EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The proposed business is agro based; it entails production of maize in large scale. The
objective of this business is to produce maize to meet the social demand. The initiative is to start
a maize farm plantation with a minimum of 4 hectares of farmland to be cultivated throughout
the duration of maize growing season next year. Target yield is 5 tons per hectare. With total
input of 4 hectares of land, it is expected that the farm can inject about 20 tons of maize into the
market and ultimately market is targeted at Fresh maize buyers and Dried grains Buyers.
With the experience I have garnered from small scale maize farming it is evident that it
will be worthwhile to expand the business into a commercial venture to be producing in large
quantity. I believe my ability to organize, direct, control and equally calculate the risk will make
this business succeed without any iota of doubt in my mind.
FINANCIAL PROJECTION
LAND LEASE N15,000
MACHINERIES ( RENT)
For both first and second N20,000
operation – ploughing and tilling
PLANTING (LABOUR COST) N10, 000
WEED CONTROL N5,000
INSECTICIDES N5,000
TREATED SEEDLINGS N2,500
TOTAL N57,500
The above illustrated cost breakdown is for 1 hectare of land.
For the proposed 4 hectares of land the total cost will be multiplied by 4
57, 500 x 4 = 230,000
Therefore, the grand total cost of the farm project = 230,000 naira
RISK IDENTIFICATION AND MITIGATION STRATEGIES
There are several types of weeds, pests and diseases that affect maize plants such as stem
borers, army worms, grasshoppers, larger grain borers, downy mildew, maize streak virus and
Striga among others. Fortunately, there are several herbicides, pesticides and disease control
methods i can apply to prevent a breakout on my farm.
HARVEST: WHAT TO EXPECT
The amount of maize that can be harvested (per hectare) depends on the variety of maize
seedlings, amount of rainfall, sunshine and the level of weed, pest and disease control
management that was applied. However, The target yield is at least 5 tons per hectare.
