Ukrainian folk music has a long tradition, with over 200,000 folk songs dating back 600 years that tell stories of love and farewell. One of the most famous Christmas songs, "Carol of the Bells", was based on the Ukrainian folk song "Shchedryk". Modern Ukrainian music spans many genres from folk to jazz. Ukraine has been very successful in the Eurovision song contest, winning several times in the last decade and receiving a record number of audience votes in 2022. During the current war, new songs have emerged that reflect the feelings and spirit of the Ukrainian people, while artists also perform abroad to draw attention to the conflict.

Ukrainians love singing — there are

around 200,000 Ukrainian folk songs!

Clearly, they are really old, some

dating back to 600 years ago, and

have many variations.


The vast majority of Ukrainian folk

songs are either about love or about

saying goodbye.

It's widely known that one of the

world's most famous Christmas

songs - The Carol of the Bells – was

based on the Ukrainian song

Shchedryk, written in 1916 by

composer Mykola Leontovich, which

was in turn based on the melody and


lyrics of a pre-Christian folk song.

Music during the war

There are many new songs or parodies of old

songs that are politically connected to the events of

the day. The music reflects the feelings of the

people during these dark times and at the same

time help people to maintain spirit.


Also, at the same time a lot of Ukrainian artists and

music bands started to give concerts abroad, in

that way they are trying to take attention to war in

Ukraine .
