PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD:
- B e fo r e t h e S p a n i s h a r r i ve d i n t h e
Philippines the ancient peoples were
engaging in naval warfare, trade, piracy
travel and communication using Balangay.
A flotilla of Balangay was discovered in
the late 1970’s in Butuan City, Agusan Del
Norte.

Philippines Ships, such us the Karakao
or Korkoa, were of excellent quality and
some of them were used by the Spaniards
in expeditions against rebellious tribes and
Dutch British Forces, equip with one
Lantaka in the front and one at the back.

THE SPANISH COLONIAL ERA
- General Emilio Aguinaldo included in the
provision of Biak-na-Bato Constitution –
a. authorizing the privateers to engage
in foreign enemy vessel.

The 1st ship was Commanded by Admiral
George Dewey is a small pinnace from
the Reina Cristina of Admiral Patricio
Montojo which was named Magdalo.

The Philippine Revolutionary Navy was
initially composed of Eight (8) Spanish
Steam Launches ca p tured fro m the
Spaniards. The ships were refitted with 9-
centimeters gun.
Later – Leon Apacible, Manuel Lopez and
Gliceria de Villavicencio donated five (5)
vessels with greater tonnage.

Compania de Filipinas (Navy Flagship
Filipinas) – is a Steam Launches purchased
from China is a 900-ton inter-island
tobacco steamer was added to re-inforce
the Fleet.

The Philippines had to rely on OSP with
Headquarters located at Muelle Del Codo,
Port Area, Manila. The OSP conducted hit-
and-run attacks, but was over power by
the Japanese Forces.

1945 – after the Liberation of the
Philippines, the OSP was reactivated and
led by Major Jose Andrada, reorganized
and rebuild from the core of surviving OSP
Veterans and new recruits.

was renamed Philippine Naval Patrol, with
