Benjamin Franklin

(A) Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one
of ten children born to Josiah Franklin, a soap maker, and his wife Abiah Folger. Josiah
wanted Benjamin to enter the clergy but could not afford to send him for schooling.
Consequently, when Benjamin was 12, he apprenticed for his brother James who was a
printer. Benjamin worked extremely hard at formatting the text and composing publications.
When Benjamin was 15, his brother printed the first editorial newspaper in Boston. Unlike
other publications throughout Boston that simply reprinted events, James' newspaper, called
The New England Courant, printed articles and editorial columns. Benjamin was very
interested in his brother's newspaper and desperately wanted to help him write it.

(B) Unfortunately, he knew that James would not allow a fifteen year old boy to write
articles. Benjamin thought of a plan. He would write under an anonymous pen-name and slip
the articles under the door at night. He chose the name Silence Dogood. Articles written by
Silence Dogood became very popular. People throughout Boston wanted to know who she
was. She spoke out about issues abroad and the poor treatment of women. Finally, after 16
letters, Benjamin confessed to James that he was Silence Dogood. James was very angry and
jealous of the attention Benjamin received.

(C) Nevertheless, the paper continued. James' editorials became increasingly critical of the
Puritan leadership within Boston, especially for their support of the smallpox inoculation
(which the Franklins believed made people sicker). James was incarcerated for his criticism
and Benjamin was left in charge of publication. When James was released from jail, he beat
Benjamin, despite the fact that he had kept the publication afloat. In 1723, Benjamin ran
away and eventually ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he met Deborah Read.

(D) While in Philadelphia, Benjamin lived with her family and soon found work as an
apprentice printer. Franklin was an excellent printer and was sent by the governor of
Pennsylvania to London to purchase font types and printing supplies. In exchange for his
service, the governor promised to help Benjamin start his own printing business. In the
meantime, Benjamin and Deborah had grown very close, and she had begun to suggest they
should get married. Benjamin felt unprepared, and left for England. Unfortunately, the
governor lied, and Benjamin was forced to work in London for several months. Deborah
married another man while he was gone.

(E) Upon his return to Philadelphia, Benjamin borrowed money and started his own printing
business. He worked extremely hard and soon received government printing contracts.
Benjamin's business became very successful and he became well known throughout
Philadelphia. In 1730, he married his sweetheart Deborah Read, whose husband had left her.
In 1729, Franklin bought the Pennsylvania Gazette and turned it into the most successful
newspaper in the colonies. His newspaper contained the very first political cartoons.
Benjamin continued to design and author creative and popular publications. In 1733, he
printed his Poor Richard's Almanac. While most almanacs of the time contained weather
reports and other predictions, Poor Richard's Almanac contained lively writing, interesting
facts, and creative sayings - many which are still used today. "A penny saved is a penny
4
სასწავლო ცენტრი KEA • Khatia's English Academy
earned" came from Franklin's almanac.

(F) While Benjamin was busy with his publications, he also found time for charity and
public work. Franklin launched various campaigns designed to improve the quality of life for
Philadelphia's residents. He helped in lighting and paving Philadelphia's streets, cleaning up
its environment, and in starting America's first circulation library. He also started the
American Philosophical Society as well as the Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia Union
Fire Company and The Philadelphia Contribution for Insurance Against Loss by Fire
Company.

Task 4: Read the text and the questions which follow. For each question
mark the correct answer (A, B, C or D).
(8 points)
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky, to Thomas
and Nancy Lincoln in their one room log cabin on their farm known as Sinking Spring.
Although Thomas lacked formal education, he was an excellent farmer and carpenter, and
often times served as a member of the jury. Thomas and Nancy joined a small Baptist church
in the area that had broken away from the larger church over the issue of slavery.
When Abe was two, the family moved to nearby Knob Creek Farm, where Abe's first
memories of his childhood were formed. Because of difficulties his father had with the title
to the farm, Thomas Lincoln moved his family to Pigeon Creek, Indiana, in 1816, where the
seven year-old Abraham helped him build a log cabin in the woods. Two years later, Nancy
died of “milk sickness.” In 1819, however, Thomas married Sarah Bush Johnston, whom
Abraham would call “mother.” Sarah was a kind and warm woman who brought her three
children, Matilda, Elizabeth, and John to the Lincoln homestead to live with Abraham and
his sister.
From an early age, Sarah recognized Abraham’s quick wit and intellect and encouraged him
to read. Abraham became an avid reader, gobbling up any book he could get his hands on
from neighbours, clergymen, and traveling teachers. Abraham attended school on an
inconsistent basis. At times, traveling teachers may have taught at a nearby rudimentary
schoolhouse, and at other times Abraham walked several miles to the nearest school. Lincoln
himself admitted that the total amount of schooling he received in his childhood was no more
than twelve months; nevertheless, he became an excellent reader, learned to write, measure,
and make division and multiplication calculations. Abraham took his studies very seriously.
Without paper in the house to practice his writing and math, he often did arithmetic on the
back of a wooden spoon using charcoal as a makeshift pencil.
Abe’s growing desire to attend school conflicted with his father’s demands on him, which
often made him appear lazy to his neighbours. His father often rented him out to perform
manual labor tasks such as shucking corn, hoeing, gathering, and plowing. During the
early 1800’s, Abe’s father was entitled to all of the money earned as a result of his son’s
labor. Abe's considerable strength was evident with his unusual skill and power with an axe.
Abe was said to be able to chop more wood and split more rails than anyone around. Far
larger and stronger than the other boys in the region, Abe could outrun and outwrestle all of
5
სასწავლო ცენტრი KEA • Khatia's English Academy
them. Unlike most boys of his time, however, Abe avoided hunting because he took no
pleasure in killing animals.
Although Abe gained a reputation as a prankster, and for his storytelling abilities, he also
gained a reputation for honesty. When he was nineteen years old, he was hired to co-steer a
flatboat down the Mississippi River to unload produce to be sold at the plantations in the
South and to return with the money earned. For these services, Abe was paid eight dollars a
month. More importantly, these forays into the South opened Abe’s eyes to the world
beyond the Indiana frontier and likely begun to shape his views toward the horrors of slavery
as he witnessed the auctions and treatment of slaves firsthand.

William Henry Gates
(A) William Henry Gates (III) was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. Gates
began to show an interest in computer programming at the age of 13 at the Lakeside School.
He pursued his passion through college. Striking out on his own with his friend and business
partner Paul Allen, Gates found himself at the right place at the right time. Through
technological innovation, keen business strategy, and aggressive competitive tactics he built
the world's largest software business, Microsoft. In the process he became one of the richest
men in the world.

(B) Bill Gates grew up in an upper middle-class family with two sisters: Kristianne, who is
older, and Libby, who is younger. Their father, William H. Gates, Sr., was a promising, if
somewhat shy, law student when he met his future wife, Mary Maxwell. She was an athletic,
outgoing student at the University of Washington, actively involved in student affairs and
leadership. The Gates family atmosphere was warm and close, and all three children were
encouraged to be competitive and strive for excellence. Bill showed early signs of
competitiveness when he coordinated family athletic games at their summer house on Puget
Sound. He also relished in playing board games and excelled in Monopoly.

(C) Bill was a voracious reader as a child, spending many hours pouring over reference
books such as the encyclopedia. Around the age of 11 or 12, Bill's parents began to have
concerns about his behavior. He was doing well in school, but he seemed bored and
withdrawn at times. His parents worried he might become a loner. Though they were strong
believers in public education, when Bill turned 13 they enrolled him in Seattle's Lakeside
School, an exclusive preparatory school. He blossomed in nearly all his subjects, excelling in
math and science, but also doing very well in drama and English.

(D) While at Lakeside School, a Seattle computer company offered to provide computer time
for the students. The Mother's Club used proceeds from the school's rummage sale to
purchase a teletype terminal for students to use. Bill Gates became entranced with what a
computer could do and spent much of his free time working on the terminal. He wrote a tic-
tac-toe program in BASIC computer language that allowed users to play against the
computer.

(E) It was at Lakeside School where Bill met Paul Allen, who was two years his senior. The
two became fast friends, bonding on their common enthusiasm over computers, even though
they were very different. Allen was more reserved and shy. Bill was feisty and at times
combative. They both spent much of their free time together working on programs.
Occasionally, they disagreed and would clash over who was right or who should run the
computer lab. On one occasion, their argument escalated to the point where Allen banned
Gates from the computer lab. On another occasion, Gates and Allen had their school
computer privileges revoked for taking advantage of software glitches to obtain free
computer time from the company that provided the computers. After their probation, they
were allowed back in the computer lab when they offered to debug the program. During this
time, Gates developed a payroll program for the computer company the boys hacked into, and
a scheduling program for the school.

14
სასწავლო ცენტრი KEA • Khatia's English Academy
(F) Bill Gates graduated from Lakeside in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the college
SAT test, a feat of intellectual achievement that for several years he boasted about when
introducing himself to new people. He enrolled at Harvard University in the fall, originally
thinking of a career in law. But his freshman year saw him spend more of his time in the
computer lab than in class. Gates did not really have a study regimen. Instead, he could get by
on a few hours of sleep, cram for a test, and pass with a reasonable grade.

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, at her grandparents’ house.
Soon after her birth, Amelia’s parents separated. Nevertheless, Amelia’s sister, Muriel, was
born two years later. Amelia’s early years were spent with her wealthy grandparents. The two
girls lived with their grandparents until Amelia was ten.
In 1920, her parents had reunited in California. Amelia decided to leave Columbia and join
them. Amelia’s love for aviation was born when her father took her to an aerial show where
she got to ride in an open-cockpit flight over Los Angeles.
Amelia started taking flight lessons with Anita Snook. She caught on quickly and soon
became an excellent pilot. In July of 1920, Amelia purchased her first plane. It was a bright
yellow Kinner airplane. She named it “The Canary”. In October of 1922, just a few years
after taking up flying, she began attempting to break records. She first broke the altitude
record of 14,000 feet.
In 1925, Amelia took a position at Denison House in Boston as a social worker. While there,
Amelia got a call that would change her life forever. On April 27, 1926, Captain Hilton
Railey called her to take part in a flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She would only be a
passenger. Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon flew the plane, but Amelia became the first
women to make the trip across the Atlantic. Amelia did not think she deserved the attention
she received but was more determined than ever to make the trip herself. While in London
and back in the United States, Amelia toured the country, giving lectures and speeches.
On May 20, 1932, five years after Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic, Amelia began
her journey to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Despite eventually veering off course, she broke
several records on the historic flight. Not only did she become the first woman to fly the
Atlantic solo and the only person to do it twice, she also broke the record for the longest
flight by a woman and broke the record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean in the shortest time.

15

During this time, Amelia had made many important friends. She had agreed to marry
millionaire publisher George Putnam and had even taken First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on a
flight.
In 1935, Amelia started planning for an around-the-world flight. On her first attempt she
crashed during takeoff. Amelia would have to wait until her plane was repaired to try again.
On June 1, 1937, Amelia Earhart and copilot Fred Noonan again set off to fly around the
world. They had flown 22,000 miles and had 7,000 left to go. However, trouble lurked for
Amelia and Fred. Shortly after Amelia left New Guinea on July 2, she sent several distress
calls. While her distress calls were received, Amelia could not hear the return messages
because she could not find the correct frequency on her radio. Amelia and Fred were off
course and lost over the vast Pacific Ocean. They did not have enough gas to reach their
target—Howland Island. Amelia and Fred would never be seen or heard from again.
President Roosevelt sent nine naval ships and 66 aircraft to search the area. On July 18, the
search was called off.
To this day there are many theories concerning the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. Some
say her plane crashed in the ocean and she drowned. Others say her plane crashed but she
was taken prisoner by the Japanese, who occupied many of the Pacific Islands. Still others
believe Amelia made an anonymous return to the States and lived as a housewife in New
Jersey.
The world will probably never know what happened to Amelia Earhart. Nevertheless, she
remains a hero and inspiration to millions across the world today.
