Automobile L 2

The document provides an overview of automobile engineering. It begins with definitions of automobile engineering and an automobile. It then discusses the classification of automobiles based on load, number of wheels, fuel used, and body structure. The basic components of an automobile are described as the engine, frame and chassis, transmission system, body, and controlling systems. Finally, the document outlines a plan of study for automobile engineering and provides a basic layout of an automobile including the engine, universal joint, gear box, drive shaft, rear axle, and wheels.

Definition of Automobile Engineering

• Definition:
 Automobile engineering is a branch of mechanical engineering which deals with various
types of automobiles, mechanism of its power & transmission systems, guiding &
controlling system, frame, chassis and body.
 It also deals with the various types of automobiles, their and its applications.
• Automobile:
 It is a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine and it is used for transportation of
passengers and goods on the ground.
 Examples : Car, jeep, bus, truck, scooter, motorcycle etc.
Classification of Automobile

• Automobiles or vehicles can be classified as follows:

On Basis of Load
o Heavy transport vehicle (HTV) or heavy motor vehicle (HMV), e.g. trucks, buses,
etc.
o Light transport vehicle (LTV), e.g. pickup, station wagon, etc.
o Light motor vehicle (LMV), e.g. cars, jeeps, etc.
On Basis of Number of Wheels
o Two wheeler vehicle: Scooter, motorcycle etc.
o Three wheeler vehicle: Auto rickshaw, three wheel scooter etc.
o Four wheeler vehicle: Car, jeep, trucks, buses, etc.
o Six wheeler vehicle: Trucks with two gear axles each having four wheels.
o Eighteen wheeler truck.
Classification of Automobile (Continue)

 On Basis of Fuel Used

o Petrol vehicle, e.g. motorcycle, scooter, cars, etc.
o Diesel vehicle, e.g. trucks, buses, etc.
o Electric vehicle which use battery to drive.
o Steam vehicle, e.g. an engine which uses steam engine. These engines are now obsolete.
o Gas vehicle, e.g. LPG and CNG vehicles, where LPG is liquefied petroleum gas and CNG is
compressed natural gas.
 On Basis of Body Structure or Shape
o Sedan Station wagon
o Convertible passenger car
o Jeep
o Van
o Special purpose vehicle: Ambulance, milk van etc.
Basic Components of Automobile

• Automobile can be considered to consist of five basic components :

o Engine or Power Plant : It is source of power.
o Frame and Chassis : It supports the engine, wheels, body, braking system, steering, etc.
o Transmission system: which transmits power from the engine to the car wheels. It
consists of clutch, transmission, shaft, axles and differential.
o Body: which is fitted on chassis.
o Automobile controlling system: Steering, brakes etc.
o Accessories: for safety and comfort including light, air conditioner, heater, stereo and
wiper etc.
• Note:
o To study the automobile engineering, at first we need to know the some basic of operating
and construction I.C engine as well as some basic terms of the automobile.
o So we need have a plan of study.
Plan of Study of Automobile Engineering

 Automotive Engines  Electrical and electronic system

o Construction, basic operation and o Battery
classification o Starting system
o Engine fuel system o Charging system
o Lubricating system o Lights, other electrical accessories.
o Cooling system  Automotive emission control systems.
 Automotive Power Train  Accessories for safety and comfort.
 Automotive Chassis  Automotive performance.
o Suspension system
o Steering system
o Brakes
