     Nicaragua; March 20, 1893 - Paris,

against the dictatorship of José Santos
Zelaya. When he was 12 years old, his

during his visit to León and offered him a
speech in which he recalled the rights of
man and the citizen being to the liking of
the dictator, who ordered the release of
his father and offered him a scholarship
to study in the United States, where he
left at the age of 13.
He studied at Williams College in

Darío in New York, whom he
accompanied to a recital lecture offered
at Columbia University on February 4,
     1915.
In 1918 he published his poetry book
Tropical Town and Other Poems in New
York. During these years he frequented
the literary circles of young New York
     poets, including Stephen Vincent Benét
and Edna St. Vincent Millay, with whom
     he had an affair.
