Area(s) of Interest: Conservation of Art and Community Development
Title for the Research Proposal: Pottery Art and Architecture
       Brief Description of proposal :
Pottery Art is one of the most timeless living craft traditions of India that is practiced across
the length and breadth of the country. But with time, there is a rapid decrease in pottery
practice due to various reasons. The site I have chosen is a rural sector in Kochi. Pottery has
been practiced here for more than 150 years. The older generation in this community wants to
continue their profession but there are no proper facilities and institutes for the same. Each of
these potters consider pottery as a passion more than a profession. They are deeply invested in
the art form – mentally, physically and emotionally. Unfortunately, this profession does not
allow them to earn a decent living, more so, because of lack of government funding and
people moving onto the use of traditional handicrafts which is now being replaced by more
utilitarian goods like plastic cups and vessels which are manufactured in China. Pottery culture
is passed on hereditary. Majority of people in this generation find it less interesting due to
which they abandon this job after which nobody is ready to continue their culture and
profession. Whereas there are people from outside who have interest in learning the art but
have no opportunities to learn the craft. The research aims at improving the lives of the
potters, their pottery community development and for the promotion of pottery as an art.
