great influence in your present life. You may change the format of the

Significant Achievement My greatest achievement in life so

far is learning how to accept
failures. It is my motivation, it make
me stouter, wiser in choosing
actions that I shall take and strive
more to do better in the next step
ahead. Growing up unveils to the
reality. There were times that I
failed being a good student, being a
good daughter and being the best

version of myself. My failures made

me feel that I’m not smart enough
and I’m not capable of doing things
around. It also made me feel that
I’m in a shameful situation where
everybody could easily judge me
base on my failure and thought
about how my life could possibly
be if I remained being a kid without
to much pressure. “ Failure is the
key to success”

Significant Challenges Growing up is the significant

challenges because growing up is
hard. It’s challenging to grow up,
and taking on responsibilities is
never simple. You don’t truly
understand how challenging
adulthood is until you have to
mature and accept responsibilities
one day. When I was younger, I
definitely took advantage of not
having to pay bills, learning how to
cook, learning to do laundry, etc.
Being an adult is scary. Going out
into the real world is scary. Taking
responsibility for yourself and your
actions is scary. But you know
what? You have to grow up
whether you are ready for it or not.
There can be so many great things
that will come from growing up, no
matter how challenging and
difficult it is.

1. Using the insights/knowledge that you’ve gained from the 1 st documentary on
the historical development of Philippine educational system, how does the
development type of educational system (based on the focus, e.g. religion)
influence the development of Filipino national consciousness?
- Three main factors—the economics, education, and the secularization of
parishes—led to its emergence. These elements supported the emergence of
Filipino nationalism. A few examples of how the Philippines evolved into a stable
nation include opening up to international or world trade, the emergence of the
middle class, and the introduction of liberal principles from Europe. During the

1880s and 1890s, a reform or propaganda movement was launched in both the
Philippines and Spain with the goal of “propagandizing” Philippine conditions in
the hope that desired changes in the social, political, and economic lives of the
Filipinos would be brought about through this method.

2. In the 2nd documentary you’ve learned that Jose Rizal’s ancestors were not
really from the Philippines, but from China, would this fact affect the idea of Rizal
being a Filipino National hero, and the symbol of Filipino greatness? Why or why
not?
- It does not affect for being a hero because whatever your origin or social status
is, if you love and contribute this country you can be a hero. People will
recognize you as hero. It does not being a rich or something but it is you being
you. Your forebears is not a basis for who you are.

LET’S CONTEMPLATE
Instructions: Based on the articles that you have read,
contemplate on what is the most significant accomplishment
of Rizal in during his childhood, studies in Ateneo Municipal, and
University Sto. Tomas. Explain your answer.
(Note: The significance of the accomplishment should be identified based
on how it shaped the character of our National Hero and it’s importance to
the Filipino Nation.

Childhood Accomplishment: The childhood of Jose Rizal can be characterized by his desire
to learn, even frequenting the church nearby his home to watch and observe people.

Explanation:
After demanding that he be taught to read and share the skills his older sister had learned,
Jose Rizal began learning his letters at the age of three. Rizal even made an attempt to use a
syllabary to spell out the words in his sister’s story book in a manner similar to how one does
when using a dictionary in a foreign language. Additionally, he spent a lot of this time simply
watching or monitoring the people entering and exiting a church close to his home. Jose Rizal’s
three uncles, who were his mother’s siblings, also had a significant impact throughout his
formative years. Jose, the youngest uncle, was in charge of giving Rizal his regular lessons. His
enormous uncle Manuel worked on his physique till he was no longer a scrawny and sickly
youngster and had a body of silk and steel. Rizal was taught by his final uncle, Gregorio, that
success requires effort and cannot be taken for granted There was a time when Rizal was able
to sketch a bird that was nearby without ever taking his pencil off the paper until he was done.
He can also depict a chasing dog and a horse that is moving. Rizal's favorite playthings were
clay and wax. He created model butterflies and birds using these materials. His exploration of
nature also began with this animal sculpting pastime. Even in his childhood, Rizal already knew

how to respect the rights of others and requested his elders to reason with him rather than get
mad at him for small offenses. He became a welcome companion for adults even at his young
age since he respected their moods and was never a hindrance to their activities.

 He Won five medals at the end of school term. (4thYear)

Studies at University of Sto. Tomas: Rizal’s achievements in UST and Ateneo

Explanation:
- Land Surveyor’s and Assessor's Degree (Ateneo)
- Philosophy and Letters (UST)
- Ophthalmology (UST)
Rizal eventually earned a land surveyor’s and assessor’s degree from the Ateneo
Municipal while taking up Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas. Upon
learning that his mother was going blind, Rizal opted to study ophthalmology at the UST
Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. One of the reasons why he chose medicine was his
desire to cure his mother’s growing blindness due to cataract. His grades in the medical
course were “fair and good” unlike in Ateneo where he got excellent grades in all
subjects. These gave Rizal a heavy heart for he knew he fared better than his
peninsulares classmates. After graduating with highest honor with the degree of Bachelor
of Arts which was equivalent to only high school during the Spanish time in Ateneo, Jose
Rizal decided to continue his studies in Manila. Aside from his strong desire to finish his
medical course due to his mother’s illness, there were three other reasons why Rizal
decided to continue his studies abroad.
1. The biased and hostile Dominican professor against him.
2. He was disgusted with the antiquated method of instruction in the University.
3. The racial discrimination that the Dominican professor had against Filipino.
