CCR q3

The student learned many new skills throughout creating their magazine project. They gained an understanding of magazine anatomy, conventions, and production through research and class activities. Practical photography classes helped them learn lighting, angles, and shooting techniques. While the photoshoot presented challenges with equipment, timing, and retakes, they improved quickly. In post-production, the student became more comfortable using digital art software like Procreate, applying tools, blending modes, and effects to achieve their desired results. Overall, feedback from their teacher and peers helped them develop their graphic design, creative, and production abilities.

CCR Q3

How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

When I entered my first media studies class, I had no idea what codes and
conventions were, visual & technical codes, rule of thirds, mise-en scene and
narrative etc. I didn’t know what the features of a magazine were, how and where
they were produced and distributed. I only had knowledge on graphic designing and
illustration as it’s a huge hobby of mine. And those skills definitely improved during
this project.

Throughout the whole pre-production, production and post-production process, I

learnt a lot from this experience. In my preliminary tasks, we had a class activity
where we had to bring in a physical magazine or newspaper and analyse the front
cover and the photos in them. This helped me understand the anatomy of a
magazine, and with some more research on popular magazines like Vogue and
Harper's Bazaar I understood the reason and purpose of why this text is placed there
and why the fonts and font size matter so much. There was a wide range of
information available online which assisted me in the research and planning section
of my magazine. Pinterest was my main source of inspiration throughout this whole
process.

As for the photography part of the project, I had no information prior to Year 12. My
teacher conducted some practical classes on how to set up and use the lighting, and
how to use the tripod. We practised different shots and angles like full shot, mid shot,
close up, extreme long shot and different angles. These activities helped in my
understanding of how to conduct the photoshoot. For my models, I asked 2 of my
close friends, Vidushi and Caron and they gladly agreed. When I did begin my
photoshoot process, I had a lot of trouble with the lighting and it took me a while to
set it up and get used to it, same with setting up the tripod. But I got used to it after a
couple of tries. Since I was doing my photoshoot during school, time was an issue
because Vidushi and Caron weren’t always available at the same time as me but we
were able to manage. Plus, I only had 2 days to do the shooting since we had winter
break after and then midterm exams. There was one shot which I had to retake in a
short period of time because my teacher assisted in retaking it since it would make a
great difference and it was needed. I did not get to use the camera though because I
decided to use my phone for the photoshoot, but I was still able to use my knowledge
of different shots to take good photos. Even though I worked under a bit of pressure,
I was able to learn quickly and my friends were very cooperative.

In the post-production process, I did use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator at
the start but resorted to using Procreate which is an IOS digital painting software
available on iPad since i've been using it for 3 years and was more comfortable with
it and it did include a lot of the similar features in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, at
those times where the needed tool was not there, I was forced to think of other ways
of how I can do it to achieve the result I needed. I used a lot of the smudge tool,
different brushes included different textures, the fonts and kerning, different blending
modes like multiply, add, overlay and different effects like noise, glitch, chromatic
aberration and halftone along with gaussian blur and gradient map.
Overall with the feedback and guidance of my teacher and peers, I obtained great
understanding on how to use photography equipment, how to put together a
magazine and challenge my creative ability and overall develop my graphic design
experience.
