CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND TO THE INTERSHIP TRAINING

1.0 INTRODUCTION,

An internship is a program that offer students a period of practical experience in the

industry relating to their field of study. This experience is valuable to student as a means of

allowing them to experience how their studies are applied in the “real world”, and as a

work experience that be highly attractive to potential employers on a candidate’s CV.

1.1 OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

 It help student to apply what is being learned in the class and connecting theory to

practice.

 It expands the professional skill to intern and gain awareness of the professional

expectation in today work environment.

 It helps the intern to gain clarity in their academic and career as well as indentify

personal value and developmental need.

 It helps the student to develop intermediate to advanced knowledge and skill in the

provision of individual and group therapy.

 Internship will aid internees in adjusting from university life to full time employment.

 Interns will develop beginning skill in provision of supervision.

1.2 SCOPE OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The scope of internship program is wider than the unit that act has chosen to conduct

as internship. My internship was one month program I got a chance to listen the case at

the office of gender and children desk affair and how to deal the client and to get the

solution of the case.

1.3 DURATION OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

This internship program started on Wednesday , 1stJune 2016 ended on Thursday 30thJune

2016. This made the internship program to be a one month task.

1.4 ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Tanzania Police Force is a Government department established under the constitution of

united Republic of Tanzania 1977 under Article 147-148(CURT) under chapter nine and to

use the role and regulation of Police General Order (PGO) after the long term to

establishment of the department of Woman and Children Desk Affair under the Inspector

General of Police is SAID MWEMA is forced by the Tanzania Police Force Female

Network so that this department is establishment in 28/4/2010 and than after the one year

has reform this department has to came for any Police station in Unguja and Pemba.

Finally , the Children and Gender Affair Desk works with various organizations such as

one stop center , hospitals , courts and so forth in order overcome the actions of gender

humiliation.

The vision of the organization

To be a professional vehicle towards delivering effective and sustainable public service function.

The mission of the organization

To establish and strengthen cooperation amongst women police officers and community at large and

ultimately improve rendering reliable public service.

 What the organization does

i. To operate within the existing legal framework for the protection of all at risk

children

ii. Ensuring that all children related complaints made to the police are attended to

satisfactorily.

iii. Conducting preliminary investigation of children cases reported to Zanzibar Police

stations

iv. Provide full support to police forces and other agencies in safeguarding children and

tackling child abuse practices

 The gender and children desk affair clientele

The gender and children desk affair provides better services to their client and

provides better care to ward client, with the following clients:-

i. Youth

ii. Woman

iii. Elderly

iv. Children

v. Vulnerable

vi. Disable person

CHAPTER TWO

MANAGEMENT OF THE INTERSHIP TRAINING

2.0 INTRODUCTION

The institute of continuing education (ICE) has been established to serve as center for

extinction service , advocacy , human and civil rights services , part time tailor made

education and entrepreneurial department.

ICE mission is to enhance and disseminate skills of laws , economic , public administration ,

accounting , financing and marketing in allied and applied field by conducting diploma causes

and certificates causes , seminars and workshop. The person head it is Dr . Masoud Rashid

Mohamed and he works very hard in order to achieved the following objectives :-

i. To expand the attachment area for admission of student so as to increase the annual

student intake at the Zanzibar university.

ii. To bring services near to the people.

iii. To provide rate opportunities to potential mature applicant who would other wise

miss universal knowledge by joining as mature entrants. More over the institute of

continuing education allow their student to perform their internship in any

organization the student request. On my side I done my internship at madema.

2.1 ROLE OF THE ICE

i. To provide practical skills that done through sending internees for training.

ii. To provide theoretical skills.

iii. To conducting action oriented research in order to determine and document academic

professional practical needs for continuing education .

iv. To provide revenue so as to increase the financial sustainability of the universally.

v. To design , conduct and evaluate demand driven short cause , workshop seminars and

conference.

2.2 REPORTING AND INDUCTION AT THE ORGANIZATION

It was Wednesday ,1/6/2016 at 7:30 am was fast day in my field , we talk to program

officer of Tanzania Police Force Department of children and gender affair desk her name is

FAT-HIYA A. OTHMAN . We introduced our self and welcomed us very well . She took us

to the administration and civil several department we saw a lot of staff including Mr.

Kassim Fadhil Abdalla , Mr. Hashir Mbarouk . Mr Kassim Fadhil introduced us to others

staff and he welcomed to us again. After a short time he spoke with us each and every

thing about the client.

2.3 THE DEPARTMENT I WAS ASSIGNED

I was assigned at gender and children desk madema.

 Duties of the department

The gender and children desk affair has the following duties;

a. Guiding and Counseling

b. Referral

c. Legal advice

d. Dealing with family conflict

e. To give education to the people about abuse matters.

The head of the department is called Mr. Kassim Fadhil Inspector. He is very hard working ,

charming , intelligent , and very cooperative with clients. He help me to understand the

activities that he done in this department. At this department

 Duties and responsibilities I was assigned

I perform different duties and responsibilities to clients like:-

 To give the client call letter

 To advice and counseling the client

 Naming of officers that worked

i. WP Fat-hiya Abubakar service officer

ii. PC Hashir Mbaruok service officer

 My relationship with other officers.

i. During my internship , there was good relationship between me and other officers

because:-

ii. They helped me gain work experience,

iii. They gave me good corporation in different activities .

iv. They helped me to improve personal attitudes , abilities , and interest in relation in my

career.

v. They help me improve interpersonal skill such as confidence , maturity , and decision

making.

vi. They taught me behavior of workers at the work place.

2.4 ROLE OF WORKPLACE SUPERVISOR

Work place supervisor are officers working for organization that Zanzibar university offered

their study they are one under whose supervision the internees are place , supervisor has

many roles such of them are as follow:-

i. To understand the daily challenges this can help him to be effective and foster

respect for the efforts of the supervisor of the company.

ii. To maintains discipline in to work place.

iii. To ensure that we attending to field work place and ask us some questions about our

work which we practice.

iv. To give us the marks for our performance.

2.5 ROLES OF THE UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR

i. To ensure that we are doing our field at the organization that we request.

ii. To ask some questions about our field.

iii. To mark my internship.

iv. To prepare the format of field and attachment.

v. To sign our reports and give us the marks.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the information which was analyzed from the data acquired from different

sources. The findings of field attachment based on really situation found during the field work

through observation and ideas from some staffs.

3.1 ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

During my internship at the gender and children desk affair I learned that the gender and

children desk are well organized , cooperative and provide good services to the clients. The staff

members are hardworking , intelligent and they interact well with client while they performs their

duties and responsibilities. I get the knowledge of understand a processing of counseling , legal

advice as well as to solve the family conflict.

 Skills gained

In my internship at gender and children desk I gain some knowledge and skill, I gain skill are as

follow:-

i. Computer skills I learn and practice

ii. Communication skills I learn the ability to communicate effectively with supervisors,

staff and clients.

iii. Self reliance skill I learn strengths and self awareness that I can work independently.

iv. Work ethics I learn the way to behave at work and the way staff use posture ,

language to answer customer question.

 Friends and their relevancy to work.

During my internship at gender and children desk , I got many friends who helped me and

work together to perform duties and responsibilities at the work I got a Mr . Kassim officer

who give knowledge and all detail about organization duties and responsibility at this

organization , he is very kind and hardworking. He takes a lot f effort and time to direct me

the activities in client services , I thanks him for his good effort.

3.3 Personal contributions to the organization

During my practical work at gender and children desk my presence happen t add more effort

in serving customers. Because was very hardworking , reading to learn new things and work at

any circumstance . I believe that one month f my internship the gender and children desk

appreciate my presence.

3.4 PROBLEM DURING THE INTERNSHIP

 The organization

i. The building is very small now because number of clients increase day to day.

ii. Lack of funds t support field work students.

iii. Lack of modern equipment for preserving records(data base)

 The workers

i. Lack of enough staff , hence large work load is falling to one staff

ii. Many responsibilities which lead them to work overtime.

 My self

On my side in the beginning , i was very scared and very shy to the staff , that make

difficult to understand the things I was instructed t d but day by day . I overcome my fear and

become confident at work and this help to understand very well activities and build me with

experience about organization. It was very hard to deals with but after a few days I able t

handle them and give some explanation abut their enterquestion.

CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 CONCLUSION

My internship at children desk was successful due to my interaction with to officers. I gain

a lot of things under short period of time I have performed different tasks and I got a lot

knowledge , experience and skills that will help me to my future life development.

4.1 ASSESSMENT OF INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE IN THE ORGANIZATION AND

FUTURE PROSPERITY

Although the organization faces a lot of challenges but it has good organizing and planning

for long and short term of period , also have well committed officers who are ready to work

on any situation in order to make their goals archieves , they have to be prepared for many

competitions from other organizations. Also to increase more force on contributing their

services to the societies.

4.2 WHERE THE INTERNSHIP WAS CARRIED OUT

The internship was carried out at gender and children desk madema

The internship was managed , scheduled and organized by institute of continuing education

and children desk.

4.4 COMMENT ON THE FINDINGS

During my internship program at children desk madema , I got the knowledge of theory I learned

from the class and practice it. In one month of my internship exercise among the things are:-

i. In steps to be followed when there is child abuse case occurred , during the case of child

abuse in the class I have read that after the child be abused the family have to make report

to the then he provide them with letter that the family will take it to police that need

investigation from the police.

ii. Making referral , there is any case that been reported to social welfare officer and she deal

with it and to make the solution due to any matter to make referral for that case so that it

can be given solution of the problem this was what I read during lectures and also it’s what

I have seen during my internship at children desk.

iii. Privacy for the conversation with clients, when you need to talk with the client you must

have the place which have privacy for you to listen to her or him , when you will sit on a

privacy area the client will be free to tell you her or his problem because she or he is sure

that her information wont be spread out and when you insist f confidentiality due to what

she want , it’s what I was seen an my internship and it’s the thing that almost all cause

content insist of during lectures.

4.5 RECOMMENDATION OF THE IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS

i. Increase salary for workers due to hardness of their works.

ii. To find enough area which will fit for them and their works.

4.6 PREDICTED TRENDS FOR IMPROVING MY INSTITUTE IN MANAGING

INTERNSHIP

i. The supervisor who comes from institute must be of the same field which the student

is.

ii. The institute should make sure that the students they know their supervisor before

going to field.

iii. The internship program should at list be done early so that student can get enough

time for them to prepare the report.

4.7 CONCLUSION

Mostly the internship done by college students and university as well , this can even be

applicable to high schools students or post graduate adult. Generally the internship work as an

experiences from students and organizations. Some are finding permanent , paid companies.

Thus , employers also benefits , as experienced trainees need little or no training when they

begin full- time regular employment. They can use field to determine if they can go on with the

same career and create good network of connection. In addition my internship in gender and

children desk affair done work successful , due to increase of new knowledge and skills from

officers I worked with , also gaining experience that can help me on future.
