INTRODUCTION
Basketball is a widely popular and loved sport that is played all around the world.
Basketball is essential in promoting cardiovascular health among its players. It is
immensely helpful for one’s heart health. Due to the game’s constant locomotion, the
heart rate shows an increase. Thus, basketball lowers the risk of stroke and other heart
diseases. Basketball is supremely effective in burning calories. Due to its constant,
quick movements of running and jumping, basketball acts as a great way of working out
and can drastically burn calories.

DISCUSSION
History
Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 as an indoor “athletic
distraction” for students of Springfield College in the United States. The first game was
played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets, which was hung three meters high on
a court, and whose area is half of the present basketball court. Basketball became the
so popular that other countries adopted the sport. It became an Olympic event in 1936
in Berlin, Germany.

Equipment
Playing basketball requires only a court with two basketball rings hung on a stand
on each opposite side (which serves as goals), and a basketball. Players should wear
specific basketball wear/attire such as jersey shorts and sleeveless tops. Shoes are
often specialized for playing basketball.
Court
The court measures 28 m x 15 m. Lines should be 5 cm wide and clearly visible.
The end-lines are not part of the court. Bench occupants and table officials should be at
least 2 m away from the
sidelines. The center circle
should have a radius of 1.8
m. the semi-circle free throw
lines should be parallel to
the end lines. An arc with a
radius of 6.75 m is
measured with the center
beneath the ring. The
distance should be 1.575 m.
the arc is joined to the
parallel lines. The three-
point line is not part of the
three-point goal area.
Basic Skills
Dribbling is a move wherein the
player is pushing down the ball repeatedly
against the floor with one hands or both
hands alternately, allowing the ball to bounce.
In dribbling, a player executes a ready
stance by bending his or her knees., keeping

feet apart at shoulder width. The dribbler’s body is leaning slightly forward while
dribbling using the fingers of a dominant hand.
Passing, is a necessary skill so that the
receiver gets the ball properly if passed to him.
An offensive player (often a right-handed
dribbler), usually a guard, has to execute a ready
stance by bending his or her knees, and his or her
left foot forward. To pass the ball, you have to hold
the ball at chest level, extend your arms, look for a
teammate to receive the ball, and prepare to ward
off defensive player trying to block your line of
sight or get the ball from your possession. Use
your wrist to flip the ball to a teammate.
Shooting is an important
skill because this will make your
points. A shot is made after the
ball enters into a ring.
In an open stance, bend
your knees and place one foot
forward. Hold the ball slightly
above your head. Bend your
elbows while preparing for the
ball’s right trajectory.
Catching a ball is important to prevent a loose ball.
To do a catching stance correctly, do the open stance by bending your knees,
shoulder width feet apart, and your hands at chest level. Your eyes should be on the
ball. Pull your hands slightly toward your chest upon receiving the ball to absorb the
impact of a forward force, or use your hands as shock absorbers for a hard pass.
Rules
Basketball is played
by two teams of five players
each. The offensive team has to make points in their basket located at the opponents’
area. The defensive team, meanwhile, has to prevent the attackers from scoring. The
team that makes the most points wins after a predetermined period, usually an hour or
less. For example, the match is set for two halves, and each half runs for 20 minutes.

Therefore, the game will run for 20 minutes for the second half. The team who has the
most points after this period of time is the winner.
Fouls
Personal fouls include hitting, pushing, slapping, holding, and illegal screening.
Illegal screening occurs when a moving offensive player sticks out his or her hand or leg
and makes physical contact with a defender in an attempt to block the path of the
defender in an attempt to block the path of the defender.
Penalties
An offensive player gets two free throws after being fouled by a defender while
attempting to make a basket but missed the ring. If his or her two-point attempt to
succeeded despite being fouled, he or she awarded one free throw. However, three free
throws would despite being fouled, he or she awarded if the player is fouled while
shooting for a three-point field goal but missed the shot. But he or she made the shot,
he or she gets only one free throw.
If fouled while not in the act of shooting, the ball is given to the to the offensive
team. The team gets the ball at the nearest side or baseline. The team is allowed only
five seconds to make the inbound pass. If a team commits seven or more fouls during
the game, the player who was fouled after the seventh is awarded one free throw. If
successful, he is awarded one free throw. If successful, he is awarded another free
throw. If a team commits 10 or more fouls, the fouled player after the 10 th foul is
awarded two free throw. A charging foul, on the other hand, is slapped to an offensive
player if he or she pushes or runs over the defensive player. The ball is given to the
team who was fouled.
Blocking is an illegal personal contact made by a defender who failed to
establish his or her position in time to prevent an offensive player to make a drive
toward the basket. A flagrant foul is called against a player who hits, kicks, punches,
and does other physical acts against another player. The fouled player is awarded free
throws and the offended team retains possession of the ball after the free throws. An
intentional foul is called against the player who makes physical contact with another
without any reasonable effort to steal the ball. The intentional foul is a judgment call for
the officials.
A technical foul is called when a player or coach commits some infractions of
the rules. It does not involve player contact but focuses more on the court manners of
the players during a game. Foul language, obscene gestures, or even arguing during a
game c an be called a technical foul.
Violations
Violations include travelling, palming or carrying the ball, double dribbling, held
ball, goal tending, back-court violation, and time restrictions.
