Re: Proposal for “The BORNEO JAM" – A Rock Festival in Miri in

July 2022

INTRODUCTION

Miri has been host to a number of music festivals previously such

as:

The Borneo Jazz Festival (2006 - 2018)

The Asean Music Festival (2013 - 2014)
The Miri Country Music Festival (2015 - 2018)
Rocktoberfest (2017)

The Asean Music Festival was discontinued after two years .

We are now left with the Borneo Jazz & the MCMF for Miri. These
two festivals cater to niche markets namely jazz enthusiasts and
country music lovers which are limited.

The Borneo Jazz has experienced dwindling numbers for the last
couple of years and now has to contend with the Kuching
Waterfront Jazz Festival which is now into it's 3rd year.

The MCMF has competition in the Seniawan Heritage Town Festival

near Kuching. It has been a success and will be the main Country
music festival in future.
Roctoberfest was held in 2017 and was very well received. No one
knows whether there will be another edition but it was a step in
the right direction as rock music has a much wider appeal in
Sarawak and in the region. Pre-Covid, the Rock music scene
(mainstream and underground) in Borneo has been thriving and
and was very active with small gigs held every month in the main
towns in Sarawak & Sabah & Kalimantan. Bruneians were also very
active in participating in all these events in East Malaysia &
beyond. I am very familiar with the music scene locally and in the
region and I have a good network with the music fraternity within
Borneo.

The music industry was one of the hardest hit by the onslaught of
the Covid 19 pandemic and everyone involved was badly effected.

It is therefore crucial that with the gradual opening of borders, a

strategy should be implemented to bring back life to the music
scene in Sarawak and the Borneo region.

STRATEGY

International Events are not going to be revived any time soon and
may take a few years to be brought back.

We therefore would like to change the focus and concentrate on

talent within our own region of Borneo. There is a big pool of
talented musicians and singers from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei &
Kalimantan Indonesia waiting to be seen & heard but no regional
platform in Borneo in which to showcase their talents. This will also
enable us to give our regional music talents an opportunity to be
heard. We are also creating a unique regional music scene within
Borneo.
It is therefore proposed under the current situation to organize a
medium sized music festival which will adhere to current SOPs &
more manageable to organize. Target numbers will be in the region
of 350 pax which is approximately half the capacity of proposed
venue.

We are therefore planning for a "Borneo Jam Rock Fest" to be held

next year in July 2022 .

This Festival will feature various rock genres such as but not limited
to Indie rock, Alternative rock, Grunge, Heavy Metal, Ska, Punk
rock, Pop rock, Reggae, Rock & Roll, Classic Rock with a sprinkling
of other music genres like Hip Hop etc. The aim is to appeal to a
wider audience of rock fans so that there is something for
everybody.

VENUE

Coco Cabana Miri indoor for the main event.

COLLABORATORS

Borneo Jam will organize the event and we will collaborate with
local government bodies such as Sarawak Tourism, Miri City
Municipal Council, Pusat Belia and associations such as MMAAA
(Miri Music Arts Activists Association) plus others.

SPONSORSHIP

In order to make this event a reality, we are looking for and would
welcome any kind of sponsorship from Government Ministries,
private companies and corporations, private individuals as well as
any entity who would like to be a part of this endeavour.

Sponsorship can be in the form of :

a) Cash sponsorship which is payment of a certain sum of

money(any amount how small is significant and most
welcome)

b) In-kind sponsorship which is in the form of services or

products based on an exchange of retail cash value e.g free hotel
accommodation, free airline tickets, free meals etc.

c) Purchase of a quantified number of tickets for the event.

d) Any other form of sponsorship

All sponsors whether big or small will be acknowledged during the
event and also be featured in our press releases, social media
advertisements, flyers, tickets, banners etc.

VISION

Our vision is start this event on a modest scale and to do it an

annual basis to ensure continuity and potentially grow it into a
large scale regional or even international event in the likes of the
Borneo Jazz, Miri Music Country Music Festival and Rainforest
Music Festival.

We hope that such an event will also make Miri and Sarawak the
hotspot Rock Music in Borneo.

We are only able to make this happen with support from everyone
and we look forward to a positive response from you.
