The majority of modern centrifugal
compressors are equipped with Dry
Gas Seals (DGS)
Reasons:
- Longer Service Life
- No lubricating oil in
process gas
- No lubricating oil
consumption
- No oil contamination of
catalyst
Dry Gas Seals Principle of Operation
• Dry Gas Seals are the
seals where the process
gas leakage protection is
done by the thin film of
gas between rotating
and stationary seal
faces.
• The thickness of gas
film is just few micron.
• The rotating and
stationary seal faces are
not in contact.

in the South of
Russia

2015 – upgrade of ethylene compressor unit consists of two connected


compressors, four stages totally, Borsig make. Suction pressure 0.04 bar,
discharge pressure 38 bar. After upgrade the compressor was in operation without
any problems with seals for the four years ( 2015-2019). Before the upgrade 1-3
seal repairs per year took place with the compressor shutdown.

Plant in a south of Russia
2017 – upgrade of four compressor units. The
upgrade was completed during the plant shut
down (40 days). The operation of all upgraded
compressors started at the same time:
A. Pyrolysis gas compressor unit consists of three connected compressors, five
stages totally, Thomassen make. The suction pressure 0.1 bar, discharge
pressure 35 bar;
B. Recycle gas compressor unit consists of two connected compressors, four
stages totally, Borsig make. The suction pressure 0.2 bar, discharge pressure
30.5 bar;
C. Propylene three stages compressor unit of Thomassen make. The suction
pressure 0.2 bar, discharge pressure 16.2 bar;
D. Reaction sour gas overhang compressor unit of Borsig make. The suction
pressure 5.6 bar, discharge pressure 9.8 bar.
