Civil Engg: Sand Bulking Experiment

This document outlines an experiment to determine the bulking of sand by measuring changes in volume with the addition of water. It defines bulking factor as the percentage increase in volume of dry sand when water is added. The procedure involves adding incremental amounts of water (2% by weight) to a known volume of dry sand and measuring the volume after each addition until the original volume is reached when saturated. Observations and results of volume measurements at each step would be recorded in a table to calculate bulking factor and plot a graph of bulking versus moisture content.

 Experiment: BULKING OF SAND.

 Object: To determine the bulking of sand i.e. the amount of increase in apparent volume
of dry sand with the addition of a known percentage by weight of water to it.

 Theory: Dry sand has a characteristic i.e volume goes on increasing with the addition of
water up to a certain limit. The volume of sand then goes on decreasing when further
water is added to it till it comes to original volume when fully saturated with water.
The increase in volume over original volume when dry expressed in percentage is known
as bulking factor.
v 1−v 2
Bulking factor = x 100
v1
Where, v1= Volume of sand under test.
v 2= Volume of the same sand when saturated ( i.e. equal to volume when dry).
 Apparatus:

1. Trowel.
2. Balance.
3. Measuring cylinder.
4. Pan of mixing.
5. Rammer.

 Procedure:
1. A known volume of oven dried sand is taken. It is weighed and poured into a
measuring cylinder.

2. 2% of water by weight of sand is added with the dry sand, mixed properly and poured
back to the measuring cylinder.
3. Increase in volume is noted.

4. The operation is repeated each time with the addition of 2% water over the earlier
one till the volume of sand comes back to the original volume.
5. Graph for bulking against moisture content is plotted.
