Eclectic Counseling
During 1940s to 50s, most theraphist used specific therapeutic modality and in 1970s, theraphists began
to be drawn in using a variety of therapeutic methods. According to Sondra LaVerne. LH of The Everest
Clinic, “I myself describe that I used an eclectic therapeutic approach draws on a variety of therapeutic
modalities and utilizes the most effective modality for that individuals’ specific needs. It is also known as
the multi-modality therapy approach. The advantages of working with an eclectic therapeutic approach,
it allows me to draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches and then choose and utilize what would
be most effective for the individual for their specific situation or circumstances and I am not locked into
just one therapeutic approach. I really want to support, encourage the client’s voice because that’s
what’s important and it’s important that listen. It’s not about me fixing things for the client, it is much
more about me really listening and understanding where the client is coming from and how we can best
then work collaboratively to help them achieve their goals. Sondra LaVerne, LH, gives a brief overview

May use either Directive or Non- directive approach depending on the situation. Couselor can be
active or passive in couseling.

During the first session….
The client is crying.
The counselor let her cry until she is ready to share her concern.
The client shared her concern and the counselor do nothing at first but to listen and understands the
situation.
The counselor responded passively. (counselor : please don’t invalidate your feelings. You are
entitled to your own emotions and allowed to feel hurt. I am here to lend an ear to listen to all your
worries)
The client recognizes the counselor’s support. But the client was not able to finish the session and
came back after couple of days to continue the session.
