INTRODUCTION
Six Sigma is a set of techniques, and tools for process
improvement. it was developed by MOTOROLA in 1986.
Sir Bill Smith,"The Father of six sigma" introduce this qulity
improvement Methodology to Motorola.
Six Sigma is now an enormous 'brand' in the world of coporate
development.
DEFINATION
Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by
identifying and removing the cause of defects.
This approach is a collection of managerial and staticstical concept
and techniques that focused on reducing variation in processes and
preventing deficiencies in product.
The concept of variation states "NO two items will be perfectly
identical."
It reduces variation, improves quality, focuses on the customer and
optimizing steps.
A six sigma process is one in which 99.9999966% of the products
manufactured are statically expected to be free of defects "3.4
defects per million"
Six sigma is very clever way of branding and packaging many
aspects of Total Quality Management.
Manufacturing methods of six sigma are used in Batch production,
Job production and Mass production.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SIX SIGMA
Statistical Quality Control
Six Sigma is clearly derived from the Greek letter 'Sigma'. which is used
to denote standard deviation in statistics. This is used to measure
variance.
Methodical Approach
The six sigma is not merely a quality improvement strategy in theory,as it
features a well defined methodical approach of application in DMAIC
(Design-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control)which can be used to
improve the quality of production.
Project and Objective Based Focus
The six sigma process is implemented for an organisation's project
tailored to its specification and requirement. The process is flexed to
suit the requirement and condition in which a project is operating to
get best results.
Teamwork Approach to Quality Management
The six sigma process requires organisation to get organised when it
comes to controlling and improving quality .This actually involves a lot
of training depending on the role of an indvisual in the quality
management team.
TRADITIONAL VS SIX SIGMA MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVE
Overall Business Improvement
Remedy Defects
Reduce Cost
Improve Cycle Time
Increase Customer Satisfaction
CORRECTION , CORRECTIVE AN
PREVENTIVE ACTION
DPU AND DPMO
DPU is the number of defects in a given unit of product or process.
DPMO is the Defects per million opportunities.
LEVELS OF SIX SIGMA
METHODOLOGIES
D.M.A.I.C.
Is used for projects aimed at improving an existing business process.
Define:-
The voice of the customer and their requirements, and the project goals.
Measure:-
Measure Key aspects of the current process and collect relevant data.
Analyse:-
Analyse the data to investigate and verify cause and effect relationship.
Improve:-
Improve or optimise the current process based upon data analysis using
techniques.
Control:-
Control the future state process to ensure that any deviations from
target are corrected before they results in defects.
