CHAPTER I
Introduction

Most countries throughout the world have temporarily closed

educational institutions to control viral transmission and lessen the number of

sick people (Tria, 2020). The surge of COVID-19 in the Philippines altered the

educational environment significantly. The Philippines is currently undergoing

an adjustment period to the new normal form of education. Educators'

ongoing innovations, combined with the active participation of other

stakeholders, are the driving forces behind the country's future success

(Dangle & Sumaoang, 2020). The Department of Education (DepEd)

designed the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP). It ensures

that learners are provided with learning opportunities safely through various

learning modalities in distance learning. One of these is the mode of teaching

or distance learning modalities implemented by the DepEd (Castroverde &

Acala, 2021). Distance learning is a type of learning between a teacher and

students who are geographically separated at the time of teaching. Modular

Distance Learning (MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-

Based Instruction are the three types of this modality (Quinones, 2020).

Modular education is the most common type of distance education.

This instruction is employed in all public schools in the Philippines to ensure

the continuity of education. Each school continues to achieve its objective and

vision of providing quality education to every Filipino learner (Dangle &

Sumaoang, 2020). The transition of teaching-learning delivery in schools to

modular remote learning made quality primary education more difficult for

school workers. That is why DepEd leaders are constantly looking for
solutions to challenges and preparing teachers and school administrators to

be more effective in modular distance learning (Bagood, 2020).

However, the changes to remote learning have taken a substantial

physical and emotional toll on many students, educators, and leaders,

intensifying underlying engagement and mental health issues (Bracket et al.,

2020).

And with schools across the globe turning into distance learning during

the pandemic, it arise the researchers' interest to study about the factors

affecting the Grade 12 HUMSS student’s academic performance in the new

normal setting of education.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework of this study shows the relationship among

the independent variable, and the dependent variable. The independent

variable considered in the study is the factors affecting the Grade 12 HUMSS

students’ academic performance and relationship to the new normal setting of

education.

New Normal Setting of
Education
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the factors affecting the student’s

academic performance in the new normal setting of education level of of

selected grade 12 students in Sergio L. Legayada National High School.

Specially, it seeks to answer the following question:

1. What is the level of academic performance of the students in the

new normal setting of education?

2. What are the factors affecting students’ academic performance in

the new normal setting of education to the Grade 12 HUMSS Students of

SLLNHS?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the level of academic

performance of students and the factors affecting to the new normal setting of

education?

Hypothesis of the Study

There is no significant relationship between the academic performance

of students to the new normal setting of education.

Significance of the Study

The study results may greatly benefit the teachers, students, parents,

future researchers, and schools.

To the Students- This study can help the students to understand what

are the changes and challenges they are facing in the new normal education.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the identifying the Factors affecting Grade 12

HUMSS students’ Academic Performance in the New Normal Education

Setting of Sergio L. Legayada National High School of the academic year

2021-2022.

The respondents of this study are delimited to 20 Grade 12 Humanities

and Social Sciences students of the locale in the school year 2021-2022. The

study will be conducted from January 2022 to March 2022 at Sergio L.

Legayada National High School. Norala, South Cotabato.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For a better understanding of the study, the important terms are defined
conceptually and operationally below:

Factor/s – negative/positive ideas that affects students’ academic

performance.

New Normal - a new normal is a state to which an economy, society, etc.

settles following a crisis, when this differs from the situation that prevailed
prior to the start of the crisis

Academic Performance - is the measurement of student achievement

across various academic subjects

Students – The selected Grade 12 students of Sergio Legayada National

High School and the respondents of the study.
CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the relevant works, literature, and studies of local

and foreign authors for the purpose of establishing a deeper and better

understanding of the topic and the problem and as basis of the methods and

claims used in the study.

Covid 19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infection disease caused by the

SARSCoV-2 Virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderare

respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However,

some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and

those with underlying medical condition like cardiovascular disease, diabetes,

chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely develop serious illness.

Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any

age.

Education and the COVID-19 pandemic

In December 2019, an outbreak of a novel coronavirus, known as

COVID-19, occurred in China and has spread rapidly across the globe within

a few months, COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of

coronavirus that attacks the respiratory system (World Health Organization,

2020). As of January 2021, COVID-19 has infected 94 million people and has
caused 2 million deaths in 191 countries and territories (John Hopkins

University, 2021). This pandemic has created a massive disruption of the

educational systems, affecting over 1.5 billion students. It is forced the

government to cancel national examinations and the schools to temporarily

close, cease face-to-face instruction, and strictly observe physical distancing.

These events have sparked the digital transformation of higher education and

challenged its ability to respond promptly and effectively. Schools adopted

relevant technologies, prepared learning and staff resources, set systems and

infrastructure, established new teaching protocols, and adjusted their

curricula. However, the transition was smooth for some schools but rough for

others, particularly those from developing countries with limited infrastructure

(Pham & Nguyen, 2020; Simbulan , 2020).

Inevitably, schools and other learning spaces were forced to migrate to

full online learning as the world continues the battle to control the vicious

spread of virus. Online learning refers to a learning environment that uses the

Internet and other technological devices and tools for synchronous and

asynchronous instructional delivery and management of academic programs

(Usher & Barak, 2020; Huang, 2019).

Academic Achievement

Academic achievement or (academic) performance is the extent to

which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their short or long term

educational goals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/academic_achievement). This

performance can be measured by many tools such CGPA, skills etc. There

are many empirical studies carried out to examine the factors affecting senior
high school student” performance. A research carried out by Ali et al (2013)

supported the above sentence by stating student’ academic gain and learning

performance is affected by numerous factor including gender ,age ,teaching

faculty, student schooling, father/guardian social, economic status, residential

area of student, medium of instruction of school, tuition trend, daily study

hour and accommodation as hostelries or day scholar. It is believed that

learning style have significant relationship with the academic performance

( Rienties et al., 2012;Desmedt & Vackle, 2003). A study by Wenglinsky

(2001) stated by many quantitative studies which focused specially on

teaching conformed to a similar pattern finding little relationship between

teacher inputs and student” achievement. Therefore, it can be observed that

teaching style have a direct impact on student’s performance because

teachers are most individual that student believes because whatever input

they got from their teacher, they will practice it. Canto- Herrera, & Salazar

Carballo (2010) indicated that there is a significant relationship between belief

about constructivist teaching and each five categories of teaching style of

teachers of mathematician were found, and relationship between teaching

style “delegator” and student academic achievement was found.

English language and Communication is also another important factor

that has impact on the students’ performance. A study by Mosha (2014)

revealed that student were highly motivated to learn English for future

expectations such as local and international communication, academic

advancement and employment prospect.

Blended Learning

Blended learning and research issues blended learning (BL), or the

integration of face-to-face and online instruction (Graham 2013), is widely

adopted across higher education with some scholars referring to it as the

“new traditional model” (ross and gage 2006, p. 167) or the “”new normal” in

course delivery (Norberg et al. 2011, p. 207). However, tracking the accurate

extent of its growth has been challenging because of definitional ambiguity

(Oliver and Trigwell 2005), combined with institutions’ inability to track an

innovative practice, that in many instances has emerged organically. One

early nationwide study sponsored by the Sloan Consortium (now the Online

Learning Consortium) found that 65.2% of participating institutions of higher

education (IHEs) offered blended (also termed hybrid) courses (Allen and

Seaman 2003). A 2008 study, commissioned by the U.S. Department of

education to explore distance education to explore distance education in the

U.S., defined BL as “a combination of online and in-class instruction with

reduced in-class seat time for students” (Lewis and Parsad 2008, p. 1,

emphasis added). Using this definition, the study found that 35% of higer

education institutions offered blended courses, and that 12% of the 12.2

million documented distance education enrollments were in blended courses.
