Social media
Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share
content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. Many people define social media as apps on their
smartphone or tablet.
This interaction can take many forms, but some common types include:

 Sharing links to interesting content produced by third parties

 Public updates to a profile, including information on current activities and even location
data
 Sharing photos, videos and posts
 Commenting on the photos, posts, updates, videos and links shared by others
 Like all kinds of posts
 Save any kind of post, link or video

What is it useful for?

The ability to share photos, opinions, events, etc. in real-time has transformed the way we live
and, also, the way we do business. Retailers who use social media as an integral part of their
marketing strategy.
People began to use social media to help them with their daily lives. ... Almost everyone uses
social media which makes it easier to advertise products, events and programs. It can also
help inform and prevent the medical issues.
Social media can also have bad consequences like sometimes it can give you depression and
anxiety, like there are so many people that you don’t know you can have cyberbullying, fear of
missing out, I t also has unrealistic expectations, negative body images, if you use them too
much it can give you unhealthy sleep patterns and the most common It gives you general
addiction.
Next are some of the most popular social media like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and
Pinterest.

Twitter
2
Twitter is an online news and social networking site where people communicate in short
messages called tweets. Tweeting is posting short messages for anyone who follows you on
Twitter, with the hope that your messages are useful and interesting to someone in your
audience. Another description of Twitter and tweeting might be microblogging.

Some people use Twitter to discover interesting people and companies online, opting to
follow their tweets.

Why Twitter Is So Popular

In addition to its relative novelty, Twitter's big appeal is how scan-friendly it is: You can track
hundreds of interesting Twitter users and read their content with a glance. This is ideal for our
modern attention-deficit world.

Twitter employs a purposeful message size restriction to keep things scan-friendly: every
microblog tweet entry is limited to 280 characters or less. This size cap promotes the focused
and clever use of language, which makes tweets easy to scan, and challenging to write. This
size restriction made Twitter a popular social tool.

How Twitter Works

Twitter is easy to use as either broadcaster or receiver. You join with a free account and
Twitter name. Then you send broadcasts (tweets) daily, hourly, or as frequently as you like.
Go to the What's Happening box, type 280 or fewer characters, and click Tweet. People who
follow you, and potentially others who don't, will see your tweet.

Encourage people you know to follow you and receive your tweets in their Twitter feeds. Let
your friends know you are on Twitter to slowly build up a following. When people follow you,
Twitter etiquette calls for you to follow them back.

Why People Tweet

People send tweets for all sorts of reasons: vanity, attention, shameless self-promotion of
their web pages, or simple boredom. The great majority of tweeters microblog recreationally.
It's a chance to shout out to the world and revel in how many people read their tweets.

However, a growing number of Twitter users send out useful content, and that's the real value
of Twitter. It provides a stream of quick updates from friends, family, scholars, news
journalists, and experts. It empowers people to become amateur journalists of life, describing
and sharing something that they found interesting about their day.

A lot of drivel is on Twitter, but at the same time, there is a base of useful news and
knowledgeable content. You'll need to decide for yourself which content is worth following
there.

3
Instagram

Instagram is a social networking service built around sharing photos and videos. It launched
in October 2010 on iOS first, and became available on Android in April 2012. Facebook
purchased the service in April 2012 and has owned it since.

Instagram allows users to edit and upload photos and short videos through a mobile app.
Users can add a caption to each of their posts and use hashtags and location-based geotags
to index these posts and make them searchable by other users within the app. Each post by a
user appears on their followers' Instagram feeds and can also be viewed by the public when
tagged using hashtags or geotags. Users also have the option of making their profile private
so that only their followers can view their posts.

Like most social media apps, Instagram allows you to follow users that you’re interested in.
This creates a feed on the homepage showing recent posts from everyone you follow. You
can Like posts and comment on them.

In addition to posting normal photos and videos, which stay on your page permanently,
Instagram also supports Stories. If you’ve used Snapchat, you’ll be familiar with these.
Stories allow you to post one or more photos and video clips in a series. Anyone can view
these for 24 hours, after which they expire.

Aside from this, Instagram also supports direct messaging so you can chat with friends in
private. You can also explore profiles to see what else you might have interest in.

Instagram is all about visual sharing, so everybody's main intention is to share and find only
the best photos and videos. Every user profile has a “Followers” and “Following” count, which
represents how many people they follow and how many other users are following them.

Every user profile has a button you can tap to follow them. If a user has their profile set to
private, they will need to approve your request first.

Instagram is not only a tool for individuals, but also for businesses. The photo-sharing app
offers companies the opportunity to start a free business account to promote their brand and
products. Companies with business accounts have access to free engagement and
impression metrics. According to Instagram's website, more than 1 million advertisers
worldwide use Instagram to share their stories and drive business results. Additionally, 60%
of people say they discover new products through the app.

Instagram provides a wide range of digital filters that can be applied to users' photos,
including ones that add a vintage or faded look. Other editing features include Lux, an effect
that lightens shadows, darkens highlights and increases contrast, and photo-tuning tools
allow users to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, structure, straightness and
tint. A manual tilt shift and vignette effect can also be added to photos.

4
Facebook

Facebook is a social networking website where users can post comments, share photographs
and post links to news or other interesting content on the web, chat live, and watch short-form
video. You can even order food on Facebook if that's what you want to do. Shared content
can be made publicly accessible, or it can be shared only among a select group of friends or
family, or with a single person.

How It Began

Facebook began in February of 2004 as a school-based social network at Harvard University.

It was created by Mark Zuckerberg along with Edward Saverin, both students at the college. It
wasn't until 2006 that Facebook opened to anyone 13 years or older and took off, rapidly
overtaking Myspace as the most popular social network in the world.

Facebook's success can be attributed to its ability to appeal to both people and businesses
and its ability to interact with sites around the web by providing a single login that works
across multiple sites.

Attractions of Facebook

Facebook is user-friendly and open to everyone. Even the least technical-minded people can
sign up and begin posting on Facebook. Although it started out as a way to keep in touch or
reconnect with long-lost friends, it rapidly became the darling of businesses that were able to
closely target an audience and deliver ads directly to the people most likely to want their
products or services.

Facebook makes it simple to share photos, text messages, videos, status posts and feelings
on Facebook. The site is entertaining and a regular daily stop for many users.

Unlike some social network sites, Facebook does not allow adult content. When users
transgress and are reported, they are banned from the site.

Facebook provides a customizable set of privacy controls, so users can protect their
information from getting to third-party individuals.

Facebook includes public features such as:

 Marketplace - allows members to post, read and respond to classified ads.

 Groups - allows members who have common interests to find each other and interact.
 Events - allows members to publicize an event, invite guests and track who plans to
attend.
 Pages - allows members to create and promote a public page built around a specific topic.

Pinterest

Pinterest is social media network that allows users to share images associated with project,
goods, and services, and to visually discover new interests by browsing images others have
posted.
Is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more.

With billions of Pins on Pinterest, you'll always find ideas to spark inspiration. When you
discover Pins you love, save them to boards to keep your ideas organized and easy to find.

You can share images you find online, or you can directly upload images onto Pinterest.
Using the Pin It button, you can share directly in your browser from any web page. You can
also share your pins on Twitter and Facebook.
You can think of Pinterest like a web-based pinboard or bulletin board — but with greater
organizational functionality. You can also think of it as a bookmarking tool.
People typically pin or save images they found on the web (or on Pinterest itself) to different
boards (used to categorize their image collections). Many of the images saved on Pinterest
are clickable, and open up in a new tab to the original web page where they were found,
The Pins you save live on your boards. Name your boards and arrange them on your profile
however you want. Invite other people on Pinterest to collaborate on Group boards to find
even more ideas.
Under each Pinterest account, you can create and curate multiple boards. This is an
interesting solution to the problem of having one social media account, but various interests.
For example, Pinterest is a very popular tool for recipes. People can browse through images
of delicious looking food, click on an image that looks good and be taken straight to the recipe
instructions when they click on it. They can also save it to their own recipe board so they can
access it later.
Pinterest is also a social network. Users interact with each other through liking, commenting,
re-saving each other’s stuff and private messaging each other.
Small businesses can capitalize on the Pinterest surge to market their products and grow
their consumer base. Pinterest, a highly visual medium, gives businesses a chance to engage
consumers with compelling images and colorful infographics that promote deals and new
products. Pinning pictures of employees could also help customers identify with the people
who work at the company, putting a face to a name. Small business owners can also help
facilitate conversations about their brands online by adding "share" buttons to their websites.
These digital icons allow site visitors to easily click and share a piece of content through a
specific Pinterest board.

6
Conclusion

In conclusion, all social media are useful for different things, they have pros and negatives,
but I think having social media is really important because with them you can discover so
many things and maybe is somehow useful.
But you need to be careful what you do with them because it cannot benefit you.
