in following conditions.

5.5.1 The diameter of the curvature is smaller than 50mm with convex curvature
and smaller than 80mm with concave curvature.
5.5.2 The thickness of the measuring object is smaller than 2mm.
5.5.3 The layer thickness is smaller than 2mm.
5.5.4 The distance of the measuring position to the edge is smaller than 2mm.

5.6 CALIBRATION

Base unit shall be calibrated annually or after major repair as per AWS A4.2M
The base of the calibration standard set is used for the normalization. Three
calibration standards are used in addition to the base for the periodic verification
and corrective calibration. The average value of five measurements at individaul
position on the calibration standard shall be within the maximum deviation
specified in table below.

FERRITE CONTENT MEASUREMENT Doc . No. VG3100-001-A-3014,Rev.F1

PROCEDURE

Normalization and calibration measurements shall be taken also on the base of the
calibration standards.
Normalization and calibration measurements are to be taken within a circular area
having a diameter of 10 mm around the center of the base or the calibration
standard.
5.7 NORMALISATION
Normalization is performed for adjusting the measuring instrument to a new zero
value.
5.8 SURFACE PREPARATION
The Test area shall be free from grease, dirt etc. There should not be any items near
the object which may interfere with the magnetic characteristics of the
measurement.

5.9 OPERATION AND STORAGE OF INSTRUMENT

Instrument and accessories are designed for use at temperature between 5 and 45
deg C. Storage shall be done at temperature between 5 and 60 deg C.
The instrument is to be effectively shielded from electromagnetic fields
(eg.motors,power lines etc.)
Instrument and accessories are to be protected from static charge.
5.10 RECORDS

The FN no. of the deposited weld metal of all austenitic stainless steel shop and
field welds shall be in the range of 3 FN to 8 FN.For (super) duplex stainless steel
the FN shall be in the range of 40% - 60% for parent metal and HAZ, and in the
range of 30% - 60% for the weld Metal

Ferrite Numbers shall be measured in accordance with ISO 8249.

6.0 SAFETY
4.11.1The area of examination shall have adequate lighting and ventilation.
4.11.2 Fire and Safety Regulation of Client shall be adhered.
