w05 - Work Method Statement

This document provides a work method statement for applying an external waterproofing system to an exposed non-trafficable roof. It outlines preparing the substrate, using levelling materials if needed to create falls, applying a waterproofing membrane, and details of the specific Mapei products and application methods recommended. These include priming and applying two coats of the flexible liquid membrane Aquaflex Roof with reinforcement mesh embedded, as well as using bond breakers and sealing joints and terminations. The statement notes this system is intended for light foot traffic only and point loads larger than this must be evaluated.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT MAPEI: W05

Waterproofing System – External System Version: 14/12/2017

Exposed Non-Trafficable Roof Waterproofing Revision: 0

PART 1 SYSTEM

1.1 REFERENCES

1. AS 4654.2 (2012) – Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use – Part 2:

Design and installation

1.2 SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

All substrates must be structurally sound, dry, solid and stable. Any laitance, dust, grease, oil,
paint or curing compounds present on the surface of the substrate that may inhibit bond, shall be
mechanically removed. The substrate should then be cleaned and prepared in accordance with
the relevant standards and as per the MAPEI technical data sheets (TDS).
Concrete or screed surface should have a minimum equivalent of a wood float or light broom
finish to aid in adhesion.

1.3 LEVELLING MATERIAL – WHERE REQUIRED

 NOTE: Ensure substrate has adequate falls in accordance with Clause 2.5.2 of
AS4654.2. If not, the below two options should be utilized to create falls.
Levelling material to be chosen from the following options:
A. MAPECEM QUICKPATCH (PR4914, 2010) – Recommended <10 mm
1. High performance, high flow concrete patch.
 APPLICATION:

Immediately after mixing, pour mix onto the surface and work it in to obtain an
excellent mechanical bond, in thicknesses from 1 to 75 mm.
B. TOPCEM PRONTO (209-7-2017 AUS) – >10 mm
1. Ready-to-use normal setting, controlled-shrinkage mortar for quick-drying screeds (4
days).
 NOTE: Prior to the application of the screed:
 If the entire area of the roof is to receive a screed, Mapei recommends adding
a primary waterproofing membrane prior to screeding with MAPELASTIC
SMART (2013-8-2017 GB).
 Ensure a slurry coat of PLANICRETE SP (700-6-2016) mixed with TOPCEM
(207-02-2017 AUS) has been applied. Refer to the TDS for mixing details,
 Ensure screed is applied over the slurry coat whilst the slurry coat is still wet.
 APPLICATION:
 Screed to be in accordance with AS3958.1 (2007).
 Mix water and TOPCEM PRONTO in strict accordance with the ratios
described in the TDS.
 Ensure a minimum thickness of 10 mm is applied.

1.4 WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE

A. AQUAFLEX ROOF (2121-08-2017 AUS)

1. Ready-to-use flexible liquid membrane with fibres for continuous waterproofing layers
on exposed surfaces.
 NOTE: Prior to the application of the waterproofing membrane:
 Apply a bond breaker/tape with MAPEBAND (337-9-2016 GB) or MAPEBAND
SA (2179-10-2013) or a flexible fillet with MAPEFLEX PU45 FT (8102-10-2016
GB) at all wall/wall, wall/floor junctions and all other areas where movement is
expected. Ensure flexible fillet is dry and fully cured if used before applying
membrane.
 Ensure structural joints are sealed and applied with MAPEBAND TPE (2033-
11-2010) in strict accordance with the TDS,
 APPLICATION:
 Prime the surface with a coat of AQUAFLEX ROOF diluted with 10% water.
 Apply two dry coats of AQUAFLEX ROOF approximately 0.4 to 0.5 mm thick
each with a suitable long-haired roller, brush or airless spray.
 It is recommended (required when micro cracks are present) to lay MAPETEX
SEL (911-12-2016 GB) or MAPETEX 50 (956-10-2016 GB) reinforcement
mesh into the wet first coat of the waterproofing membrane, ensuring it is
completely embedded, in strict accordance with the TDS.
 Wait until the first coat is completely dry and that it becomes slightly dark in
colour (Approx. 8-12 hours) before applying the second coat in a criss-cross
direction to the first.
 Floor waterproofing membrane to be returned up wall substrates over the bond
breaker/tape in accordance with AS4654.2 and the TDS, and returned down
into wastes.
 Ensure termination of membrane is in accordance with AS 4654.2.
