• Typhoon is characterized by heavy rains accompanied by strong circulating
winds that can cause flooding
• Typhoon need warm ocean water (26.50C), die out when reach on land,
generally move in a Northwest direction- large scale winds that push the
tropical cyclones in that direction.
• Warm water- supplies the water vapor that a tropical cyclone needs to keep it
going
• Oceans is the better source of water vapors.
• Characterized by heavy rains accompanied by strong circulating winds
• Develops in the north-western part of the Pacific
Ocean between 180° and 100°E.
• In the Philippines, tropical cyclones (typhoons) are called bagyo.
• Typhoon- commonly called in northwestern part of the PACIFIC Ocean .
• * Hurricane- equivalent term in northeastern part of Pacific Ocean.
Typhoons are tracked using a track chart to determine the position, intensity and
predicted direction of the movement of the typhoon.
Average of 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)
each year.
PAGASA or the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration issues Public Storm Warning Signals when an area is about to hit by a
tropical cyclone in the Philippines only.
Precautionary measures have to be undertaken to prevent the loss of lives and
properties before, during and after a typhoon.
Reason why Mindanao is not commonly hit by tropical cyclone unless the ff: happens:
Tropical cyclone starts at a latitude closer to the equator.
Tropical cyclone moves directly to the west, instead to the northwest.
G. Finding practical ELABORATE ( 10 minutes)
applications of concepts Typhoon is a storm system characterized by counterclockwise rotating air mass
and skills in daily living
around central part called eye that has a low pressure.
How does a typhoon develop?
The formation of typhoons start of as tropical thunderstorm.
The strong winds pull in moisture from the oceans. The formation of typhoon the
thunderstorms convert the moisture into heat. The heat causes more air to flow to the
centre of the storm causing evaporation.
Why is Philippines prone to typhoons?
Our country is very prone to typhoon due to its topographical location wherein it lies in
the most prone waters on Earth making it susceptible to typhoons.
What is the difference between a typhoon and hurricane?
