SCIENCE 7 PURE SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURES
Lesson 3: Types of Solution
Solution is a mixture of two or more substances that is identical throughout. It is composed of
solute and solvent. A solute is the substance being dissolved while solvent is the dissolving
medium, it dissolves solute. In a brine solution or salt in water solution, salt is the solute while
water is the solvent.

Solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature and pressure
to produce a solution. Dissolving substances in hot water is faster than in cold water. Gases need
higher pressure to mix with other solvent.

Types of Solution
1. Saturated solution contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved in a given
amount of solvent. In this type of solution, no more solute can be dissolved in a
definite amount of solvent at a given temperature
Example: We put 3 spoonful of powdered milk to water to make a glass of milk.
2. Unsaturated solution contains less amount of solute dissolved at a given
temperature. In this type of solution, addition of solute is possible until the solution
reaches the point of saturation.

Example: When your mother make a cup of instant coffee, usually there is less
instant coffee powder mixed in a cup of hot water.
3. Supersaturated solution contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution
does. The addition of more solute creates crystal formation in the solution, an
indication that the solvent can no longer dissolve the solute.
Example: Candy rock has more sugar than its dissolving medium, water or other
ingredients.
