Radio Conversation Overview
Originator – the member starting the conversation
Receiver – Who the originator is speaking to/would like to speak to
1) Initiate Contact (also known as the handshake)
[Receiver’s call sign] this is [Originators call sign]
Zero Alpha this is Bravo 1-0
2) Receiver is ready/able to speak
[Receiver’s call sign], [Originators call sign] send
Zero Alpha, Bravo 1-0 send
3) Format for remaining conversation
a. Call sign speaking identifies themselves first
b. Message is given
c. When finished speaking, the term ‘over’ is used
[Originators call sign] [Receiver’s call sign] [Message] over
Bravo 1-0 Zero Alpha, be advised Bravo Squad has secured checkpoint Chicken, over
4) Receiver replies, following the above format
Zero Alpha Bravo 1-0, I need Bravo to hold checkpoint until notified otherwise, over
5) Repeat steps three (3) and four (4) until all information is discussed
6) Ending conversation
a. Usual radio etiquette dictates the person originating the conversation finishes it, however,
as with all operational matters, Chain of Command takes precedence
[Originators call sign] [Receiver’s call sign] [Message] out
Bravo 1-0 Zero Alpha, we will hold checkpoint until notified otherwise, out
Joining a Frequency
If a member moves frequencies (to communicate with another team), they’re required to transmit an
introductory message on the new frequency. The member would complete a handshake and then state;
[callsign] is now on frequency [frequency number]
An example of Charlie 1-1 (Charlie 1 Team Lead, shown in red) joining Bravo’s squad frequency;
Bravo 1-0, this is Charlie 1-1
Bravo 1-0, send Charlie 1-1
Charlie 1-1, Bravo 1-0 Charlie, 1-1 has joined frequency 35 over
Bravo 1-0 copies, Charlie 1-1 has joined 35, 5 by 5, out
