Skill Level Skill Needed

Intermediate Crochet

Introduction
Hello! Here I’ll show you how to crochet and make a Sunflower, inspired by the award win-
ning Soraya variety, this short petal, lush wonder is a true beauty and quite the explosion of
happiness!

The Sunflowers are a popular Wedding Flower (3rd Anniversary), and symbolize happiness,
friendship and loyalty. They are a perfect gift for someone special, and will make any lonely
corner bright as the sun.

This document includes patterns, instructions and photo guides to make 3 shapes of Sun-
flower, including bracts and head.

Materials
Front
- Cotton thread size #40 (in yellow and brown) & size #20 (in green).
- Steel Crochet Hooks in Sizes 0.6mm & 1.0mm.
- Floral tape, Stringing Wire in gauge 0.33/0.38.
- Florist Stub Stem (16” wire coated with green paper)
- All purpose clear adhesive, Hot glue.

Pattern notes
In this e-book I first show a pattern diagram, and then
the instructions in American Standard Terms (You
can see conversion table for British terms at the end
of the e-book). After that you’ll find photo guides for
how to make the branch.

I’ve created a page in my Blog where I updated a list

of recommended tested threads - see here.

This flower is quite small, I tried to make the photos

as clear as I could, I’m sorry if some of them didn’t
turn out clear enough!

* If you have problem finding the material needed, don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll do
my best to help.

* I apologize for including copyright notices on diagrams - I have recently found too many cases
of my patterns being shared, hopefully this will help. Thank you for understanding!

Sunflower Flower
This document includes patterns and instructions for Sunflowers in 3 shapes, 2
open flower and a semi-closed flower.

Each flower is made of ~35-40 petals (in 5 different shapes/sizes), ~26-28 bracts
(making 2 elements), base cover (2 sizes) & a flower head.

Bracts Semi Closed

Flower

Flower
Head

This document will first go through the different petals and their instructions, in-
cluding coloring (optional) of the petals. Next, you’ll find the bract elements pat-
terns and instructions, followed by the base covers, the head and finally - flower
assembly.

Finished Size: ~4.5-5.5” / 12-14cm for the fully open blossom.

It is recommended to iron and starch the petals and the bracts element before as-
sembly.

Sunflower Petals
5 different petal patterns are included in this document.

Each flower shape uses a different number and set of each petal:
- Fully Open Flower: 17 of Petal #1, 17 of Petal #2.
- Open Flower: 12 of Petal #1, 16 of Petal #2, 6 of Petal #3.
- Semi Closed Flower: 20 of Petal #4, 14 of Petal #5.

Petal #1 Petal #2 Petal #3 Petal #4 Petal #5

The petals are crocheted with thread size #40, and a stringing wire (gauges
0.35/0.38, length of ~15”/40cm) is used in all petals.

Once petals are crocheted, it is recommended to iron and starch them. It is also
recommended to shape the petals, this gives the flower a more natural look.

While in the open flowers the shaping is minor but no-

ticeable, in the semi-closed flower, the shaping is major
and important. See photo to the right, where petals to the
left have been shaped for the open flowers, and the ones
to the right to the semi-closed.

After petals have been iron and shaped, you can also add some orange-ish color
to the petals, in the base-mid section, this will give the sunflower a more natural
look. This is optional.

Sunflower Bracts
The Sunflower bracts are the green sepal like elements at the bottom of the sun-
flower. Each flower has 26-27 bracts, separated into 2 elements, one element with
larger bracts than the other (left element below has the larger bracts). We’ll attach
both elements, one on top of the other to the base of the Sunflower.

The bracts are crocheted with a larger thread than the petals, size #20 and hook
size 1.0mm in green color.

A bract element is made in 2 stages:

Stage #1: Crocheting the base ring, the ring is made of chains (not a magic ring).
All the petals are going to be worked in the ring.

Stage #2: Crocheting bracts, the bracts are crocheted one by one, in a row by row
motion.

Please follow the photo guide before you try to crochet (photo guide is after the
bracts instructions).

Large Bract Element - Instructions

The large bract element is made of 13-14 bracts -
is bract is crocheted separately. To make the ele-
ment, we first crochet a ring, which will be the
core of the element, and then crochet the bracts,
one by one.

The bracts are made in rows (zig-zag), and in-

clude a non-standard motion borrowed from Tu-
nisian crochet. One row, we crochet the stitches,
but not complete them so we keep adding loops

on the hook - and in the next row, we release
loops from the hook heading backwards.

Stage #1: Crocheting the Ring

Crochet 74 chains, and join with sl-st to beg ch.

Stage #2: Crocheting the Bracts

Preparing Bract for Assembly

The final touch for the bract element
before assembly, it to glue the bracts to
each other so every other bract is over-
lapping its adjacent bracts, so you get
a repeating positioning of one bract on
above and one below.

We’ll do this by applying a bit of glue to

the edges of all odd bracts, and press-
ing the even bracts on top of them (see
photo guide).
Step 1 - Apply a bit of glue to the edge of one bract

Step 2 - Apply glue to the edge a bract 2 bracts away Step 3 - And press the bract between them so its

Sunflower Head
The sunflower is made if many smaller tubular shaped elements called disc flow-
ers (or, florets). We’ll make this flowers from strips of thread.

Normally the inner part of the head is dark color (brown to black), and as your
head outwards, it becomes more or less yellow. We’ll achieve this by creating the
middle from dark strips of thread (left photo), and the outer area from yellow
strips (right photo), which we’ll later add color to.

The next pages will include photo

guide that will show you how to
make this strips, prepare them and
bring them together to a full head.
Optionally, you could color the
heads, if you want it to be darker.

With the photo guide you’ll be able to make heads in different sizes and different
ratios. All you’ll have to do is make the strips
longer or shorter to make the heads bigger or
smaller. Photo to the left shows three different
heads I made. The smaller head will be used
for the semi-closed Sunflower. The more open
the Sunflower is, the bigger the head.
In the photo above :
- The left head required about 16” of dark strips, and 24” of yellow strips.
- The middle: 12” of dark strip and 24” of yellow,
- The Left: 18” of dark strip, and 8” of yellow strip.

Flower Assembly - Semi Closed (#6)

The technique to assemble the semi close blossom is exactly the same as the open
one, only difference is that you’ll use different petals (in different shapes), differ-
ent bract elements and different base cover.

For the semi closed blossom, use ~20 of petal #4 and ~14 of petal #5. Add them in
2 layers, where the inner layer is made of all petal #5 + 2-4 petal #4, and the outer
layer is made of Petal #4.

In the inner layer, use the more closed shapes of petal #4 (shape B & C in the pho-
to above), while in the outer layer use the open ones (shapes C, D).

Use the Small base cover in the semi closed flower.

Step 1 - Petal shapes for semi-closed blossom. Use Step 2 - Add the petals to the head in the same fash-
A, B & C for inner layer and C + D for outer. B, C & ion as you did with the open blossom, mix between
D are made from petal #4, A is made from petal #5 A, B & C shapes.
