Reading Comprehension: True or False

Mark each statement as T (true) or F (false) according to the information in the reading passage.

Use the following to answer questions 1-4:

Read this passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

According to Lei Wang, in the article entitled “‘Bookworm’ turns mountain conqueror” by Jaime
FlorCruz, she has always made her own decisions. That kind of independent attitude is evident in
her decision to become the first Chinese woman to have conquered seven mountain summits on
every continent. Although she is only 39 years old, she has accomplishments that many people
only dream of achieving.

As a young person, Lei Wang did not seem to destined to be a world adventurer. She was a
“bookworm,” as her mother said. She did well academically, and after earning an undergraduate
degree at Tsinghua University, she studied for a Master’s degree in computer science at the
University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Wang put her technical knowledge to work first with a financial firm in New York and later with
Internet companies in Seattle. While studying for a Master’s in Business Administration, she was
exposed to mountain climbing. Florcruz writes that “(Wang) joined a mountain climbing trip to
Mt. Cotopaxi in Ecuador as part of a ‘group-building’ exercise.” That trip ignited a passion for
mountain climbing. Soon after the trip, Wang began working out at the gym to build her
strength. She also read books and watched movies about mountaineering. She was determined to
excel at her newfound sport.

Of course, most serious mountain climbers want to face the ultimate challenge: Mt. Everest. And
Wang was no exception. She told FlorCruz, “In 2004, I did some research in the library and
figured that Everest is a mountain that ordinary people can climb, with some training. Soon, I
decided I wanted to climb the (other) summits as the learning paths to scaling Everest.” Although
she wasn’t sure she could really make it, in May of 2010, she accomplished her dream of
climbing Mt. Everest.

Not only has Lei Wang climbed seven of the world’s toughest summits, she has also skied on the
North and South poles. Wang’s advice for mountain climbing can be applied to almost any
challenge. As she told FlorCruz, “Even though you cannot see how you will get there, you know
if you keep on going you will finally get there.”
