Unit7/G8 4. Adding and subtracting fractions
Section4
To remember :
One way to add or subtract fractions is when the denominators are the same .
Proper fraction : when the numerator is smaller than the denominator.
Improper fraction : is when the numerator is bigger than the denominator , and it
can be written as mixed number which contains a whole number part and a
fractional number part .

Section4
4.2 adding/ subtracting mixed numbers
When you add mixed numbers, follow these steps.
1. Add the whole-number parts.
2. Add the fractional parts and cancel the answer to its simplest form. If this
answer is an improper fraction, write it as a mixed number.
3. Add the 2 parts together to get the answer.
When you subtract mixed numbers, follow these steps.
1. Change both mixed numbers into improper fractions.
2. Subtract the improper fractions and cancel this answer to its simplest form.
3. If the answer is an improper fraction, change it back to a mixed number.
